Alternative to the T-shirt

Since WWII, the T-shirt has gradually become the world uniform. It's comfortable, looks good, and cheap. Was it an inevitability, could something else have filled its niche?

<_< how can one really replace a T-shirt? I mean, honestly, it's simplicity at work.

Ok, I've thought about it, and the only thing to do is maintain the sense of decorum that died out in the 60s. Maybe it was JFK going out without a hat or the hippies or something else, but by the mid-60s it became acceptable to wear pretty much whatever you wanted. This probably has earlier roots in the 1950s, and of course the relaxed (in a fashion sense) atmosphere of the wartime 1940s.
You have to find ways to make the cool people dress up.
Maybe this would be a good time to link to the mods instead of hippies thread
But I still think you need an earlier POD. Maybe the US doesn't shift fully to a war-footing during World War II and consumer spending remains high. Also, you could make military formality more popular. After all, post-war suit design was strongly influenced by the military cut and remains so to this day. And bomber jackets were very much in style at the time. So why not button-down shirts and khakis? It could work.

One thing you have to rember is back in the 1950's -1960's khakis were highly starched and pressed . As were most button down shirts at that time .
