The 2132 Columbian general election was the 22nd general electuon under the Chicago Constitution. Following two strong years of economic growth and buoyed in the polls (along wtih his Liberal and New Democratic allies), incumbent President Benjamin G. Thurman called for an early election. Thurman was very popular personally, and was a long-time protege of former President Douglas Grayson. The expansion of NAWAPA and treaties with Canada and Mexico had created millions of new jobs and brought fresh water and electricity south from the Arctic. Sarah Winstead had been elected the new leader of the Progressive Conservatives, taking over for long-time leader Jake Dupree. Winstead tacked the PC to the left in order to keep up with Thurman and the Labor Party, but government was very popular at the time. The three parties in government managed to increase their seats, but the real winers were the left-nationalist Pioneers, lead by the young Olympia Rockefeller. Expansion and imperialism was becoming more controversial, as some saw the United States as over taxed, while others saw the need for further expansion. But Thurman and the Labor Party had remained uncomitted to either side. They had received a larger mandate, but the rise of the Pioneers and other similar organizations was only growing.

This is a side project I've decided to do, an off shoot of sorts of A Jovian Night's Dream and the various infoboxes I've been posting. The conceit is basically a slightly modified change to the American political system. Each commonwealth has its own unique party system, all based on a parliamentary system. I'll be doing boxes and information for each of the commonwealths. While the politics are a bit different, things will stay largely the same. So it's an AH of an AH.

Next up, 2006:

Though Paul Martin managed his minority government rather smoothly in its first few months, largely thanks to the NDP supporting most of Martin's important legislation, the government soon fell as the NDP along with the Conservatives, whose desire to see Martin's government defeated was no secret, sensed an opportunity to make further gains and forced an election for January 2006.

Though each party failed to make gains in the popular vote, the Conservatives made an impressive increase in terms of their seat count, gaining nearly 30 seats and coming only 3 seats behind the Liberals. Many pundits would later say that, had Harper's Conservatives won a plurality of seats, the NDP would have allowed the Conservatives to form the government (as opposed to seeking a coalition with the Liberals). Instead, Martin's Liberals came out on top with another minority government, as both the Liberals and Jack Layton's NDP lost seats.
