An American Asylum?

So, a fairly simple question. Would it be possible for the US government to offer Tsar Nicholas II and his family asylum after he abdicates?

I know Wilson viewed the Russian Revolution favorably so that would be a problem but maybe he can look past that and work out some sort of deal?

it wouldnt be a problem at all...cept fro one thing...how the hell would nicholas and co get out of russia seeing as they were pretty much kept under arrest around the clock til they were offed

I could be wrong here, but wouldn't long-term residency of royalty on US soil pose some legal/constitutional difficulties? Either they'd be resident aliens, perhaps under some sort of diplomatic (?) protection, or they'd have to renounce all titles, claims to the throne, and so on to become US citizens. You sure couldn't have them living here on the public nickel: that would provoke outrage in Congress for starters.

What's a bit more plausible to me is Wilson somehow talking one of the minor / smaller constitutional monarchies into taking the Romanovs under some sort of asylum. I'm thinking perhaps the Netherlands (the Dutch are pretty tolerant) or Denmark as likely landing points. In either case, the nations in question were neutral in the war, and had royalty of their own, so the Romanovs might feel more or less at home.

They could just be permanent residents. Citizenship isn't mandatory or anything.

They would be a pretty special case, especially once the red scare gets underway, but the Romanov royal family was pretty rich anyway. And could presumably get funds from the rest of the Russian emigrate community.
