An Age of Peace? – A 1966 Kaiserreich Sequel

(Special thanks to @pattontank12 and @Historyman 14 for greatly contributing towards the ideas over the years that made this TL possible. Also, to both @Danifa94 and @comrade cat, for being such great friends to me.)

Foreword:
Ever since I first stumbled upon the Kaiserreich mod and while writing my Politics and International Relations dissertation back in university, it has ben an alternate history setting that have captured my imagination. With it indirectly leading me to evenly joining this forum, and some of my earliest posts on this site being KR related discussions. While playing the "Darkest Hour" version of the mod, instead of playing the game it was intended to by allow the random number to decide the state of the world, I have always instead acted like an omniscient control freak ASB, carefully dictating and deciding on what paths and what decisions each country will make, in order to craft the KR world in a manner that tell the story that I wanted to be told. But I have always kept the ideas to myself since more or less every KR player have their own headcanon, and I have thought that mine wasn't that unique or worthy of being shared.

With @Historyman 14's "Hetalia: Kaiserreich Edition" thread back in 2017, I started sharing elements of my my headcanon with others on the forum, with the discussion getting taken to private messaging, where @pattontank12 and I further developed the lore and ideas for each nation in the form of their Hetalia personifications, and coming up with stories for them.

After 5 years and over 80 pages worth of messages, I realized that what he had is something truly unique: A setting that is alive and well developed, with lore and stories for literally every single country down to how the Kaiserreich PoD as well as the events after the 1936 start-date have impacted everything from their national politics to their cuisine and culture. With a setting that does not straightly follow one version of the mod or another, but take elements from all of them, from the latest rework in HOI4, to the older, forgotten versions back in the days of DH, not to mention ideas of our own that we have come up with based on the setting does not exist in the mod itself. In other words, a setting that I really wanted to share with everyone else, beyond my private inbox with just 3 other people.

As such, inspired by @Upvoteanthology's "The People's Socialist Atlas", and AP246's "Thousand-Week Reich - A 'realistic' Nazi victory scenario" I have decided to create a graphic TL, telling the story my Kaiserreich headcanon in the form of detailed in-universe maps from the year 1966, 30 years after the start date of a normal Kaiserreich game. All commissioned and drawn for me by the amazing @procrastinating2much.

So, without further ado, welcome to the world of 1966:

The map of the world (1966):

52143234930_cec4d00b87_o.png

The year is 1966, 47 years after the guns fell silent with the Treaty of Versailles/Peace with Honor of 1917 which ended the First Weltkrieg, and 26 years after the start of the Second Weltkrieg in 1940 which once again plunged the world into death and destruction on a scale unseen before in history. Though the grudging and reluctant cooperation between the German-led Riechpakt and the Entente remnants, the Syndicalist Internationale's dreams of a World Revolution lay in tatters, and the National Populist Russian States hunger for conquest and revanchism crushed. As the guns once again felt silent in the year 1945, the exhausted and war-wary people of the world who had seen their lives upended time and again over the past few decades overlooked a seemingly return from the new to the old antebellum order before the First Weltkrieg : A multipolar world of rival geopolitical blocs and web of alliances... But with a twist:

Despite the lost of their influence in the Asia Pacific, not to mention the damages that it has suffered during the war, the German Empire and her allies stands dominant as the foremost economic and military power of the world. While the newly restored Entente powers of Britain and France, once the dominant powers of last century that have just regaining their homelands from the revolutionaries, found themselves now as the scrappy upstarts, determined to reclaim their place under the sun...

Yet beyond the powers of old, new powers have also arisen from the ashes: America, China, the Ottomans, Austria Hungary.... Nations that had once been dismissed as nothing but ramshackle walking corpses, have all seemingly emerged form their long agony. Reinvigorated, reenergized, and seemingly stronger then even, they were all determined to make a place for themselves in the world by leveraging their new found industrial, economic, and military might.

