Here's the 1st in Series III of my AltHist Infoboxes:
Wiki-1.jpg

I've already begun work on Series IV. And if anyone would like to do an infoboxe for Series IV, please let me know

Anyway, a revised version of my old infoboxes, starting with the United States. The old one can be seen here.

The United States of America (commonly called the United States, the U.S., the USA, America and the States) is a federal constitutional monarchy comprising 20 commonwealths, 119 states, 23 territories, 20 commonwealth capital districts and one federal district, with a further 39 crown territories and 17 associated states administered by the imperial government n Washington, D.C. Six commonwealths can be found in the continent of North America on Earth, bound by the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Two commonwealths can be found on Luna, two on Venus, three on Mars, three on Pallas, one on Ceres, one on Europa and two on Ganymede. The country also possesses several territories on a dozen more worlds and moons.

At 11.31 million square miles (29.29 million km2) and with over 821 million people, the United States is the third largest country by total area, and the third largest by both land area and population (behind only Germany and China). It is one of the Pentarch's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries and a progressive stance on civil rights and assimilation with alien races. There are currently eighteen federally-recognized alien races in the United States today. The U.S. economy is the Pentarch's largest national economy, with an estimated 2083 GDP of $43.02 trillion (15% of the national global GDP and over 13% of the global GDP at purchasing-power parity).

The first United States Constitution (called the Philadelphia Constitution) was adopted on September 17, 1787; its ratification the following year made the states part of a single republic with a stronger central government. The Bill of Rights, comprising ten constitutional amendments guaranteeing many fundamental civil rights and freedoms, was ratified in 1791. The current United Stats Constitution (called the Chicago Constitution) was adopted on January 1, 1990. The Chicago Constitution decentralized the federal government into several commonwealths so that government could run smoothly spread out across so many planets. Academy Award-winning actor Phil Benson was elected the first Emperor of the United States in 1991.

Through the 19th century, the United States displaced native tribes, acquired the Louisiana territory from France, Florida from Spain, part of the Oregon Country from the United Kingdom, Alta California and New Mexico from Mexico, and Alaska from Russia, and annexed the Republic of Texas and the Republic of Hawaii. Disputes between the agrarian South and industrial North over the expansion of the institution of slavery and states' rights provoked the Civil War of the 1860s. The North's victory prevented a permanent split of the country and led to the end of legal slavery in the United States. By the 1870s, its national economy was the world's largest. The Spanish–American War and the First Eurasian War confirmed the country's status as a military power.

Space pioneer Robert H. Goddard launched the first satellite into space in 1927, beginning the first space race that was interrupted by Second Eurasian War in 1939 and the Pacific War in 1942. The United States defeated the Japanese Empire in the Pacific War and found itself in a three-way cold war between Nazi Germany and a rump Soviet Union. The United States controversially lost the Great War in 2019, but it has since recovered and has once again become a major superpower as the leading nation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The United States has been engaged in a series of bitter anti-colonial wars over the past thirty years as many current and former colonies and territories fight for their independence. These colonial wars often act as proxy wars between the United States, Germany and China.

I like how even with Martians and Cyborgs running around they still divide humans into white, black, and asian. :p

VulcanTrekkie might get a kick out of these next ones.

The Chicago Constitution of 1991 decentralized the federal government, creating a third tier in the federal structure. The Untied States under the Chicago Constitution is a lot like the European Union or the pre-Statute of Westminster British Empire. States generally go their own way on a lot of social and domestic issues, but the Imperial government in Washington has complete authority over foreign policy and defense. Commonwealths send Resident Envoys to other commonwealths to serve as their ambassadors and a Resident Envoy to the federal government; the federal government will also appoint a Resident Commissioner as the federal government's representative to the commonwealth. Resident Commissioners also serve as the de facto foreign minister of the commonwealths.

The Commonwealth of New England is one of the most populous commonwealths. It it comprised of nine states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont. It tends to be more socially liberal than the most, and is also home to great Ivy League schools and Wall Street, the financial heart of the United States.

Premiers are the heads of government of the commonwealths. In New England, the premier serves a four year term and is elected by an electoral college (though the fact that you only have to win New York and Pennslyvania to win the election is leading to a government-backed reform movement). The current premier is Virginia Hardy-Jones who has served since 2079. Her administration is notable for her social reforms, primarily the Civil Rights Act of 2081 that granted new rights to aliens.

Each commonwealth has their own political party, but like the European Union, these form alliances for federal elections (Representatives and Senators still represent states, not commonwealths, at the federal level). In New England, the two most dominant political parties are Freedom Forward and the Conservative Party. Freedom Party is a centre-left party affiliated with the federal Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for America (ALDA) while the Conservative Party is affiliated with the American People's Party (APP or Populists). Technoists are radicals who argue for a more science and technology oriented society (think of them as the late 21st century's socialists), while the American Front is a far-right conservative populist party.

(if you squint real hard the Lebanese coat of arms kind of looks like what the New England coat of arms would be)

what territory does Venice actually have?

i bet they have Crete and Cyprus, among other holdings, right?

