An MLB Collaborative TL: Piece of Cake: The Cubs win Game 6 in '03

With the first pick…
ESPN COVERAGE OF THE 1st OVERALL PICK OF THE 2004 NFL DRAFT

Berman:Alright you heard the commissioner the 2004 NFL Draft is now open for business! Interesting what can happen in the next 10 minutes with the Chargers pick possibly someone can trade up still for this pick teams like the Steelers,Patriots and even the Giants despite their trade to get Mark Burnell new Giants head coach Bob Stoops who stays that they still happily take a QB in this draft. Rumors have gone around that if the Chargers don’t take Eli here that Fittzgerald or Sean Taylor or even someone like Roy Williams could go number 1

Mel Kiper:The safe choice here if it’s not Manning is too trade down or get someone like Sean Taylor or Larry Fitzgerald
*Camera zooms on Sean Taylor in the waiting room*

2003 Big East Defensive Player of the Year and unanimous All American , 212 and 6 ft 2 has all the tangibles to be a elite NFL safety. Or Larry Fitzgerald who is the best receiving prospect I have seen in quite some time
*The camera zooms in on Larry Fitzgerald in the waiting room*
Heisman Trophy runner up to Eli Manning in 2003 and was the Big East Offensive Player of the year in 2003 was also a unanimous All American. 218 and 6 ft 3 he is what every NFL GM wants it a receiver so don’t be surprised if it’s either both of them.

Berman:Alright thanks Kip but I want to interrupt you as there is a trade the New England Patriots somehow have traded up with the Chargers and are now the team with the first overall pick. We don’t know what they have up but all we know is that the New England Patriots have the number 1 pick and are on the clock right now.

Morterson:If I can chime here let me just say that this has to be for Manning and wow they must of given a TON to San Diego to end up here and with the loss of Tom Brady to Miami they are trading up here for a franchise quarterback there is no doubt. I think in a few minutes from now we will hear the commissioner officially announce Eli Manning as a New England Patriot in this building.

Berman:Well hold on to that as Commissioner Tagliabue is walking up to the podium right up and after months of build up here it is the 1st pick of the draft

Commissioner Tagliabue:The San Diego Chargers have traded the first overall pick to the New England Patriots. *Some cheers are heard but boos are mostly heard* With the first choice in the 2004 NFL Draft the New England Patriots select Eli Manning quarterback Ole Miss.
*The camera zooms inside Jets fans shocked and booing*

Berman:So wow the New England Patriots at the 11th hour trade up and end up with their prized possession! *Eli Manning hugs his family and puts on a Patriots hat walking up to the podium holding a Patriots jersey that says Manning on it with the number 1.

Kiper:Manning just checks all of the signs of a Belicheck like quarterback. Though more so with Drew Bledsoe than Tom Brady. He’s going to a organization that if they can reload a bit they will probably be one of the teams to beat in a few years down the road.

Berman:I believe Sal Palolantoino has now the trade recap between the Chargers and Patriots Sal?

Sal:Yeah Chris it was at the final moment but the New England Patriots traded their 2004 1st overall pick and their 2004 2nd round pick along with their 2005 1st round pick to be able to move up to this spot and in return the Patriots are getting the number 1 pick yes but they are getting a 2005 6th round pick and wide receiver appropriately named David Boston in return so it all adds up in the end hopefully for the Pats as they get their man at the final buzzer.

Two first, seems Eli bluff worked so well for all involved, well next rest of the draft (card: Fitzgerald no matter what... unless another King ransom)

Cardinals on the Clock
April 24, 2004: COVERAGE OF THE NFL DRAFT, ESPN

Berman: “Well, following that shocking deal, the Arizona Cardinals are now on the clock with the second pick, and we’re gonna go to Mel Kiper to see what he has to say on who they’re looking at.”

Kiper: “Well, the Cardinals have needs at a whole host of positions, but it’s pointing towards Pittsburgh star Larry Fitzgerald. They held a meeting with the All-American, and Bill Bidwell said it went well, and I think it would be surprising if they picked someone else.”

