American Purchase of Greenland

hey, all. i heard somewhere a long time ago that there were historical instances where Denmark offered to sell Greenland to the US, and that there may have been legitimate American interest in this, though i know little else about it. i put this thread in the pre-1900 forum because i cant remember the date(s) when the offer(s) were made

any help on this?

Why in the name of the Seven Hells would the US want to buy Greenland? Canada, maybe, but the US? Unlikely.

one supposition i had heard was that they may have wanted it during the cold war to build missile silos. as with most of the other threads i post, im just exploring possibilities ;)

Well, from my very basic understanding of the Kyoto Protocol, the added land mass would give the US additional quota of pollution they're allowed.

Alternatively, they could set up military bases, ports and fishing there..

The only scheme I've heard of to base ballistic missiles in Greenland involved getting permission from the Danes rather than buying the island, and turned out to be technically impossible anyway, because the ice tunnels would pinch shut over time. Greenland just doesn't really offer many advantages as a missile base compared to either the US or Europe.
