American Dissolution

Maybe the US stayed out of WW I, but Germany still becomes a racist, imperialistic dictatorship similar to Nazi Germany...

Or the US stayed out of WW II.

Either way, the victors are the Nazis or a very similar group. Nuclear bombs aren't developed right away... "jewish science," don't ya know .

In another thread somebody was saying in this situation liberal democracy would not have any supporters.

The US remains technologically backward, isolated, rural. It gradually becomes a one-party state, de facto, though other parties are tolerated--but ignored. Although the US and Germany are both dictatorships, a cold war develops. This could go several ways.

Fascist Mexico and Canada invade the US with Germany's help, and the US gets split up among the invaders. Or the US wins but the US Constitution gets scrapped and replaced with a new document with a new government, a dictator-for-life, and so on.

Or there's no invasion, but the US constitution gets amended beyond recognition and even the country's name is changed.

I like how Crimson Skies did it: Much worse Spanish Flu, a prohibition president and roadblocks going up throughout the states, people staying home in droves on election day with increasingly unpopular presidents, state militias closing down the state borders, followed by the stock market crash.

Plus, it's got Zeppelins, what's not to like?

no one, and certainly not the Soviets, has been able to make a virus that ONLY effects a certain ethnic group.
It is not a virus that only effects a certain genetic group.
It is a virus that has a grater probability of infecting a certain genetic
group. it is a loosely targeted bioweapon. And that loose targeting
is acceptable because of the virtual non-lethal - and very temporary - nature of the weapon.

"These also the minor matter of a viral mutation. Anything that can effect a white American is less than a step away from being able to effect a white Russian. "

So what? The beauty of the concept is that even a large amount of
friendly fire - is perfectly tolerable.

"Considering how viruses spread by air-travel and trade and all sorts of other, unstoppable, ways, its rather absurd for a country to have a weapon targeted to kill itself regardless of where posted."

It isn't. This weapon is only effective if epidemic - and the whole
genetic targeting is to ensure it can't be epidemic except on the
targeted population.

"That has nothing to do with psychologically rewriting the host into a mindless zombie that gets worse in groups. "

The infected won't become mindless zombies. Some of their friends
may never notice any change. They just become more impressionable,
excitable and and sensitive to pheromones. The infection just boosts the production of certain brain secretions, and leaves certain nerve clusters more sensitive than it would be normal. They are not really different of the average Joe who can become
a part of a furious crowd. The infected just require much less stimulus to get into
the stage of "furious crowd ". Really much less.

"A virus that attacks and conquers the brain will quickly see the host die as the other necessary body function start getting bad (or no) messages.
"

It doesn't conquer the brain. It just tweaks the body chemistry (particularly the brain chemistry) so that the person gets "brainwashed" by his/her own internal secretions. And a virus can reside for quite a while in the body without killing the host, or getting wiped out. This particular
virus allows itself to be wiped out after 180 days.

"Bad times for all" is a nice way of putting it.Exactly. Corrupt or not, the people who stole from the USSR knew what they were stealing. In no small part because they usually worked or controlled it.

No knowledge is complete. And the thief might know something about the weapon, but not enough to gauge the full consequences of its deployment. He might know, for instance, about the weapon's non-lethality - but
not how socially a politically devastating it could be.

The Y2K thing was largely overhyped to begin with, for that to even be a plausible disaster. I suspect programmers had already tried the '00' date a few years beforehand just to see what would happen. Most of the larger corporations probably had decent, well-written programs already. The ones that did break down... probably skimped on whatever proprietary software they used.
