Alternatives to Spiro Agnew in '68

Lets say Agnew is exposed before he can join the ticket.

Nixon will want "impeachment insurance" even without Agnew.

That's just who Nixon was.

So, who will it be?

John Chafee- War Hero, Rockerfeller Republican and Eastern Establishment and good balance to the ticket

Strom Thurmond was supposedly given veto power over Nixon's veep choice in exchange for keeping the Southern delegates for Nixon instead of Reagan, and Thurmond would have approved Brezhnev for Vice President before he approved Rockefeller.

(very interesting link thanks!)

Ah right, I was thinking New York would have balanced the ticket.

What did Thurmond think of Romney?

Romney was a strong civil rights supporter, so I'm sure he would have been unacceptable to Thurmond as well.

I might be wrong here but wasn't Agnew picked in part due to his strong realtions with the Black community as shown by his time as Mayor of Baltimore, so why did Thurmond apporve or was just he was from the South.

I read that he had Strom Thurmond sort his VP long list into "Good", "Tolerable", and "Intolerable". The only names that both Strom and the Eastern Establishment could both live with were John Volpe and Spiro Agnew (both rookie governors without much in the way of records).

Agnew made national news for coming down really hard on black community leaders following the riots in Baltimore after Dr. King's assassination. That presumably made him tolerable to Thurmond.
