American Intervention in the War of the First Coalition?

Yay! First post! Anyways... Ok, so I heard this idea on another forum, and decided to see what you guys think of it. Reading some of the timelines on here, I imagine you should be able to make something of it. The premise is is that Thomas Jefferson, being the Francophile he is, in spite of the protests of Alexander Hamilton and his supporters, manages to convince George Washington to support France, even going as far as allying with France, in the War of the First Coalition. Now, I am no good at figuring out what might be the decisions of various peoples, but you guys obviously are, so I leave this scenario to you.

Perhaps an earlier War of 1812 since the only effective way for America to strike at England is through Canada.

Wasn't Spain part of this too? Florida and New Orleans are invaded as well, there you go.

The real question is how EFFECTIVE we'd be in invading. :D

It wouldn't be a good idea for the U.S. - we couldn't help France in any significant way and would be unlikely to gain much ourselves.

The US would have little to contribute to the French war effort at this point, as we had no standing army and a very small navy. The US would probably lose BIG if it allied itself w/France against GB.

Been discussed. I posted this scenario already awhile back. https://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=91289

An unlikely scenario. Jefferson was essentially a pacifist who went to great lengths to avoid war with either of the major powers when he was President.
