Seige of Ba Sing Se (now with a proper write up!)

Many advanced forms of bending have murky origins. Bloodbending seems to have been developed independently at least twice. And despite increasing evidence that late 300s/early 200s BG bandit Xu Ping An invented the form, the Fire Nation still insists lightning generation was developed by the Royal Family. However no such ambiguity exists with metalbending.

Long thought to be impossible, Metalbending was developed by Toph Beifong while in captivity in 100 AG, by bounty hunters working for her family. She would continue to utilize and refine the form throughout the remainder of the Hundred Year War.

The from draws heavy influences from Beifong’s own personal style, which was a combination of forms popular in her hometown of Gaoling and moves she learned from studying the movement of Badgermoles (which closely resembled Archaic Earthbending). Technically speaking it is the impurities in the metal being bent, and different levels of refinement pose different challenges for a metalbender. In addition only roughly 30% of earthbenders can metalbend, although the reasons for this remain unclear.

Following the War Beifong embarked on her famous feud with the Great Sages of Ba Sing Se, who refused to recognize her accomplishment as she had not passed any sort of Earthbending exam, and was in fact unable to do so due to her inability to complete the written section. However Beifong was not deterred, and many prospective students, including future Chancellor Ho Tun, saw the obvious benefits. It was King Bumi of Omashu who provided funds for the first Metalbending academy, which would later become the site of the city of Zaofu.

The center of metalbending shifted to Republic City with Beifong, whose metalbending students formed the core of the new police force to the point where the two became synonymous. Her later work showed specialization of the form for policing. After Beifong’s abrupt retirement in 143, her two daughters would become the premier innovators of metalbending.

The elder daughter, Lin Beifong would continue her mother’s later work in Republic City. Republic city metalbending is a direct, forceful art, focused on practicality above else. Most developments are made on the fly, often without a formal name. Influences from other bending forms common in the city are rampant. Even taking into account police training, there is little formal record keeping of the Republic City style.

In contrast Suyin Beifong’s Zaofu School is a deliberate effort to earn metalbending the kind of respect that other forms of bending receive. An emphasis is placed on the beauty of the form, and the possibilities it creates. Each new technique is rigorously recorded, and accompanied by philosophical principles, unlike the slapdash Republic City style. It should not be mistaken as impractical however, Zaofu Metalbenders formed the core of Kuvira’s Army of Unification and proved their power.

Counter-metalbending tactics typically consist of several types. There are of course, other types of bending. Some Metalbenders have been known to neglect traditional earthbending styles, leaving them weak on that front, although others are masters of earthbending as well. Chi-blocking and electric gloves can also be used, although many Metalbenders use shielding. Finally metal refined past a certain point becomes unbendable. All such metal has been termed “Platinum” although any refined metal works and using true platinum for this purpose is actually quite rare.

Since its creation metalbending has undoubtedly changed the world. Construction has become far more rapid. Anti-earthbending tactics perfected over generations became worthless overnight. The form’s development has been rapid, and several proto-schools have been developed outside the wider Beifong Family. It remains to be seen just how far metalbending go.

The 1964 United Kingdom general election took place on 15 October 1964
h4kxgy1.png

five years after the previous election and thirteen years after the Conservative Party, first led by Winston Churchill, had entered power. It resulted in the Conservatives, led by its fourth leader, Sir Alec Douglas-Home, losing the election to the Labour Party, led by Hugh Gaitskell, with Labour having an overall majority of fifty two seats. The election ended Labour's thirteen year spell as the opposition and began its domination of Scotland and seventeen years in government under three Prime Ministers.

The Liberal Party, fighting its second election under leader Jo Grimond, achieved their highest number of seats since 1935 and the best third party performance in terms of votes since 1929.

Hugh Gaitskell's government largely continued the economic policies of the Conservative governments, avoiding increased nationalisation of industry, and had a heavy focus on personal liberty, investing in the welfare state, full employment, securing industrial democracy and redistributing economic power more evenly across the country.

Gaitskell's government departed from the Conservative policy of seeking British membership of the European Economic Community (EEC) arguing that while in principle it did support membership, in reality it would cause unnecessary damage Britain's relations with the Commonwealth and cause Britain to cease to exist an independent nation due to the perceived heavy resistance of the EEC to reform.

Gaitskell would go on to win the 1969 general election and serve as Prime Minister for a total of eight years until his unexpected death in 1972 at the age of 66 after which he was succeeded by his Chancellor, James Callaghan, who would win the 1974 and 1977 general elections for Labour.

Sir Alec Douglas-Home would resign as Leader of the Conservative Party in 1965 and was succeeded by Reginald Maudling.

KS-IVB Orbitanker

Initially named 'Ops', consort of Saturn and the Roman goddess of plenty, the designation of the KS-IVB Orbitanker imitated the tri-service designations used by the US Air Force and US Navy.

