An 1889 map of the United States after it annexes Canada

This map was scanned by a friend from Marc William Palen, The 'Conspiracy' of Free Trade: The Anglo-American Struggle over Empire and Economic Globalisation, 1846-1896. Some interesting states/territories...

The abundance of territories in the far north is a little silly...in the United States, territories were created when a sufficient number of people moved into a given area, necessitating self-government. Colorado, for example, would never have been created if the Pike's Peak Gold Rush and the resultant flood of prospectors didn't occur. There would have been no reason for territories like Melville, Franklin, Mackenzie, Harrison, etc. to exist.

Melville? I'm imagining a band of waylaid prospectors who didn't rush to the Yukon fast enough and some Inuit guides trying to take down a giant polar bear...

Wow, this map is ridiculous... there's no line between Pennsylvania and Maryland
That is what bothering you???? Lol

Oh my god, this map was made by moron with no concept of Land and ability for it to become states on territories. Never mind a small missing line between two established states.

Only way that map would make sense is if global warming made the northern climes of Canada so warm as to encourage large-scale human migration and settlement.

Appears they were merged into one state simply called "Penn"; same thing with the Dakotas.

That I like until Columbia at least. That needs to follow the rivers more.

I think I just found a comparison between this proposed 'State of Columbia' and the 'Pacific Drainage Basin' as one seems to follow the other. The Executive Government and House of Representatives would have researched this. Awesome, I actually found a comparison having not read a government paper.

Otherwise here are two images of rivers in West and North West Canada.

Here is a close-up of Major rivers in West Canada - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Major_Rivers_in_West_Canada.png

The borders make more sense if you keep the source in mind. As a staunch opponent of Free Trade, the author/artist likely believed in the limitless potential for settlement in the Canadian North and Canadian autarchy. Without having read his pamphlet in particular but knowing the Genre, I'd wager he posits if Canada stays the course and avoids free trade, it could have a population and power rivaling the US.

This also explains a number of the new states names, Cleveland, Harrison, Melville etc. All probably chosen to set off the UEL/Orangemen preferred audience :p