Berman: “Thanks Mel, now the Cardinals are taking a while with this pick, but we’ve just got confirmation that the pick is in, so let’s go to the stand where Paul Tagliabue is going to announce the pick.”

Paul Tagliabue: “With the second choice in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals select… Larry Fitzgerald, Wide Receiver, Pitt”

Berman: “And so no real shocker there, Larry Fitzgerald is officially an Arizona Cardinal, and the fans should be very happy out in the desert. Now, a team that has had much anticipation over what they’ll be doing, the New York Giants.”

Western Conference, round 1
Hate to interrupt the NFL draft, but...

2004 NBA Playoffs first round Part 2: Western Conference

(1) Sacramento Kings vs (8) Memphis Grizzlies
G1 (April 17, 2004): Memphis 87 @ Sacramento 113 (SAC leads series 1-0) (Mike Bibby with 53 points)
G2 (April 19, 2004): Memphis 94 @ Sacramento 109 (SAC leads series 2-0)
G3 (April 21, 2004): Sacramento 95 @ Memphis 100 (SAC leads series 2-1)
G4 (April 23, 2004): Sacramento 102 @ Memphis 93 (SAC leads series 3-1)
G5 (April 25, 2004): Memphis 98 @ Sacramento 121 (SAC wins series 4-1) (Paul Gasol with 54 points, Chris Webber with 53 points)
In the first ever playoff series for the Grizzlies, the Kings would give them a rude welcome, winning in five games rather convincingly. Outside of a near Grizzlies choke job in game 3 (they were up 22 at one point in the second half), Sacramento would cruise into round 2.

(4) Dallas Mavericks vs (5) Los Angeles Lakers
G1 (April 17, 2004): LA Lakers 103 @ Dallas 99 (LAL leads series 1-0) (Kobe with the clutch three with 12 seconds left)
G2 (April 19, 2004): LA Lakers 94 @ Dallas 95 (Series tied 1-1) (Dirk hits the game winning layup with 0.8 seconds left)
G3 (April 21, 2004): Dallas 107 @ LA Lakers 110 (LAL leads series 2-1) (Kobe hits the go-ahead free throws with 4 seconds left)
G4 (April 23, 2004): Dallas 102 @ LA Lakers 96 (Series tied 2-2)
G5 (April 25, 2004): LA Lakers 104 @ Dallas 103 (OT) (LAL leads series 3-2) (Once again, it's Kobe stepping up big, hitting the game tying shot with 3.4 seconds left in regulation before Derek Fisher hits the winning shot in overtime with 7 seconds left. Steve Nash's potential game winning shot at the buzzer goes off the rim)
G6 (April 27, 2004): Dallas 114 @ LA Lakers 112 (Series tied 3-3) (Nash redeems himself from Game 5, hitting the winning jumper with 0.5 seconds left)
G7 (April 29, 2004): LA Lakers 99 @ Dallas 104 (DAL wins series 4-3) (Game is known for Michael Finley shoving Karl Malone with the Mavs up 16 in the fourth quarter. LA would go on a 14-3 run to end the game, but it wasn't enough)
In the only first round series that went the full seven games, we got a thriller with the much maligned Mavericks upsetting the championship favorite Lakers as midseason trade acquisition Vince Carter did next to nothing for LA in this series. This could be the last game for Kobe Bryant, Gary Payton, Karl Malone and coach Phil Jackson as Lakers as well, perhaps ending an era.

(3) Minnesota Timberwolves vs (6) Phoenix Suns
G1 (April 18, 2004): Phoenix 88 @ Minnesota 97 (MIN leads series 1-0)
G2 (April 20, 2004): Phoenix 92 @ Minnesota 105 (MIN leads series 2-0)
G3 (April 22, 2004): Minnesota 103 @ Phoenix 94 (MIN leads series 3-0) (Kevin Garnett with 42 points and 13 rebounds)
G4 (April 24, 2004): Minnesota 90 @ Phoenix 96 (MIN leads series 3-1)
G5 (April 26, 2004): Phoenix 107 @ Minnesota 103 (OT) (MIN leads series 3-2) (Tracy McGrady hits the game tying shot with 15 seconds left to force OT)
G6 (April 28, 2004): Minnesota 111 @ Phoenix 98 (MIN wins series 4-2)
In a battle between KG and T-Mac, it would Garnett's T-Wolves who came out on top, nearly letting a 3-0 series lead slip away before winning their first ever playoff series in six.

