An alt Australian Anthem.

So on Sufficient Velocity we were having a discussion abt an alt more militaristic anthem for Australia what could AH.com find on this?

Heres the anthem

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts;
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross,
We'll toil with hearts and hands,
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands,
For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share,
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia fair.

Why not keep it but just have it set to a livelier tune--like the theme from Gilligan's Island? :p

It is a dreadful dirge, chosen only because Gough Whitlam liked it. I would have preferred Song of Australia.

Actually it goes best to the Cold Chisel tune "working class man", Adam Hills does if anyone wants a listen.

Who cares about the text of the national anthem. All you need is a catchy tune that sounds awfully spiffy when it is played by a military band. If it comes to singing, everyone will ditch the anthem and go with 'Walzing Mathilda' instead anyway.

First, the only time I have heard Song of Australia played was at a broadcast of a boxing match in Mexico. The Mexican came in first and their anthem played, then the Australian and the tune changed.

Everyone in the room - my family and friends, all Australian born adults - thought the extra bit, actually Song of Australia was more of the Mexican National Anthem.

Keep in mind that after junking 'God save the Queen' Whitlam didn't select an alternative, they gave a choice of four songs, including God save the Queen and Waltzing Matilda. It stayed that way for years.

The idea of using a song about a homeless drifter who commits suicide rather than be arrested for sheep stealing as a national anthem always struck me as odd. Yes, that is what Waltzing Matilda is about, once you get the 19th Century Bush Slang translated.
