Earlier today, I was looking over GeekhisKhan's timeline Viva Balbo!, along with Norvea's timeline Giovinezza, when a thought popped into my head:
Oct 24, 1929 - Umberto II is assassinated by Fernando de Rosa in Brussels.
June 17, 1936 - Vittorio Emanuele III is killed after a grenade is thrown into his car by an anarchist revolutionary.
Oct 25, 1936 - Mussolini and the PNF decide to hold a plebiscite on the future of Italy. One option is to continue the Savoy Monarchy, with Amadeo, Duke of Aosta as the new King; the other option is to abolish the monarchy in favor of a fascist republic.
My question is if such a referendum took place in late 1936, what are the chances that the motion to abolish the monarchy would've succeeded? Also, how would the Fascists have dealt with the Royals if the monarchy was abolished? Would they have sent them into exile like the OTL Italian Republic, or would they have allowed them to stay in Italy?
