Amagi and Akagi: Why did one survive when the other didn't?

As a result of the WNT Japan started work converting two Amagi class battlecruisers into aircraft carriers. In September 1923 though the Toyko Earthquake caused so much damage to Amagi's hull that she had to be scrapped.

Was there any particular reason that Amagi was damaged so badly when Akagi was not or was the former ship simply unlucky?

Also does anyone have any information on the third ship in the class the Atago?

Akagi was built at Kure shipyard
Amagi was built at Yokosuka shipyard
Yokosuka was a lot closer to the center of the earthquake.

Thanks, as the other two were laid down at Kobe and Nagasaki all I need to do is substitute the Takeo for the Amagi or change who gets the orders for which ship.

So which would people rather see as a carrier in 1941 alongside the Akagi and the Atago, the Amagi or the Takao?

The Amagi!

After all its the class name, the original, and work was already being done on her when the earthquake happened. Plus it fits with the theme naming. :)

Amagi was still on the slip when the Earthquake happened(it had been delayed by the Washington Treaty, and the decision to convert it to a carrier, IIRC). Had it been launched like Akagi was, it wouldn't be as damaged.

I wondered if that might have mean the reason when I read Amagi was in a drydock, however Amagi's shipyard being closer to the quake's epicentre does sound plausible too.

Was there a tsunami associated with the quake? If so, even if launched, Amagi may still have problems.

That sounds potentially survivable - but she could get swamped, hit with debris, or pushed ashore depending on the particulars.