The pessimistic feared that another Weltkrieg might be inevitable, one that will once again engulf the globe in the fires of war, this time with deadlier weapons surpassing those used in the Second Weltkrieg... yet for now, their fears seem to be unfounded. Seemingly tired of sending millions of their sons and fathers to die every generation, combined with the threat of mutual nuclear annihilation, the promised new era of peace and cooperation agreed upon by all parties during the 1949 Congress of Verdun have held. While rivalries, competition, and the occasional covert action or proxy conflicts does still take place from time to time, on the whole, the post WK2 world is one of relative clam and stability, compared to the absolute chaos and earth shaking changes around every corner in the 1920s and 30s.

This is an age of globalization and free trade, replacing the zero-dum mercantilist economic system of old, which many argued was what created the conditions leading to the rise of radicalism in the first place, which directly led to WK2. An age of technological advancement and consumerist plenty, as best exemplified by families gathered around their living room televisions, watching footage of the United States of America putting the first human to ever journey into outer space in the year 1963, putting beyond all doubt that the country that once fell into a Second Civil War back in 1936 have fully recovered from its decline.

... Yet things might not be as stable as the optimistic and the naive might wish to believe. Even beyond the borders of the Indochinese Union, the last remaining syndicalist holdout in the world, in the jungles of South America, the mines of Kataga, the squatter camps in South Africa, the textile mills of Port Said, the sweat tips of Central America, and even the working class tenements and student dormitories of Chicago, London, and Paris, the specter of syndicalism might not be as dead and buried as some might wish to think. In the divided and broken land that was once Russia, radical ranging from Neo-Bolshevik to diehard loyalists of Savinkov's old regime wish to average they utter humiliation of their defeated nation. And in Africa and Southeast Asia, while decolonization have taken place for most of the world, France and Portugal stubbornly held on to their remaining colonial possessions, and even for countries that have formally been decolonized, considering the continued economic and political influence of their formal overlords, many question if they have truly been granted independence at all.

Will the so-called 'Peace of Verdun' be able to hold? Or will storm clouds gathered once more?

Love the look of this world; I'm especially interested in what you do with America. A democratic America that had the Civil War is very unexplored by the fandom and I'm interested to see how the issues facing America in the 60s otl are changed by the 2ACW.

very nice map, but for the ottoman empire it's not itanbul but constantinople, but otherwise interesting i can't wait to see the rest

This is magnificent!
Thank you to you again for having helped me develop the ideas over the years that when from me being a control freak editing the 'ai_chance' files in the DH version of the mod, into becoming an actual setting that is alive and interesting.

@chankljp who won in china fangtian or federalist ? Since the republic has the five color flag is either those two or is it the Zhili-Republic route.
The Fengtian Government led the reunified China, but they did so via the Beijing Unification Conference path, uniting all the various Republican warlords/factions in China under their banner in exchange for political concessions. Hence, it sharing power with the Federalist by having Chen Jiongming serve as the first Prime Minister of the republic, as well as winning over the moderate elements of the Left-KMT under Song Qingling and the Revolutionary Buddhist in Hunan via the introduction of a limited welfare system, land reforms, and woman's rights. With the 'Four Principles of the People' written into the republic's constitution.

That has always been one of the things that disappointed me too. Most TL have post-Second Civil War America either balkanized, or under one of the radical factions. With the idea of a victorious democratic Federal government being an idea that seems to be rarely explored or touched upon... Since I guess that compared to syndie America, a military dictatorship, or whatever madness Pelley does, it just felt... Boring, to most people.

Me, on the other hand, actually like to see a US dealing with the aftermath of the SCW, while staying with their founding democratic principles. Which this TL will absolutely explore.

Trust me, that was something that I have considered editing when coming up with the details of the map. But the mod had never been consistent with exactly what the capital of the Ottoman Empire is names. With Istanbul (Such as the 'Istanbul Pact', or the 'Istanbul-Baghdad Railway'), Constantinople (The 'Constantinople Corps' Gendarmeries), and Kostantiniyye (In most other flavor events) being used seemingly at random interchangeably. In the end, considering that the Ottoman-led 'Istanbul Pact' is an international institution, I assumed that this is the name that the people outside of the Ottoman Federation will use.

