Alternative Political Parties

You know the game. An ATL with alternate political parties. Easy, right? ;)

Christian National Party of America (CNPA):

Based in the southern United States, this political party was originally founded by a radical reverent who rallied against everything that wasn't white and christian in his church. He became popular in his home state of South Carolina, and soon he founded the CNPA. His party became a place for a wide spectrum from archconservative to neo-nazis. The CNPA biggest success so far are seats in the senate for the states of South Carolina and Georgia.

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)

One of the two national parties, based in New England and the Midwest, the LDP was founded by a merger of the Bourbon Democrats and conservative Republicans in 1884. It is generally considered center-right both economically and socially, and has elected 13 of 20 Presidents since 1900. Its main rival is the Progressive Party.

Environmental Aboriginal Party (EAP)

Founded in 1990 when the Green Party and the Aboriginal People's Party merged to form a single party. The party is know to champion both environmental and aboriginal right's issues, as well as fiscal conservatism and minority rights. Throughout the 90's, the party managed to gain support amoung not only aboriginal people and environmentalists, but with other Canadians living in the northern territiories as well. Though small compared to the major Canadian parties, the EAP has had some surprise achivements. In 2006, all three seats in the house of commons from the territories went to the EAP, which they still hold today. As well, the current premier of Nunavut is a member of the EAP, though officially is an inpendent.

The Progressive Party

Founded from the remnants of the Democratic, Republican, Populist, and other minor more-or-less left-wing parties in the 1890s after a string of LDP victories deprived them of their traditional support bases and augured a whole-scale remix of the American political scene analogous to the one which occurred prior to the American Civil War. The Progressive Party is America's center-left party, both socially and economically, and while less successful in the White House than the LDP, its dominance in the West and Mid-Atlantic, together with sometimes success in peripheral areas of the Mid-West has led to it being a formidable force in Congress, especially the Senate. Few bills can pass without the support of at least some Progressive elements.

(I suppose the next step would be an independent Dixiecrat-type party...)

Partido Porfiriato
The Mexican Civil War of the early 20th century ended in a powersharing arrangement between the Constitucionales and the supporters of Porfirio Diaz, who had died of old age and poor health before a revolutionary climax could be reached; bringing both sides to the negotiation table.

In that first agreement, the rebels' demand for a new Constitution was had, but the conservatives' demand that the federal system not be reinstituted and that Mexican remain a unitary state was begrudgingly accepted by all rebel factions but one, the Southern Liberation Army fighting for regional autonomy and Indians rights.

In the present, interestingly enough, the Porfiriato have not become just another Conservative party but remained true to their original context; as conservative among liberals rather than in the classical Latin American sense of clericalist and pro-Criollo establishment. This has meant a neutral approach to the question of Indian and small landholder rights versus that of the wealthy major landowners, and a hands off rather than religious legislation approach to the Church. In the terms of the modern day the Porfiriato were and are a solidly Liberal-Conservative party.

Union Nationale (Quebec)

Founded by Maurice Duplessis in 1935 as an amalgam of the old Quebec Conservative Party and dissident populist Liberals known as the Action Liberale Nationale. (Same as OTL to 1966). By 1974, the Liberals had been reduced to third-party status due to the emergence of the PQ as the main opposition party. In 1978 the Quebec Liberal Party voluntarily dissolved, and Quebec is now a two-party system, the neoliberal, socially centre-right UN and the socially progressive, social democratic PQ.

The Dixiecrat Party - The Dixiecrats are the oldest political party in the Confederate States of America, having been formed to contest the 1866 presidential election. The party sits on the centre right to far right both socially and economically. Though some of their positions have moderated somewhat in recent years, they are still far more conservative than is typical for North America. The Dixiecrats have held the presidency of the Confederacy more times than any other party, most recently for three six-year terms between 1986 and 2004, and they are currently seeking to make a resurgence in the 2010 elections against their incumbent rivals...

The National Alliance - The current incumbent party, the National Alliance is politically centrist by Confederate standards (sometimes drifting to the centre-right, depending on the issue). Originally known as the Liberty Party, their name was changed to the National Alliance in 1972, following a merger with the considerably smaller and less successful Constitution Party. The new NA would go on to win two terms in the Presidential manor. Having won the incredibly close election of 2004, the NA has had a rough term in office, raising doubts about their ability to keep control of the executive past 2010.

The Progressive Party - A moderate leftist third party, the Progressives have never held the presidency of the CSA. They have, however, had some success in elections to Congress, with their biggest successes having been during the civil rights chaos of the early 1980s. It is unlikely that the Progressives will become a decisive force in Presidential politics for some time, given how the majority of white Confederate citizens view them as little more than socialists.

