America Alone?

Peope often overstate how important America was in WW1 and WW2, such as saying that both wars would have been lost if America was removed from either equation. So what I'm wondering is, how would the US have faired in either world war if they were completely alone fighting the CP or the Axis?

That's more of an ASB what if, but I understand why you posted it here if you want serious analysis...

It really depends on the exact dates involved.

What would happen to the massive German, Italian, Japanese and British populations of the USA and those descendant from those countries?

Could the USA fight such a war alone without fracturing along ethnic lines?

Apart from Imperial Japan, and maybe WW2 Italy the US wouldn't be able to come to grips with the CP or Axis without serious allies. In both wars they would be limited to trying similar peripheral operations as OTL Britain. In WW1 the German navy was bigger then the USN and would probably defeat it in battle. In WW2 the Germans would be able to overwhelm any US invasion of Europe by railway deployed panzergroup counter-offensives.

Yeah, pretty much.

What? Did the US fracture in OTL? Just because there are a lot of immigrants doesn't mean they'll all just forget their American-ness and start singing the anthem of their original mother country.

Good point.

That depends. I, personally, would side with my Romani brethren if a war ever breaks out with the US, despite the fact that I was born and raised here.

Of course, if America had the misfortune of fighting an army of Gypsies, we know that America would fall within days. So it could just be me finding an excuse to side with the obvious victors. ;-)

Solomaxwell6, don't be absurd.

What with the breakdown in communications during the war some parts of the US wouldn't get word of the surrender for weeks at least.;)

Translated from Naziwank :D : without a secure base such as that provided by the UK, the US would have a great deal of trouble projecting it's superior industrial capcity accross the Atlantic - the logistics are pretty crappy with a hostile or enslaved UK and North Africa. The US still grinds the Japanese into powder, but the US and the Third Reich are unable to come to grips with eachother - at least until 1956, when the Reich, overly impressed by the V-14, end up seriously underestimating US nuclear bombs/month production rates and the number of US nuclear bombers with transAtlantic range. (But then, that's not really WWII any more).

because the world should really fear the large organized terrifyingly militant Gypsy nation-state

It depends on the scenario. Who is the aggressor here? Why is only the US in a war against the CP/Axis? What events preceeded the war?

Wasn't a rather important reason why the US entered the war, or at least supplied the Allies in WW1 and WW2 because a rather large percentage of its population had some affinity towards Britain and France or was descended from it? How would this change if Britain and France are not in the picture?

America entered the world wars for it's own reasons, and Americans supported those reasons more or less. If the US decided for whatever reason that it wanted to fight the CP or the Axis on it's own any ethnic problems within the US would pale in comparison with the task of actually finding some way to beat the armies and navies of these countries.

I thought that most Americans have a German descent:confused:

Most Americans have British/Irish descent, I think.

I think the Germans are the largest _single_ group in terms of contribution to the US gene pool: the Irish, English, Scots and Scots-Irish added together are more numerous. In any event, the US has a looong tradition of disliking the Brits - goes back to some events in the 1770's, or so I hear.

Continents can not defeat one another without the Nuke. So it would be unending Cold war with some really hot flashes.