Just some notes. Austrian Lvov would be known as Lwow (Polish name) or Lemberg (German name). In independent Ukraine Donetsk would be named Yuzivka, and Krasnodar would be Katerinodar (Ukrainian versions of the Russian Empire names). And Smolensk in Byelorussian would be Smalensk.
Also, Tsaritsyn/Volgograd never was a Don Cossack city. Capital of the independent Don during the Russian Civil War was Novocherkassk.

So, you finally decided to share your detailed Kaiserreich headcanon with the world, beautifully illustrated with an atlas? Kudos to that!

I wish you success, although knowing the quality of your projects, I am sure that An Age of Peace? will be well received.

Who knows, it might even inspire a Kaiserreich Cold War/Great Game mod someday!

Thanks! And for the record, if anyone wants to share, or run their own RP map game using my headcanon setting, feel free to do so. In fact, I will be happy to provide any extra information that you might have of the setting.

Loving this story quickly. I am delighted that the federalist won the 2ACW, now I am interested in their developments.
Thank you. Be rest assured that one of the maps I have planned will be a detailed series of historical maps explaining how the Second American Civil War went.

Alf Landon was POTUS during the war, hence there was never a MacArthur coup or a PSA breakaway rebel state in this TL.

I imagine the wizards don't appreciate the German conquest of England or their occultism, but it sure is an interesting and even terrifying idea

Harry Potter TNO, as in the sense of a 'The bad guys win and its aftermath' story, not Harry Potter taking place in the world of TNO.... With, for example Draco Malfoy being the Albert Speer equivalent in the Death Eater controlled British Ministry of Magic, Umbridge being Bormann, Pansy Parkinson being Goring (With Crabbe and Goyle being her Schörner and Remer), and finally, Bellatrix being the Himmler analog.

This sounds crazy and forced, I know... But I hope that one day we will be able to share the full setting that we have developed with everyone.

Have just updated the name in accordance to your feedback. In case anyone else have other suggestions on cities and locations that should be renamed to make them fit the setting better, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments here on the thread or via PM. Once again, thank you very, very much for your suggestions.

points I’ve noticed so far:

-Entente Win. Now that must of been a highly impressive victory, considering how heavily disadvantaged they are at the start, with their strongest base thousands of miles away across the Atlantic and France in Africa being always potentially upset by Revolution. Interesting that the Germans allowed this state of affairs.

- I assume this went into the calculations of the Congress of Verdun, much like it’s previous incarnation: to establish a system where the big boys can keep peace and crack down on Radicalism. The Brits and Entente are partners in this endeavor

- Two nations fucked over by this seem to be Italy (who cannot be allowed to grow as they both have radicals and have revanchist tendancies) and Russia (No more big bear to attack Europe). Russia is especially fucked. No way they can rise again, not this divided. Surprise they allowed the indochinese to live instead of say siccing the Japanese on them.

-The Ottomans are going to have some very interesting times ahead. Sadly, I expect this means Armenia is totally and uttterly dead as well.

will add more when I have time!

However, for those who might be interested in a preview or glimpse, I invite you to see the posts that @chankljp and I made in the Alternate New Orders: Last Days of X thread.

More things I noticed

-Serbia is also on the list of fucked over countries, makes sense due to bulgarian desire for there Territory and Austrians hating their expansionist, revanchist guts.

-Brits have decided to go more into decolonization, but the French are going full on “NOT ONE STEP BACK!”. Which makes sense given recent history.

- It seems 19th century mores rule more generally. Germany has Empire, the Entente has Empire, and thus the rules of empire rule. Very diffrent geo political rules from today, more…Putin esque. Unfortunately.

-and I see why Japan won’t attack Indochina. They’ve been utterly fucked, losing both China and Korea. China will need time to recover so…yeah I can see it.

Well, without giving too much away, lets just say that it is a combination of the Entente managing to keep on metaphorically rolling double 10s starting from 1936 onwards, combined with their enemies making mistakes that enabled them to exploit their opportunity to their advantage. To start with... The T.E. Lawrence/Lawrence of Britannia counterrevolution as depicted in the DH version of the mod is canon for TTL.