(2) San Antonio Spurs vs (7) Houston Rockets
G1: Houston 79 @ San Antonio 90 (SA leads series 1-0)
G2: Houston 82 @ San Antonio 86 (SA lead series 2-0)
G3: San Antonio 95 @ Houston 78 (SA leads series 3-0) (Known for Tony Parker's windmill dunk on Yao Ming)
G4: San Antonio 83 @ Houston 81 (SA wins series 4-0) (Tim Duncan hits the series winning tip-in at the buzzer)
The Spurs look just as good as the team that won it all last year, sweeping Yao Ming and an up and coming Rockets team, but Houston made almost every game close.

Second round matchups
(W1) Sacramento Kings vs (W4) Dallas Mavericks
(W2) San Antonio Spurs vs (W3) Minnesota Timberwolves
(E1) Detroit Pistons vs (E4) Toronto Raptors
(E2) New Jersey Nets vs (E6) Boston Celtics

Picks 3 and 4
APRIL 24th 2004 MORE COVERAGE OF THE 2004 NFL DRAFT

Berman:So the G-Men now lead by former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops who led the Sooners to 2 National Championship games and a national title plus 3 Big 12 Conference championships in the last 4 years who by all sources has comfortably settled in at his new job. Any hints on what the Giants could do here?

Kiper:Well they could take someone who was a star on Stoops Oklahoma defensive line in Tommie Harris but even though they had kept open that they could take a quarterback despite with Kerry Collins and now the trade to get Mark Burnell on the roster I feel like they could build behind Burnell or Collins and take someone like Robert Gallery or Texas WR Roy Williams.

Berman:Well the commissioner is going up to the podium and let’s see what the Giants do.

“With the 3rd choice in the 2004 NFL Draft the New York Giants select Robert Gallery offensive tackle Iowa.”
*Camera shows Robert Gallery walking into the stage grabbing his Giants hat then shows Giants fans in the MSG theatre being ok with the pick*

Berman:So the Giants play it safe and get someone a lineman who had been called the best tackle prospect in a NFL Draft since Orlando Pace in 1997!

Kiper:I wouldn’t go that far Boomer but this is someone who at least l would rate higher than any tackles of the past 2 draft classes. The Giants are getting someone who will be reliable and soon to be proven in a year or 2 in the heart of their O Line.
Most likely Burnell will benefit heavily from him and you are looking at a guy who is gonna be in the debate for best offensive tackle in the NFL a few years from now.

*Later on*

Berman:So Oakland is here at number 4 and all eyes should be widen at what Al Davis could do here.

Jackson:Yeah Boom Al Davis as soon through they years that he is not afraid to throw a massive curveball in the draft if there hasn’t been one already. *Laugh*

Morterson:Yeah the thing is you got a aging offensive with a 38 year old Rich Gannon and a 41 year old Jerry Rice and a 37 year old Tim Brown. I can see all 3 of those guys hanging it up after this season. Though while on defense they made 2 major moves getting Champ Bailey and Warren Sapp all those other players on the defensive line are proven depth players at best.

Kiper:Agreed with you guys you got Sean Taylor who would go in this range or some like Tommie Harris from Oklahoma or Will Smith another defensive end that stock soared way up after his monster performance in the blowout upset against Michigan in their final regular season like when he forced a strip sack and made it into a defensive touchdown which was the first score in that game and someone who came up as the 2004 Sugar Bowl MVP after he helped Ohio State repeat as champions after a game where he has 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss.

Maybe they do go quarterback maybe they take someone like Philip Rivers or Ben Roethlisberger who will sit behind Gannon for a year then take over the team which could be the perfect scenario for those 2.

Berman:Well here comes the Raiders pick and let’s see what Al Davis does in this moment.

