American Mediterranean?

This has been brought up before, but I think it's a tad silly. If Mediterranean countries like Spain and Naples couldn't hold on to Berber fortress towns for more than a few decades at a time, why could an isolationist country much further away with (at the time) strong instincts against a large standing military and unified federal-level adventures?

Because in 2008, the United States is a huge superpower with massive power-projection capabilities, so clearly it must also be so in the 1790s. :p

Even beyond the capability of holding them, I don't see why the US would want to hold territories abroad... we just wanted an end to the piracy.

Suppose that the US during the Barbary Wars seized control of some areas on the North African Coast. What next?

Hey, all things being equal, it declares victory.:D Then it forces large concessions from the Barbary Pirates to pull out from the region. Similar to OTL, but the USA has also managed to loot a couple cities. End result: Similar to OTL, but +5 Lulz for the US Navy. Not a bad score.
