An Independent Madeira?

Just wondering if the FLAMA had succeeded and established an independent Madeira, what would have been the difference in world history?

The only way this could be possible would be if mainland Portugal fell to communism and the USA decided to assista FLA and FLAMA in order to secure the archipelagoes to the capitalist bloc.

If this were the case, the newly independent Madeira would be heavily dependent on the Americans, and it would probably be a fiscal paradise of some sort.

An independent Madeira would starve to death. The island can't produce enough to feed itself, and doesn't have the economy to import.

Oh please. How's Madeira any more liable to starve to death in the event of independence than Cape Verde did?

Madeira actually has a very good climate for growing food all year round and exports a lot of things like fresh winter produce to Europe. Yes it has a food import imbalance but if it was independent things would naturally adjust, with tourism and financial services profits paying for imported food.

The local fishing industry would probably expand as well, the fresh fish dishes on Madeira are excellent.

Yes, please, an independent Madeira!
No more taxpayer funded Maritimo and Nacional in the Primeira Divisao!
How did it happen? In 1910 the Monarchists in Funchal bravely and boldly continued to fly the white-blue flag and in some fit of Madeira (the drink) inducted madness the UK recognised the O Verdadeiro Reinado de Portugal, Algarve, Madeira e o Resto do Ultramar.