“With the 4th choice in the 2004 NFL Draft the Oakland Raiders select Sean Taylor Safety from Miami FL”
*The camera shows Sean Taylor in the waiting room waking off and grabbing a Raiders hat*

Boomer:Al Davis makes a massive splash and gets someone who can impact ASAP

Kiper:Yeah Chris this was a Al Davis pick written all over they had Charles Woodson and Champ Bailey and their cornerback they drafted last year in the first round Nnamdi Asomugha and now they get the best defensive back in this draft Sean Taylor and wow Oakland is back to being the most feared team in the AFC West.

This is a guy who very well could have a massive impact as soon as he gets here. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is already being called Defensive Rookie of the Year already!

Morterson:He’s the best defensive player in this draft Kip and he has shown what he did at Miami that he can be able to show what he was doing there and translate it when he plays on Sundays!

Who’s going to H-Town
APRIL 24th 2004 MORE COVERAGE OF THE 2004 NFL DRAFT

Berman: So now the Texans here with the fifth pick, what should they do gentlemen?

Kiper: Well they already have a fine quarterback in David Carr, so Rivers and Rothlisberger are off the board. I think Houston could possibly add a potential target here for Carr on offense. Maybe Kellen Winslow Jr or Roy Williams, who Texans fans would like to see considering he played his college ball at UT.

Berman: Welp, ladies and gentlemen, we have a trade to announce, as the Texans have traded the number five overall pick to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the ninth overall pick and SS Robert Griffith. Gentlemen, your thoughts on this trade?

Kiper: Well, this is a very even trade as Cleveland has been seeking a quarterback and Houston wanted a piece on defense and an experienced one in the part in Griffith. I would be shocked if the Browns do not take either Rivers or Rothlisberger here as Kelly Holcomb just will not get the job done. I think fans in Ohio want the hometown kid in Ben, but Rivers would also make a fine choice.

Berman: Here's the commissioner to tell us who'll be the Cleveland Browns first round pick.

Tagliabue: With the 5th overall selection in the 2004 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns select... Philip Rivers, Quarterback, NC State
*Shows Rivers putting on a Browns hat, then shows a draft party in Cleveland cheering the pick*

Good luck Philip
At the time the Browns weren't the mess they would become five years later but Tim Couch and others did suffered thanks to the birthing pains of the new browns, so Rivers could be vital for the browns ITTL, and otl they wanted him but couldn't reach for him, seems they got him here

Lions looking to trade
Berman: The Detroit Lions are on the clock. We see them on the phone right now. It appears they're listening to offers for the 6th overall pick. Has to be teams trying to move up for Big Ben.

Kiper: It makes more sense to trade than take Roethlisberger themselves. They just invested the third overall pick in Harrington. Roethlisberger has a lot of upside but he's the riskiest of the three picks - mid major coming out early, not a very good Wonderlic score, tendency to force passes into traffic. I'd give up on Harrington for Eli, but otherwise I'd let Mooch develop him.

Mortensen: And it appears we have a trade. The New York Jets have moved up.

Tagliabue: The Detroit Lions have traded the 6th overall pick to the New York Jets. With the 6th pick of the first round, the New York Jets select Ben Roethlisberger, quarterback, Miami of Ohio. The Washington Redskins are on the clock.

Berman: You usually don't see Jets fans this happy at the draft. And what did the Lions get in return?

Mortensen: They got a good haul. 12th overall in this draft, the Jets first rounder in 2005, center Kevin Mawae, and defensive end Sean Ellis. Good trade for Detroit. They still get a very good player at 12, they grab two proven veterans for the trenches, and worst case, if Harrington doesn't improve, they have enough capital to trade up for a quarterback next year. Rodgers and Leinart should both be on the board.

The Jets also covered what missed it up as Pennington's Shoulder is slowly collapsing too. Still, it was a big trade, all three QB was traded for.. that will mean a lot for their teams

AFCE is going to be a bloodbath and the bills with Bledsoe are the weakest link

Two lineman taken
Berman:Washington is on the clock and they just probably aren’t dealing this pick and staying out what should they do?