Inserted into orbit by a two stage Saturn VE, the tankers would use their J-2S engine for a total of 40 seconds to pursue the vehicle to be fuelled, closing with their quarry with a series of reaction control system (RCS) burns. The fuelling probe on their nose would then extend, before completing a ‘hard dock’ and transferring LOX and LH to the receiving vehicle via the probe.

Once fuelling was complete, each Orbitanker would separate before firing its RCS engines to depletion, targeting a destructive re-entry over the Pacific Ocean.

Willie Colón is a living legend of the Latin American musical history. Simply saying his name is the same as embarking on a journey of emotions, sounds, rhythms and instruments starting in Puerto Rico and going through Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Cuba to finish in the place where the world converges: New York City. He's an incredible singer, producer and composer, and to whom the deceased Héctor Lavoe and Rubén Blades owe the success of their respective careers. Without him, the Salsa music wouldn't have been the same. But being a musician isn't the only thing Colón is good at.

After narrowly defeating Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY) in the 1994 Democratic primary in New York's 17th Congressional District, Colón was elected as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives with 61.7% of the vote. Later, he would be reelected with wide margins in 1996, 1998 and 2000. In 2001, Colón announced his decision to run for mayor of New York City taking into account the extremely high levels of support he enjoyed among the city's Hispanic population and among his constituents. Colón also had the backing of Fernando Ferrer, who decided not to run because of the lack of support for his candidacy from the Latino population of the city, which would have been his main supporters if he had decided to run. Another demographic group that sympathized with Colón was the LGBT community, which was familiar with his work at the Latino Commission on AIDS and his famous song El Gran Varón ("The Great Man"), which dealt with homosexuality, transgenderism and AIDS in a very constructive and positive manner.

In the Democratic primary, Colón narrowly managed to secure 40.5% of the vote, which was enough to avoid an expensive runoff between him and Mark Green, securing the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City. After he secured the nomination, he got highly positive media coverage and donors were willing to spend money on his campaign, which badly needed it to offset the advantage of the Republican candidate Michael Bloomberg, who spent $74 million on TV ads during the campaign and who also had the support of the extremely popular Mayor Rudy Giuliani, especially after the terrorist attacks of September 11. Colón also got the support of many fellow musicians such as Jennifer López, Marc Anthony, Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades and Ismael Miranda, who campaigned and sang with him. In the end, Colón was able to achieve victory.

The following song is Gitana ("Gypsy"), one of his most famous singles and one of the most classic songs of Salsa. Enjoy it :p.

Tales of the Archipelago

1594858319385.png
1594858327512.png
1594858343371.png

...........................
Much like their Airbending neighbours the Fire Nation Archipelago was always a deeply spiritual place. It was the strength of theirs beliefs that allowed the Fire Sages to unify the Island centuries past, bringing an end to the Era of Warlords. Unlike the Air Monks, however, who only ruled a few hundred thousand in their four corners of the world combined, the Fire Sages had dozens of millions of subjects to deal with. What developed was a deeply complex hierarchy and rigid system of beliefs and authority, that subjugated every man, woman and child to the temporal and spiritual rule of the Fire Sages Council.
.............................
Fire Lord Ikaze had been a proiminent Fire Sage, attaining their highest rank. Unlike most of his brethren, he held the controversial belief that man had grown powerful enough to subjugate fire. He "proved" that belief by slaying the White Dragon Anghar, the first time man had done such a thing. Ikaze then proclaimed himself "Fire Lord", and with the support of secular feudal lords such as Lord Lee, and the commander of the Amber Guard, General Fang Tu, he seized power for himself. His ascencion would usher the "Era of the Bright Dawn", as it was meant to signify a new age for the Fire Nation. Under his directions, the position of Fire Lord would become one of absolute power, backed by supposed divine gifts, and the bloodline would approach divine veneration. His rule would be marked by early industrialization efforts, Dragon Hunting, and increasing nationalism and militarism, which would culminate in the beginning of the Hundred Years War at the hand of his grandson Fire Lord Sozin.
...............................
Prince Tezulon was the cousin of Fire Lord Sozin, and his elder by 9 years. As a member of the royal family, and nephew to a Fire Lord, Tezulon had a privileged life, and was educated at the prestigious Yellow Moon Academy. Growing up, he expressed ardent support for the Nationalist and Militarist ideas that had been formenting in tha nation, as well as for the continuous industrialization of the country. He made himself a central figure in the "Imperialist Movement" that marked the rule of Sozin, founding the "Society of the Fire Lily", which preached the superiority of Fire nation citizens and culture over the rest of the world, and advocated for expansion as both a material need and a moral good. He attained the position of Chancellor, and shaped many of the policies of the nation during his 45 years tenure, before dying an old man of 102 during an inspection of the Colonies.
