American Generals without the Civil War

The American Civil War, War Between State or whatever you want to call it, brought many talented generals to prominance in the annuals of American and world history.

Of those men we widely recognise Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. 'Stonewall' Jackson, James Longstreet, Nathan Bedford Forrest, U.S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, George Henry Thomas and Phillip Sheridan as the best of the conflict, with perhaps a few personal choices thrown in.

But without War in the 1860's it can be pretty much assumed than none of these men would rise to prominance as they did, unless some other major conflict occured.

So what would be the fate of the Generals of the Union and Confederate forces if there was no ACW?

Several Generals, pre-war, were heavilly involved in politics, some were involved in the church and most were involved in the military. What would be possible for these men to do with their lives without the ACW?

EDIT: I meant to generalise this and ask what any General from either side could accomplish...not just the affore mentioned Generals in this post.

Jackson will probably remain at VMI; Grant might drink himself to death; Forrest wasn't a military man, so he'll probably carry on making money as he did pre-war IOTL.

Robert E Lee would most likely lead the US Army's Indian campaign till 1870 or so.

James Ewell Brown Stuart would rise to command the US Cavalry in Cuba ( do not believe the Spanish-American War is butterflied away).

George McClellan is remembered for giving his name to McClellan City Kansas while he was in charge of the building of the Trans-Continental railroad. McClellan City is the cow-town remembered for gunfighters/lawmen Wyatt Earp and "Bat" Masterson.

John Hunt Morgan was to expand his stores to the point that today they are considered a near monopoly in most of the World. The chain was helped out greatly by Samuel Walton who was CEO from 1957-1969.

Patrick Claiborne became the most sought after Defense Attorney in US History as he never lost a case.

John Bell Hood is semi famous as the only man Clay Allison the gunfighter shot but failed to kill. This happened while Hood was Sheriff of FT Worth Texas,Hood did however lose his arm in the encounter.

William T. Sherman was a successful banker in California till he was caught up in a feud with JP Morgan. He is best remembered for the quote "Business is Hell".

Wade Hampton is known today as the Bill Gates of slave owners.

Last but not least John C Breckenridge serve as Potus from 1869-1877 and is credited with the passage of the Compensated Emancipation Act of 1874 that "freed alot of people" but a lot of the credit must be given to President Douglas who's administration 1861-1868 many believe avoided a Civil War and laid the ground work for CEA74.

Off Topic slightly: How would WWII US Generals George C. Marshall,George S. Patton, and Douglas MacArthur have turned out had not Marshall's Grandfather (IIRC) been Lee's aide,Patton's GF killed in the ACW,or Doug's Father been a Union hero latter to become a General and command in the Philippines? This is a side-effect of you POD.