Kiper:Well they don’t have Bruce Smith or Champ Bailey anymore and they missed out on Sean Taylor but I can see them being best player available on both sides.
You look at Roy Williams from Texas still on the board he probably is the best receiver in this draft not name Larry Fitzgerald or once again someone like Will Smith or Tommie Harris all sorts of possibilities here.

Berman:Well here comes the commissioner and see what happens

“With the 7th choice in the 2004 NFL Draft the Washington Redskins select Tommie Harris defensive tackle Oklahoma”

*Later on*
Berman: The Bears are on the clock and they had some solid free agents signs like Ruben Brown and a new coach in town in Lovie Smith Kiper what about them?

Kiper:Another cause of possibly best player available how about Kellen Winslow II from Miami could be the 2nd Hurricane drafted in the top 10 and watching the tape he definitely has the potential and shows that resemble of his Hall of Fame father. I don’t know if he is the pick here but he is the 2nd best available player right here behind Roy Williams.

Berman:Well the Bears already have their picked made and let’s see what it is

“With the 8th choice in the 2004 Draft the Chicago Bears select Will Smith Defensive End Ohio State”.
*The camera zooms in to a Bears draft party as they are excited about that pick*

Berman:You really seem to love this pick do ya Kip?

Kiper:I really do Boom this is a guy that was a late raiser after 2 monster games against Michigan and Oklahoma in the National Championship game in which he won game MVP honors. Most scouts and GMs actually had him higher than Tommie Harris and that combine he put up that’s really how he put his name up there!

Cubs-Cards meet for first time
April 23-25, 2004: A rivalry, one of the most anticipated this season, returns, as the Cubs and Cardinals lock horns for the first time this year at Wrigley Field. On Friday, Matt Clement and Woody Williams start, and the Cubbies blast Williams, with a Sammy Sosa first inning two-run home run starting the scoring, before Chicago strikes for 6 in the second, knocking the St. Louis starter out of the ballgame. Clement holds the Cards scoreless for six innings, and is taken out in the seventh. St. Louis finally scores in the eighth, but it’s just a solo homer from Reggie Sanders, so it matters little to the final outcome, an 8-1 Cubs win. The second meeting of the series is much more interesting, but begins the same as the first game, as Sammy Sosa dinks a Jeff Suppan fastball off the foul pole for a 1-0 lead for the home club. However, in the fourth, the Cardinals take their first lead off the series, as a So Taguchi single off Barry Zito drives in Mike Matheny and Reggie Sanders to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead. They extend it through a two run homer from Tony Womack, and a run-scoring, ninth inning double from Miguel Tejada isn’t enough to win, and the Redbirds take game 2 of the series, 4-2. Game three will decide the series, and it begins with yet another homer, but this time, it’s Albert Pujols who hits it, and the Cardinals begin the game with a 2-0 advantage. Pujols celebrated the round tripper a little too much for Bartolo Colon’s liking, and he hits the ‘Birds first baseman. In the next inning, Jason Marquis retaliates, plunking Corey Patterson. This starts a brief scuffle between Patterson and Marquis, but nothing really comes of it, as Yadier Molina breaks it up before anything serious happens. Marquis shuts down the Cubs for 8 innings, and Pujols added to the lead with a solo homer in the sixth. However, the ninth inning was a different story, and it began with a Sosa walk. Aramis Ramirez enters the box next, and he hits a bloop single, bringing Todd Walker to the plate. Walker strikes out, and catcher, and quick Cubs fan favorite, Michael Barrett, prepares to hit. He hits a grounder to Tony Womack, who turns to throw to Edgar Renteria, initiating a game ending double play. However, Womack air mails the ball into Left Field, enabling Sosa to score, and putting Ramirez on third, Barrett on second. The potential game-winning run comes to hit, that being Corey Patterson. Patterson takes a strike from Steve Kline, before he sees the pitch he likes, crushing the 0-1 pitch onto Sheffield Avenue, and winning the game for the Cubs. Patterson would go on to say it was the “hardest I’ve ever hit a baseball.”

QB discussion
Berman: Alright let’s go to our guys in the studios in Bristol as they breakdown the major deal of this draft take it away Trey

Wingo:Thanks Chris so at the heat of the moment Eli Manning is a New England Patriot thanks to a massive trade to get to that number 1 spot thoughts gentlemen?

