An independent Szekely Land after the end of WWI

What if the victorious Allies would have created an independent Szekely Land after the end of WWI while giving Romania the rest of Transylvania?

Would an independent Szekely state be viable over the long(er)-run?

Also, such a state would be similar to Lesotho in the sense that both will be completely surrounded by another country.

Probably wouldn't happen, Hungary was considered a Central Power by way of Austria-Hungary and Romania was an Entente Power (we don't use the word Allies, that's WWII). Continuous compact territories seemed to be the preference at the various treaties, Versailles et al. Part of the reason German Austria wasn't allowed to have Sudentenland. Smaller multi-ethnic territories and cities in eastern Europe (or central Europe if you insist on rewriting history because of the negative connotations with the Cold War) had plebecites but rarely was independence really the long term option. I would argue that the situation of Danzig and Trieste are different from the situation of Szekely Land, and it is likely to be more like the situation of the Polish Corridor.

Why exactly are Danzig and Trieste different?

Also, an independent Szekely Land would be territorially compact.

It would be surrounded by Romania, and technically Szekely land is divided in two. Yes, you could say they may leave the smaller part out, sure. But surrounded by Romania, a nation that was on the "winning side"? Prior to US joining shortly after the big "thing" was the huge contribution of Romanian soldiers (who promptly were a let down). Look at the treaties that occurred and how they treated Hungary, universally screwed for the most part. A Hungarian/Romanian territory surrounded by Romania, default win to Romania.

Trieste is different because the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (Yugoslavia) and Italy are both "winning" side powers. A compromise to "keep the peace". And of course you have to keep insulting Italy putting it on par with nations like Yugoslavia so it joins the Axis later in history so it wouldn't be on the Allies side (joke, based on Churchill's quote that "it's only fair they have Italy this time, we had them last time").

I certainly get your logic here that it would be unrealistic; however, I am assuming that it somehow happens anyway.

Also, Yes, the smaller part of the Szekely Land looks like it's so small that it can confidently be given to Romania:

Also, though, could my scenario here be accomplished if Romania joins the war in late 1918 rather than in 1916?

Yes, the Treaty of Trianon could be less harsh towards Hungary. Make POD where Hungarians towards the end are more willing to work WITH Romania as well against the Central Powers.
