America loses the Spanish-American War

US loses the SAW, one of two things happens in 1900, Roosevelt gains control of the GOP on a hawkish pro-military platform and wins the election against Bryant who IOTL spent the war with malaria in FL, or McKinley loses badly to Bryant.

Roosevelt gaining control of the Republican's would largely depend on what he does in Cuba, if he's seen as a hero in an otherwise f-up campaign, than he would be a no brainer. He can paint himself as someone who had the foresight to push to upgrade the US Navy which he did at his time in the Department of the Navy, which he basically ran.

Bryant can be painted as the "Cowardly Lion" that he was IOTL or, depending on how long the war goes, could be painted the same way that Roosevelt is in the above paragraph, minus the Navy work. He could also win on an isolationist, anti-imperial campaign.

Of course, if TR gets shot dead then he won't be doing much afterwards! Even if not dead, he might spend the balance of the war as a prisoner or in hospital - neither is dishonourable or a barrier to success, except that it removes him from the public conscious in the immediate aftermath of the war

I love how almost any pod about America invariably leads to people claiming the USA will conquer Mexico. USA loses to the Spanish in 1898? Conquer Mexico! CSA defeats the USA and establishes their own country? Conquer Mexico! Fascist regime takes over the nation? Conquer Mexico! Nothing changes whatsoever in the Mexican-American War? Conquer Mexico! I don't see how blunted US imperialistic efforts in the Caribbean results in them invading (and conquering) the second-largest North American country (in terms of population and whatnot) especially when said country is more stable than usual and not doing bad at all, really.

The truth is that Americans want someplace warmer than Canada to conquer.

The unwholesome and ungodly defeat of the US triggers a massive response in the collective psyche of the American people and an absofriggenlutely ginormous military expansion is launched.

By 1914 Mexico and Central America have fallen along with the revenge war which not only took the Spanish colonies but Spain itself. The decisive moment, however, is at the point of mutual exhaustion in the so-called Great War, when the US, fresh from overwhelming the Entente, suddenly turns on the Central Powers as well.

With mopping up in Russia completed by 1925 the United States rules North America, Europe and all the formerly European colonies, including Africa and India. With South America pressed into properly subservient treaties the final advance on Japan and China begins in 1930...

While certainly witty Grimm, and also very funny :D that kind of sarcasm is usually reserved for blatant ASB Noob timelines with no basis in reality. Is that how you see the scenario of an American loss in the Spanish-American War.

God, Americans, and all you funny foreigners, I'd like to sincerely apologize for the days of my mis-spent youth in which I found such Amerwank in anyway enticing.

Oh, rest assured I got it, Grimm.

Sadly, there was once a time I would have taken it in eagerly. Tis most embarrassing.

Speaking of embarrassing things, did anyone else realize that the Little Mermaid came out closer to the moon landing than the modern day? And that Toy Story came out 15 years ago?