Hodge:Well Trey I think this was the best case scenario for Manning he doesn’t have to worry about being traded right after being drafted as the 1st overall pick *laugh* and I think it went to the right place in New England

Jarowski:Merlin yeah it was clear that Brady and Belicheck were not on the best of terms and that’s really want prevented them going to a another Super Bowl these past 2 seasons and now they have a quarterback I think Bill is gonna good chemistry with Eli in New England and I think I think this is a wide open division but hard to see them not been at least considered at least a few years down the road as a “The Team” in that division

Hodge:Jaws I kinda disagree you look at what Miami is doing now and I don’t think Brady is a “15 minutes of Fame” type of guy and that wide receiver core they have it’s gonna be tough not for them to be favorites but ok yeah New England now has a chance to at least kinda challenge that claim. I know they traded away their 1st and 2nd rounders but New England still has their 2nd round pick they got from Miami in the Brady trade so it’s gonna be interesting if they out Eli there.

Wingo:Interesting guys what about the other QB picks?

Hodge:Big Ben to the Jets? I still kinda like Pennington and I think it’s still premature to kick him to the curve like that

Jaroswki:He can’t stay healthy! No offense but maybe if he had a healthy shoulder he wouldn’t of have that happen to him. However I do think he should get another shot somewhere at least next season probably ironically enough in Detroit who traded that pick to the Jets and I think they need a veteran presence there or maybe even Dallas.

Hodge:Well Jaws at least can you agree with me on Rivers to Cleveland?

Jaroswki:Yes I do I believe that was the right place for him and the right choice for the Browns to trade up there even if it wasn’t for the local guy.

Trey:Alright back to you Chris in New York

Berman:Thanks Trey I believe our own Sal Palolantoino has a update on the Giants Chargers trade Sal?

Sal:Yeah Chris it wasn’t until the Chargers went on the clock with the first pick until the idea of the Patriots jumping all the way up to the 1st pick was in their favor. Both teams had talks about a deal like this the weeks leading up here but there wasn’t anything close to a deal until as soon the draft started.

One Chargers spokesperson told me that San Diego was planning on staying at that spot and taking Larry Fitzgerald with the 1st overall pick until New England came calling and have them a deal they couldn’t refuse. The team said that they had no plans of taking Eli Manning without trading the pick and the player just like we saw with Elway and the Colts 20+ years ago.

Someone close to Manning reported to me that Eli is very happy to be a Patriot and that he can stay to get up to Foxboro as soon as possible. Back to you Chris

Berman:Thanks Sal

Winslow back in SD
Berman:As we hit the 9th pick it looks we have another trade on the board wow and it’s the San Diego Chargers they are back on the board! The Houston Texans traded back down and it’s the team who originally had the number 1 pick who will eventually have a top 10 pick after all.

Kiper:This is very interesting as I do know what this could be.
*A camera zooms in on Kellen Winslow II on the phone in the waiting room*

Morterson:Yeah Kip it’s looking like Kellen Winslow II is gonna end up where his father played his iconic Hall of Fame career in with the Chargers. I know of the character issues he had and that needs to be worked up but if they want to build around Drew Brees which seems to be the case it’s nice to give a should be reliable target like him.

Berman:So 25 years after his father Kellen Winslow Sr was taken in the first round by the San Diego Chargers will be the same for his son Kellen Winslow II

Kiper:Winslow I thought was gonna be off the board by pick 5 to 7 and yeah the character did thrown teams off but I do this is the perfect scenario for him at the end of the top 10 here.
He was unanimous seen as the best tight end by pretty much every one in college football last season but that “I’m a Solider” speech really rubbed some GMs the wrong way and they told me and a few others that they worry about his presence in the locker rooms.

Berman:Well here comes the commissioner and we will have more details of this Texans-Chargers trade soon.

“The Houston Texans have traded the 9th pick to the San Diego Chargers. With the 9th choice in the 2004 NFL Draft the San Diego Chargers select Kellen Winslow II Tight End Miami FL”
