My scenario,
Andrew Jackson is successfully shot in 1835 by Richard Lawrence, but reveals his chosen successors of Van Buren and Johnson before his death. Van Buren becomes Acting President (he is never sworn in as president like Tyler) and develops gout, as he did in our timeline when he ascended to the presidency. In the upcoming election, Hugh L. White stills becomes nominated by Whigs, believing Jackson's chosen successor Van Buren to be akin to monarchy.

Election of 1836:

Without Jackson to help the campaign in the south, coupled with Van Buren's illness, no candidate wins the necessary 148 electoral votes (Michigan was admitted after 1837, so congress does not count their votes as it would swing the election in Van Buren's favor).

This leads to a contingent election. Richard Mentor Johnson is easily confirmed by the Senate, but Harrison and White together manage to block Van Buren, leading to Richard Mentor Johnson becoming Acting President. Under the added stress of multiple deadlocked conventions, Van Buren succumbs to his gout. With only Harrison and White to be vote for, White curries support from Democrats, being a former Democrat himself, and Hugh Lawson White becomes the 8th president of the United States.

However, I'm unfamiliar with much of the history of this period, and so I have no idea what could happen next, or how history would change. What would happen next?
