Personally I think Montgomery would have been one of the better American generals of the war had he lived but sadly was cut down at Quebec. Here's TL where he lives
September 24 1775- Ethan Allen and John Brown capture Montreal Governor Carleton is among the prisoners
December 31 1775- Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold capture Quebec in a joint attack under command of General Richard Montgomery
May 3 1776- HMS Isis at the head of the first embarkation anchors at Isle aux Coudres lands 29th Regiment
June 2 1776- General John Burgoyne arrives with the Second Embarkation, totaling some 4,000 troops.
June-July 1776- With British naval superiority all along the St. Lawrence General Montgomery was faced with a perilous situation. The British could land anywhere along the river towards his rear and cut his LOC and lines retreat. Gen. Burgoyne was well aware of the uselfulness of the advantage he possessed and quickly began sending troops upriver landing at Pointe aux Trumbles. Montgomery had initially only sent a portion of his command towards Pointe aux Trumbles fearing a feint, but soon realized that British intended to fight the batte in his rear.
July 4 1776- Battle of Pointe aux Trumbles results in decisive British victory resulting in the capture of General Montgomery and 3,000 of his soldiers.
September 1776- Montgomery exchanged for Guy Carleton in New York given command of the American right wing
December 26 1776- General Richard Montgomery crosses the Delaware at Burlington, NJ. and advances on Bordentown where he captures the remnants of Rall's Trenton garrison(roughly 400-500 men).
January 2 1777-The American army before Trenton withdraws without incident towards Princeton
January 3 1777-Battle of Princeton results in complete capture of the British garrison of 1300 men Washington advances to New Brunswick and captures the garrison of around 600 men including the British war chest of 70,000 Pounds Sterling
September 11 1777-Battle of Brandywine, General Montgomery now in command of the Left Wing opens the battle by attacking across Chad's Ford and catching 5,000 hessians guarding the ford in a double envelopment. The Americans are later forced from the field but can claim a tactical victory
October 4 1777- Battle of Germantown, General Montgomery dismisses General Stephenson for appearing drunk on duty and takes personal command of his division. Battle results in a decisive American victory
June 28 1778- Battle of Monmouth with General Charles Lee under court martial for apparently devulging sensitive information during his captivity to the British, General Montgomery is given command of the main attack and promptly drives the British from the field despite a visicous British rearguard action.
Any thoughts??
