Because in 2008, the United States is a huge superpower with massive power-projection capabilities, so clearly it must also be so in the 1790s.This has been brought up before, but I think it's a tad silly. If Mediterranean countries like Spain and Naples couldn't hold on to Berber fortress towns for more than a few decades at a time, why could an isolationist country much further away with (at the time) strong instincts against a large standing military and unified federal-level adventures?
