Alternative Partners for Elizabeth II (or Princess Margaret)?

Question generally about royal marriage. Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark but if they'd never met, would she have to find someone similarly royal?

(alternatively, if Margaret was heir would she have had to have married someone with a bit higher standing than Anthony Armstrong-Jones, OTL's Earl of Snowden)

For Margaret, I've heard the name of John Turner thrown around. Yes that John Turner. The thing is it raises some interesting questions. Turner is Catholic, but in all likelihood would convert to Anglican to marry Margaret. That's fairly easy to solve. Would Turner be given a title? He is Canadian, though born in England. Would Margaret move to Canada? Could Turner still pursue politics?

Problem the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret had to face was that a lot of potentially suitable candidates had been dethroned by 1945. And/or had been fighting on the other side during two global wars. So a hugely reduced pool of suitable candidates and social attitudes not yet developed enough to permit marriage to a commoner. And needs to be a Protestant or prepared to convert. So probably a British aristocrat or a Danish, Norwegian or Swedish Royal.

Plenty of English aristos to choose from if Phil the Greek buys it.

Providing they don't mind their titles merging with the Crown when they die.

*Picks someone at Random from that list *

What about Elizabeth marrying Francis, duke of Bavaria, that would unite the Jacobite and Sophia lines..but he needs to convert to anglicanism for this marriage to happen.

How dare you!

Ooh, that is phresh. That is very good.

Only one flaw, he's very possibly gay. He is at the least a lifelong bachelor. His brother Max?
Max is too young for her, but I think Francis would be a better consort than Prince Philip, the two are likely to be an arranged marriage or a marriage of business and Francis of Bavaria will be another Edward II..

Given the idea I have for a story (Which this thread is braintstorming for, thank you) that's quite amusing. Margaret might have a few other partners over the years though, obviously.

The heir to the British throne or at least a high profile Royal is transgender

And much confusion amongst the handful of Jacobites did ensue

Well as their descendants would literally be at the top of the pedigree in nobility being the future Monarch, I can guess many would be fine with it.

If he converted to Anglicanism I would presume that he would receive a title. Antony Armstrong-Jones received one after all - I see no reason why Turner wouldn't (The Nickle Resolution has always been... capriciously followed) also I believe that a John/Margaret marriage was likely to occur in the latter 1950s, which is when Diefenbaker was this close to reviving knighthoods and titles anyway.

Now it would be interesting what the results of this would be. I don't know if Margaret would move to Canada, Turner's legal career and Bay Street careers could continue, but some may think it inappropriate for him to run for office. That said, I think he could, and the glamour could actually help his career.

Another possibility would perhaps be Turner moving to England and later becoming (or his wife becoming) Governor General at some point? That strikes me as possible, perhaps Countess Rossland, GG of Canada?

What do others think?