The Urban Renewal Party
founded in 1984, the URP seizes on the issue of reparations for slavery and urges that such funds be focused on rebuilding city centers across America, describing the beleaguered inner city as "the last active front of the American Civil War."

As a bonus, here's an EV map for the 2004 CSA presidential election.

National Alliance - 105 EV
Dixiecrats - 94 EV

So I'd never actually heard of the National Alliance before you said that, I just picked it because it sounded kinda neo-Confederate. Now I guess I know why. In any case, they have no relation.

What would a Roosevelt/Debs ticket have called their party in 1912 had they attempted to unify the votes against the Two-party candidates?

I hate just calling it the Social Progressives or the "Bullmoose Socialists" Party...

Anyway, that's my submission.

The National Social Popular Revolver Party for Progressive Democracy (NSPRPPD)

A small fringe party somewhat popular in the south, but has also made inroads among low- income earners in large cities like New York and Chicago. The Revolver Party want nationalisation of industries, strong State power, confiscation and redistrubution of the wealth from the "criminally rich". The Revolver Party also support a strong military and a traditional Protestant American identity. Even though the Revolver Party is not a racist organization, some of it's members are racists (especially true in the South). The Revolver Party has adopted a very strict view on immigration though and has several times rallied their supporters around the message to "throw out the garbage". The Revolver Party remain a fringe group though, and doesn't do good in any elections.

parties of the Islamic Republic of America:

Conservative Party:
A populist conservative party the Conservative Party is a large Coalition of generally right-wing groups, as many parties are in the American system, a few points are clear, they're pushing the passage of more religious laws, in some areas thats largely lip service else where it's the pushing of full fundamentalist society by law, the Conservatives are also very non-interventionist/isolationist on all issues, including Trade, the Conservatives wish to have greater control on manufacturing and society, Media controls and state run unions have many in the Opposition calling them Neo-Fascist, the Conservatives control both Houses of the Congress and the Presidency, and have for the 30 year since the Republic was founded.

Reformist Party:
the main Opposition party, of late they have reached a high water mark, the closet they've ever been to controlling ether house of Congress. The Party supports opening to the outside world, though strong support for goods made in the IRA. they generally support a freer Media and Internet, but still support what we would view as a lot of censorship, they share other parties ban on homosexuality (though some Reformists support prison time or treatment rather than the death penalty) as well as a ban on abortion (they share the death penalty view for women and doctors on this issue) they support loosing the divorce laws and lessening controls that fundamentalists have over the lives of their followers.

Catholic People's Party:
A party that represents the interests of the 5% of IRA's population that is Christian (almost all of whom are Catholic). It supports the Islamic state, but it's views and social policy are the same as the Church. While the party has a lock on the two seats in the House reserved for the Christian the party is mostly a state and local party. The Party is seen largely as soft on Crime for their believe in reform of Criminals, many Catholics are also local cops. the party gets a boost in local elections for homosexuals voting for them.

Parliamentation Party

The PP is a political party founded in the early 1980s with the sole purpose of transforming the United States government into a parliamentary system.
The PP's proposed structure of governance has evolved somewhat over time. Currently, the executive branch and its departments would be placed under the authority of the Senator-President (aka Senate Majority Leader), and everything else involving process and structure would remain (overall) intact.

Are all these supposed to be in the Same TL or what?

So Going off Panzerfaust's stuff:

Alianza Latina (Latin Alliance) - a Recent and Minor party in the CSA, and a Staunch ally of the Progressives, primarily based in Florida and Texas, and composed almost entirely of lower and middle class Latinos, angered by the major parties continued failure to even listen to the needs of the CSA's Latin Citizenry. The Pro-Union Alianza Latina is Liberal, almost Euro-Socialist party concerned with Civil Rights, discrimination in the Workplace and Education, and Healthcare. It dominates Politics in places like Florida and Austin, Texas, regularly electing about twenty representatives to the House and usually has it's own senator. The AL doesn't usually bother to run a Presidential Candidate, and now serves as the unlikely Kingmaker in CSA politics thanks to it's Fanatically devoted base, and crucial swing votes in the Congress of the Confederacy.

Yes, the AL's really just Cubans, Mexicans and what not voting as a Block, and the (rather realistic) effects a fiercely regional party with complete dominance in such a region would have.

I was going under the assumption that everything was in a different TL. I do like what you've written though, even if it contradicts some of what I've thought up about the setting. I'm considering actually doing something with it, and you've made me reconsider the role regional parties might play in a modern CSA.

Well, sorry about the contradictions, but they're fairly cool. Feel free to use them if you want.

Thanks, I will probably end up incorporating the idea of a semi-powerful Latino regional party, though possibly not in the exact same form you've put forth. I appreciate the input!
