My first thread on post-1900 forum so please bear with me. My wife and I were going through a box while sorting out our office. The contents were some pictures and letters from her grandfather. This particular gentleman was in the British military during World War II and became a POW in late 1942, IIRC. However, I digress...

One of the pictures in the box had what appeared to be a Matilda II. My familiarity, at the time, was limited so I had to do a bit of reading. The arrangement of the engines (2 AEC straight-six water cooled Diesel engines linked by a common shaft) was complicated and time consuming in regard to maintenance. The Leyland Diesel engine would eventually replace the AEC engines, however.

I am aware of some of the limitations of the tank and I am not asking for a complete redesign or to make it the main British tank. I am curious though as to the power plant. Were there any other feasible alternatives to the two previously mentioned engine configurations?
