In the first final the Argentinians hold their nerve and defeat Uruguay in the first world cup.
1934: France 2 - 1 Germany (Hosts: France)
The first European world cup is held in the birthplace of FIFA. The World Cup itself is a poor affair, with the best teams knocking each other out early, leaving a mediocre French team to profit.
1938: Brazil 4 - 0 Uruguay (Hosts: Brazil)
FIFA agree to the policy of rotating the hosting of the world cup between Europe and South America. Brazil are both hosts and victors, with Leônidas starring.
1950: Italy 1 - 0 Spain (Hosts: Switzerland)
For the hosting of the 1950 World Cup, neutral Switzerland was chosen. The tournament resulted in the so-called 'Fascist Final' between defeated Axis power Italy and Franco's Spain. In a match where key decisions went against them, Spain complained that they were denied victory by FIFA being biased against them. Italy's goal came from a penalty.
1954: Hungary 2 - 0 Brazil (Hosts: Argentina)
In a dry final in Buenos Aires Puskas and Kocsis score to defeat Brazil.
1958: USSR 2 - 1 Hungary (Hosts: Italy)
Eight years after the 'Fascist Final' came the 'Communist Final' between defending champions Hungary and the USSR. Despite Hungary being the heavy favourites, the USSR are victorious, with conspiracy theorists suggesting that Moscow instructed the Hungarians to lose.
1962: Brazil 2 - 0 USSR (Hosts: Chile)
Pretty similar to OTL, except the USSR make it to the final.
1966: USSR 2 - 1 Portugal (Hosts: West Germany)
The USSR win their second World Cup with victory over Eusébio's Portugal.
1970: Brazil 1 - 0 England (Hosts: Mexico)
At the first World Cup held outside South America or Europe the Brazilians managed to break England's defensive pairing of Banks and Moore to win the world cup.
1974: Netherlands 3 - 0 Brazil (Hosts: Brazil)
Brazil become the first country to host two world cups. Johann Cruyff shows the Brazilians they don't know every trick in the book.
1978: Italy 2 - 0 Brazil (Hosts: England)
Brazil make their third final in a row. In the final they were defeated by a skilled Italian side.
1982: Italy 2 - 0 Brazil (Hosts: USA)
The Italians defend their title in the USA. The Brazilians chalk this up to the 'curse of the final', causing talented teams to lose.
1986: Argentina 3 - 1 France (Hosts: Argentina and Uruguay)
In the first co-hosted world cup, Maradona inspires victory.
1990: Yugoslavia 2 - 0 Spain (Hosts: Spain)
A solid Yugoslav side defeats the hosts in the final. Two years later the side would not exist, with Yugoslavia ripped apart by civil war, prompting FIFA to introduce qualification for hosts, as they could not allow giving an automatic sport for World Cup '94 to what remained of Yugoslavia, suspended at the time.
1994: Germany 1 - 0 Brazil (Hosts: Colombia)
The 'final curse' strikes again for Brazil, as Klinsmann strikes to win the World Cup for Germany for the first time, and their first World Cup as a united country (ITL).
1998: Brazil 1 - 1 Italy [5-4 penalty shoot-out] (Hosts: Japan)
At the first Asian world cup, Brazil finally overcome the 'final curse'. When Italy took the lead in the final it looked like repeating itself, but Ronaldo levelled the scores in the second half. The game is the first world cup settled on penalties, with captain Dunga taking the decisive kick.
2002: Argentina 2 - 0 France (Hosts: Germany)
Having defeated an out-of-form Brazilian side in the semi-finals, Argentina beat Zidane's France to take the World Cup.
2006: England 1 - 0 Cameroon (Hosts: Paraguay and Brazil)
Cameroon are the first African team to make it to the final), where they are defeated by a talented English team. Samuel Eto'o ends the world cup as top scorer.
2010: Argentina 3 - 1 Germany (Hosts: Morocco)
In the heat of Morocco, Argetina defeat a young German side.
2014 World Cup to be held in the Netherlands and Belgium.
2018 World Cup to be held in Peru.
2022 World Cup to be held in Australia.
