American Protectorate in South America

I have always been interested in the fact that among with the larger countries on the South American continent like Brazil, smaller nations like Suriname or Guyana exist in the northeastern corner. WI America, as a result from the Spanish-American War or whatnot, was able to grab a toehold on the South American continent? I envisage the United States exercising a protectorate-like status over the country, much like they did with Cuba and the Philippines.

I know the Spanish-American War wouldn't be a good POD since AFAIK Spain didn't have territory in South America anymore by the time that war rolled around, but what about other PODs? The French losing French Guiana, for example, or Suriname coming under US control?

How about Panama? Technically it was a portion of Colombia which is a South American country. Venezuela is a longshot possibility if one used the Roosevelt Collorary to its fullest, but I think there will just be a lot of dead Marines and the Anti-American fighting there will make the Philippines look like a cakewalk.

Those people down there don't like the US during this time period - and not even 100 years later.