- I assume this went into the calculations of the Congress of Verdun, much like it’s previous incarnation: to establish a system where the big boys can keep peace and crack down on Radicalism. The Brits and Entente are partners in this endeavor
Also the fact that Germany is dealing with a two front war, and way, way overextended. Forcing Berlin to view the Entente as rivals that they can live with, compared to the Internationale and NatPop Russia, in which long-term peaceful coexistence is fundamentally impossible due to ideological reasons. of course, Germany will still be negotiating from a position of relative strength, and hence would have been able to get all sorts of political concessions from their former enemies in exchange for their cooperation. Starting with Nationalist France renouncing their claim to Alsace-Lorraine, among others....

- Two nations fucked over by this seem to be Italy (who cannot be allowed to grow as they both have radicals and have revanchist tendancies) and Russia (No more big bear to attack Europe). Russia is especially fucked. No way they can rise again, not this divided.
With Italy, while they will indeed no be able to reunite again anytime soon, all things considered, they are not that terribly off. All three states on the peninsula are democracies, and reasonable successful economically, with population exchanges and trade happening frequently. So its not like some sort of 'inter-Korean border' situation.

While for Russia... Yep. They are screwed. Like totally screwed. With the conclusion that Germany got out of WK2 being that the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was simply too 'tragically lenient', allowing a revanchist National Populist state to rise again in mere decades. Hence, their decision was to cripple Russia as a stage as much as humanly possible so that no threat will ever come from the east again.

... Once I get to the map showing the various alliances, not to mention the various head of state for each country, you will realize that Russia is even MORE screwed then at first glance.

BTW, in case anyone is wondering about the state of Idel-Ural in the middle of the rump Russian Empire: In the DH version of the mod, after defeating Russia as Germany, it was one of the countries that you can create from the country... However, considering that Idel-Ural is an attempt to recreate the Khanate of Kazan, a polity that have literally not existed since the 15th century, and hence making it a textbook definition of an artificial state on-par with OTL's Manchukuo, not to mention its position being utterly undefenseable, the AI will have a 0% chance of creating said state.... The player, however can do so. With my idea being that Idel-Ural being one of those 'spur of the moment' decisions made by shell shocked German politicians and diplomats in a moment of anger, the same way that the 38th parallel that divided the Korean peninsula was similarly one of those 'spur of the moment' decisions made by the two US Army officers using a National Geographic map and a ruler, without consulting any experts and done at random... With us still dealing with the political consequences to this day.

Surprise they allowed the indochinese to live instead of say siccing the Japanese on them.
What makes you think that everyone from Germany, to Japan, to China have NOT already tried time and again to kill off the Indochinese Union, only to get kicked out again after their 'police action' failed? 🙂

-The Ottomans are going to have some very interesting times ahead. Sadly, I expect this means Armenia is totally and uttterly dead as well.
All things considered, the Sublime Ottoman Federation is one of those nicer paths that the Empire can take. But yes, the Armenian nation is about as much of a dead end as say.... The OTL Tibet independence movement. Especially after the Armenians launched yet another revolution against Ottoman rule during the War in the Desert.

On Korea, I have a book that talks about Post-WW2 Asia, and it gets crazy when it comes to Korea. We literally knew nothing of Korea, same for the British and the Soviets.

The XXIV Crops had almost no intelligence on Korea. Aerial reconnaissance missions were flow over the peninsula and Koreans was captured with the Japanese Army were interrogated, but with 'little result."

This is a quote from the book by Donald MacDoland. "On the way a few of us dug out of the ship's library a boot entitled 'Terry's 1905 Japanese Empire' which had a few pages on Korea...We copied that on the ship's typewriter and then mimeographed it. That was the total of our knowledge about Korea when we arrived at Inchon."

There a lot more, but Korea was mishandle from Day One.

American posters and leftists in the Korean language often contained inappropriate characters, misspellings, and incomprehensible American colloquialism. (Not help the fact most Korean transistors had often worked with the Japanese before hand,, or at least suspected Japanese collaborators. ) We got sick of Korea real fast (And they took it out on the Koreans themselves...Like literally pushing Koreans out of the way and mock them,), and this close to leaving and letting Korea (North and South.) be a UN trust territory just to leave.
