An Interesting POD

While going through wikipedia, I found interesting POD.
In 1689, Bostonians imprisoned the Royal Governor and other sympathizers of King James II on April 18, 1689.

Now, this ended the de facto Dominion of New England. But, what if they hadn't done this, and remained the Dominion of New England? What effects would this have on them?

Another POD could be the British now adding New York and New Jersey to the Dominion. (In fact, It'd be interesting to see New England in possession of Long Island, where they were well accepted.)

Erm... that was a fallout of the Glorious Revolution. In order to keep the Dominion, you need to make the New Englanders loyal Jacobites - something that's going to be a lot harder, and have a hell of a lot more results, than just one big northeastern colony.

Just having Bostonians not arresting Andros would not magically allow the Dominion of New England to survive. In his short tenure (all of five months), Andros managed to alienate pretty much everyone in New England. His arbitrary, Stuart-style authoritarianism went against the norm of salutary neglect. He promoted Anglicanism in New England, which (somewhat understandably) drew the ire of the Puritans. Bostonians basically saw him as a puppet molded after and dancing on the string of James II, so as soon as the colonists learned of the Glorious Revolution they drove Andros out of Boston.

So for the Dominion to survive, you'd have to avoid the Glorious Revolution, which gets out of my expertise into Stuart-era Britain.

Also, FWIW New York and the Jerseys were added to the Dominion in OTL, in 1688.

Hmmm. Can't we just have a more competent Andros, or someone more competent replace him?

Honestly, I can't see it. It doesn't matter how competent Andros is: the colonists will see him regardless as an intruder who is taking away their traditional freedom and self-rule. And from what I've read, Andros was a very competent administrator - he proved that during his tenure in New York and the Jerseys. The problem comes from the fact that he was very much a product of the Stuart method of government, which proved incompatible with the colonies. IMO it is almost impossible for Andros's dominion to survive. The only way I can see it working would be for him to employ loyal troops to occupy Boston and impose rule on the citizens. On the one hand, it will secure his short-term authority. But on the other hand, he will be seen even more as a tyrant in the Jacobite mold. Perhaps the colonies subjugated under the Dominion would unite in rebellion against Andros?
