American Occupation of Mexico

As I'm sure most people know, one of the tings that allegedly brought the US into WWI was the Zimmerman Telegram, a German attempt to bring Mexico into the war.

I realize that whether or not Mexico would ever agree to the Telegram is debatable, possibly ASB. However, here's some rabid hand waving action, and voila! The Entente and the US never get wind of the Telegram, and Mexico invades the US ITTL and I guess joins the CP as well. I don't think it's much beyond the scope of feasibility to expect that Mexico gets their arse beaten very badly by the US.

At the end of this WWI, there is a clause in the peace treaty between the Entente and Mexico allowing the US to occupy parts of Mexico to "keep the peace." What happens next? How does the US occupation proceed?

Violently. Remember that the Mexican Revolution is going on at the same time as WW1 (the current Mexican Constitution dates from 1917) and US interference in the events taking place in Mexico will probably not be seen in a positive light - probably adding fuel to the fire of populists like Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.

Considering that the US invaded Mexico in 1914 and was at war with Mexico in 1916 (thanks to Pancho Villa, no less), it would be seen as more of the same...

The US occupation of Mexico would no doubt be as ruthless and mercantile as the US occupations elsewhere in Latin America...

If Wilson was willing to bend, the British might get the Yucatan as an occupational zone due to their colony of British Honduras...

Well Sr. Villa was a populist and a revolutionary, so I think it made sense for the US to try to get him (even though it troubled Carranza greatly).

And probably worse than the others, due to the Mexican Revolution still going on. Then again, remember that the US preferred Carranza over Huerta - maybe the US could try, somewhat as per OTL, to cozy up to Carranza?

I think that for Mexico it would be no va - "no go".

I don't think Mexico would be in much of a bargaining position ITTL. Remember, they've just lost a war with the United States and presumably the rest of the Entente as well.

I think two bigger points would be the Monroe Doctrine and why the hell would Britain want to occupy Yucatan? Only if there had been attacks from there into British Honduras and they were still ongoing but even then I think its unlikely.
