American-Canadian Alliance thought

Hello, new poster here.

I been looking at this forum for awhile now and I notice that when ever there is a union or alliance of Americans and Canadians it involves (recently) with Canada being absorbed by the U.S. in some war with G.B.

I was wondering if there was a possibility before the 20th century for Canada to cut ties with G.B. and get closer to the United States. When I mean closer I don't mean that one partner getting puppeted or conquered but having each side seeing each other as equal partners and buddies instead seeing each others with distrust. I guess this would have to happen at the time of Canada's dominion status being obtained.

Is this plausible or not

I think it is, but Britain would have to be stupid. From the turn of the century to the 1930's, the British were involved in an Alliance with Japan, to check Russia/USSR. This fell through due to the Japanese-US rivalry, as a the Canadians cried bloody murder over ostracizing the USA(which by this point could easily gobble up Canada). If, for some reason, the British decide to stick with their alliance to Japan, thinking it is more strategically viable than the USA, the Canada would quickly serve ties with the British if UK-US relations worsen. Perhaps a POD could be a more powerful USSR(wins in Poland, perhaps) and the British decide they need Japan moreso than the USA to check the USSR.