No. Venice essentially has (though not precisely) modern Veneto, Friuli, and parts of Slovenia and Croatia (essentially, though not precisely, their Istrian and Dalmatian holdings OTL, plus some extra land they've acquired over time to give them strategic depth), and the Ionians. The big islands and Albanian territories are long gone, due to a combination of foreign conquest and local insurrection. Venice is a significant nation, but it isn't nearly the power it once was. As you can probably tell from the names being banded about in the second infobox, there are some powerful Slavic families in the republic, though they've been assimilated into Venetian culture (at least, the wealthy have; the poor, not nearly so much, though this Venice is a real, functional, if conservative and semi-aristocratic, democracy.

American writer Ambrose Bierce once said, "War is God's way of teaching Americans geography". German Reichskanzler Josef Ratzinger would add to that, saying that "if God teaches Americans geography with war, then Americans must be very good at geography". The armed forces of the United States are the largest in the Pentarch, both in terms of size and in total defense spending. The President of the United States serves as the commander-in-chief, while the monarch of the United States holds the ceremonial title "First Marshal of the Union". The Department of Defense oversees all branches of the military except for the Coast Guard and Frontier Security.

The most senior uniformed officer is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Each Commonwealth has its own military in the form of a defense department and a National Guard, which is separate from the military's reserve component. Each commonwealth National Guard is subordinate to the federal Department of Defense; the chief of each National Guard (or a duly appointed representative) has a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The U.S. Foreign Legion is directly descended from the earlier French Foreign Legion. Following the defeat of France by the Germans during the Second Eurasian War, Free French units continued to operate in Africa and the Middle East until their own defeat. These units made their way to the United States were they were formed into the U.S. Foreign Legion under the command of General Charles de Gaulle. During the early years of the Foreign Legion, most of its legionnaires were either former French military personnel, former Japanese military personnel or Jews who escaped from Europe.

Today, the U.S. Foreign Legion is an elite combat force that has members from more than 160 different countries. Approximately a fifth of legionnaires are Americans while more than two-thirds of all officers are Americans. The Foreign Legion has served with distinction in the colonies and beyond. It still retains the history, traditions and uniforms of the old French Foreign Legion (they still wear their white French-style kepis, earning them the nickname "Whitecaps"). The Foreign Legion is comprised of twenty five brigade-sized legions that have both ground and air elements.

The Office of Frontier Security is, ostensibly, a paramilitary gendarmerie. However, in reality, it is a military in its own right. It serves as a genarmerie, border patrol and military all at the same time. Its personnel numbers and budget aren't reflected in the numbers below since it's not under the authority of the Department of Defense or Joint Chiefs of Staff. Originally under the DoD, it was transffered to the Department of Homeland Security following the 2019 Treaty of Minsk, and subsequently, the Department of the Interior. There has been an ongoing dispute between DoD, DHS and Interior about who truly owns Frontier Security.

Frontier Security and the Foreign Legion has born the brunt of the wars of imperialism and colonialism, while the Army has remained in the Inner Planets to stave off German and Chinese aggressions. Frontier Security has its own ground, air and sea forces. It primarily operates light, cost-effective units. It has a few heavy armored brigades, some squadrons of the top-of-the-line air superiority fighter and a few full-sized cruisers and carriers, but for the most part, but these are only for more dangerous regions of the Pentarch.

Ground Forces (GROFOR) is primarily comprised of light infantry, in particular, air cavalry backed up by helicopter gunships (more than two-thirds of all GROFOR troopers are air assault-rated). The Maritime Forces (MARFOR) has a mix of littoral combat ships and Coast Guard-esque cutters. Its Air Corps has the late 21st century equivalent of F-5 Freedom Fighters, A-4 Skyhawks, A-10 Thunderbolts and AC-130 gunships. Frontier Security also has its own nuclear arsenal, which most people outside of Frontier Security think is a very bad idea.

Why in God's name would New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania be included in New England? Such a polity could not truly call itself 'New England,' as the New England people would be a minority within their own state. I know most people outside of the Northeast don't understand what the boundaries of New England are, but even still.

Yeah! How dare us New Yorkers be included in New England! Connecticut however is rightfully New York territory!

Because the borders would've been damn awkward if I hadn't shoved those three into New England. And the whole New York metropolitan area would've been entirely confused and fucked up if Connecticut and New Jersey weren't lumped in with them. And if New Jersey went with them, then Pennsylvania had to go to because of the Philadelphia metro area.

Not necessarily. In the modern European Union, there are large metropolitan areas that sit astride national borders, such as Strasbourg or the Ruhr area along the Rhineland. Since the creation of the Schengen Area, someone can live in the Netherlands yet work in Germany, for example. And I'm sure that in this scenario there aren't customs checkpoints along the borders between the commonwealths, so you could have a similar situation. Or if not, you could break off Fairfield County, CT and put it with the New York commonwealth (or whatever it'd be called) in exchange for territory upstate (such as counties adjoining Lake Champlain perhaps?)
