American Columbia Territory - War of 1812

I don't know if this is common knowledge, but I just read of it today:

The Pacific Fur Company was an American owned business created in 1810 that had set up shop in the Oregon Country to obtain furs and sell supplies there. Both America and Russia sought to prevent the British owned North West Company from expanding its influence to the Pacific, and so there was an interest in keeping an American and Russian presence in the area. In 1812 the PFC negotiated to supply Russian American settlements in exchange for furs, which PFC ships would then sell in China for a large profit. The PFC ships would buy Chinese luxuries, and return with them to the America.

With the advent of the War of 1812, the British had a much greater military position in the Pacific than the Americans did, and so the PFC sold its assets to the NWC in 1813 to avoid loss through wartime capture. The NWC was later merged into the Hudson Bay Company 1821 by act of the British Government. American influence would not reassert itself until the mid-1840s.

So what do you think? If the Pacific Fur Company had been more lucky, or if the War of 1812 had been avoided, would more of the Oregon Country have been settled by Americans? Would Russia America have persisted to a greater degree?

The British position was that British American border would follow the Columbia river while the Americans were against it. The presence of the American fur trading coming any in the Pacific Northwest would not of changed American position in the region. The largest military power in the Pacific was the British so the presence of fur traders not change it.

Following the US purchase of the French Louisiana in 1803 the US and British decided to fix the British-American border along the 49th parallel.

In 1836 the Oregon territory became a flashpoint in British -American relations and neither country wanted to fight again. While the British profited greatly from Trade with America and did not want to jeapordize that so it agreed to extend the border west along 49th parallel.

Note: there was no way for America to project power in the Pacific Northwest during war of 1812 so nothing could change there.

If there is no war of 1812 then the US be facing Britain with militia instead of federal force in 1830s. Heck the US might not of been able to inflict the same level of defeat on Mexico if there had not been a war of 1812. It was that war that showed the Americans they could not hope to defeat another country with the militia and that the US needed a larger naval and federal army.

they still used a lot of militia in the Mexican War... from what I've read, the Federals really hated them for their lack of discipline and barbaric treatment of the locals in Mexico...

I believe most of militias were from south. This continued into the civil war where state militias did not always follow confederate orders if the General did not approve.
