What would it take to get America in the Commonwealth of Nations? And what effects would the US joining have on world events?

Get rid of the British monarch as the head of the Commonwealth, have it be more emphasized that all its nations are equal, make it into some sort of free trade thing, and have some other countries that weren't former British colonies join, and the US might consider joining. Now, how to get to that point is another story.

I don’t think its fair to call this asb difficult but not asb how about post ww2 France joins the commonwealth [as there was some talk of]. As the French post war economy recovers other European countries join up and the commonwealth is slowly changed in to an eu style economic union [possibly with own currency] importantly they also eroded some of the British traditions such as the monarch no longer holding even there ceremonial position in the commonwealth. Following the fall of the Soviet Union its former satellites join the commonwealth [as is happening with the eu] and their economies improve this leads some South American countries to join seeing the chance of development and as unlike the eu the commonwealth has always been a more multicultural origination. que the alt timeline global rescission where due to either better management a more efficient unified market or simply dumb luck the commonwealth does much better then the usa the usa which following the collapse of the value of the dollar ends up in economic ruin and with assurances that there foreign policy or civil rights will not be effected the united states joins the common wealth of nations which at this point makes up most of the world economic powers [Europe India etc]. I think giving time for its growth the collapse of the soviets and the erosion of royalist traditions [really important for use membership] this could be achieved by the late 1990s.from then on I see the USA fulfilling a role in the commonwealth similar to otl Britain in the eu a very string member with the capacity to influence other members but so opposed to any further integration or control that they often left out in the cold
