America still Progressive

(most likely been done before)

ok so from the Presidency of Theodore Roosevelt to the presidency of Jimmy Carter (with a short lapse in 20s) every USA was a progressive/ Social democrat (Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson) or a Social liberal (Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford) from Jimmy Carter on every President has been a Conservative (Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush) or a Social liberal (Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama) what POD would stop the Conservative shift in America and keep more progressives in power

The answer is simple.

Have cloning come into fruition earlier and have teddy two come to age and be elected president in 1980. He then pulls a watchmen Nixon and becomes so popular the constitution is changed to allow him to be president for at least four terms.

By 1996 America would likely have completely won the cold war everyone would have much better standards of living and castros bearded head would addorn the oval office mantel place.

I'm not at all convinced that there was a truly "progressive" period in American politics. Even if there were "progressive" periods they would need to be defined not necessarily by administration but by policy.

I agree that the "Southern Strategy" and modern American populism is a new phenomenon in American history. Only in the last 40 years has the United States sustained a large-scale anti-statist religiously-based political party. The recent string of Republican wins reflect the prejudices and concerns of a generation ago; i.e. Roe, social fallout from Vietnam, and exaggerated responses to perceived flaws in the Great Society and similar social programs. The Obama's administrations more social-based policies, like the proposed health care reform, are entirely too green to evaluate. Yet if progressivism is defined as "social democracy", I predict there will be a shift towards that style of government in the younger generations.

some of this just smells of Liberal Wank to me. :p

But I'll play along.

Well one way for the "conservative movement" (*chuckles*) that apparently TOTALLY took over America ( ) to have become derailed would mean that the Democrats, in and around the 70's and 80's, would've had to not associate themselves AT ALL with the leftovers from the Hippie Movement, and subsequent groups (which they became more and more associated with, in many parts of America, as time went on in OTL), THAT or the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq post-9/11 were to have totally bombed early on.

That or there was no gas and/or hostage crisis during Jimmy Carter's tenure.

So in short, staying more like FDR or JFK and less like Jimmy Carter I guess.

I've highlighted the key part that I want to comment on.

Whilst the Democrats were criticised for their links to the various 'identity politics' (ie feminism, minority rights, gay rights, etc and the counter-culture movement, environmentalism, etc) from the 1970's onwards, I would that these movements became such a integral part of what defined the Democrats from the 1960's onwards that to eliminate or even significantly reduce their impact would be to change the historical development of the Democratic party beyond recognition.

Alot of the problems associated with the anti-war movement, etc and their impact on the Democrats came from the split this caused with the Dems traditional working-class base. Perhaps this could be solved by having a POD whereby trade unions in the USA became anti-Vietnam-War, similar to how they were in Australia (this was mentioned before in a comment on a thread I posted as a significant difference between the American and Australian left/liberal politics in the early 1970's).

stop the double whammy of the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan during Carter's term, and you have a fair shot of it... these two events more than anything back in the 70's led to Reagan's election and the following conservative surge...
