The Five Wisdoms

Bumi was not born a Prince of Omashu, instead being the illegitimate son of King Inda IV and a court jester. In his youth he was a friend of Avatar Aang before the latter's disappearance. His trademark eccentric behavior developed during this time, often playing pranks on his family. However he would unexpectedly become heir apparent the year after the Air Nomad Genocide, as his legitimate brother Inda was killed as part of the Delegation of Reckoning, forcing Bumi to become the new heir.

Bumi would prove himself a powerful bender, helping give Fire Lord Sozin his first major defeat at Mu Bay, holding the landing off long enough with a combination of Earth Bending and interpretive dance for the Southern Fleet to destroy the Fire Lord’s fleet. This victory would ensure that for nearly the entire war, the Southern Earth Kingdom would remain free of occupation. Shortly thereafter Inda IV died in his sleep, and Bumi donned the crown of Omashu. Which he replaced with some antlers because “it looked way cooler.”

Bumi’s role in the early stages of the war was largely limited to supplying the vast armies of the North From the relatively secure south, and keeping the south inline. Many Kings of Omashu would have taken the opportunity to either declare independence from Ba Sing Se, or even allied with the Fire Lord to get even with their old rivals. But Bumi would hear none of it, famously ordering the construction of a mail chute from his throne room to the dungeons so that any defeatist advisors could be swiftly imprisoned.

The Rise of Azulon saw new challenges for Bumi. Omashu was forced to watch helplessly as her stalwart ally the Southern Water Tribe, was slowly dismembered by the Fire Nation. With the retreat South of the Tribesmen, the Fire Navy earned free reign over the seas, exposing much of the Earth Kingdom to raiding. Here Bumi’s diplomacy shone through. Despite his occasionally odd tactics (asking for “honest opinions of my hair” as tribute, trading gum for rock candy) the King of Omashu forged a powerful coalition in the south, bankrolled by rich families such as the Beifongs. Bumi stands out as one of the few Earth Kingdom leaders to have genuinely friendly relations with the sandbenders, whom he called “the only sane people on the planet” and “surprisingly good at cooking sunfishwhale, what with living in the desert and all”.

Bumi initially had good relations with the Earth Kings, sending support and men to aid in their desperate battles for control of the North. However as the Zheng Dynasty declined relations deteriorated. Newer kings feared Bumi’s Earth Bending skill, and thought he coveted the throne. To be fair, some did whisper that Bumi was the only king worth the name, particularly as the Fire Nation crept closer to Ba Sing Se. Bumi spurned all such talk, dutifully sending his tribute, although he did not help matters by sending pranks “in the hopes that I can get the Dai Li to laugh.”

The late stages of the War saw Bumi forced again to face combat personally, although he no longer could face armies alone. The Fire Nation broke out of the colonies and swamped the Earth Kingdom. The regency of King Kuei essentially ended any central direction of the war effort, and the Earth Kingdom fractured badly. Bumi played little role in the Defense of Ba Sing Se, although his presence on the Fire Nation’s Southern Flank did divert some troops from Iroh’s campaign.

Bumi was now the only person alive who remembered the war’s beginning.

Bumi would briefly host the Avatar on his way to the North Pole, then would face the Army of the Great Divide as it marched South on Omashu. Controversially he would surrender the city and himself without a fight, fearing mass casualties from an urban fight. He would spend his time imprisoned needling his captors with bad jokes. When the time came they were either so endeared that they surrendered without a flight or fled in terror.

However the Omashu Army was nonetheless able to withdraw in good order, and supplied many of the forces used on the Day of Black Sun. That same day, Bumi was able to escape his confinement and single handedly evict the Fire Nation from his city. He called it "a nice bit of exercise" and "very fun." This action seriously disrupted Fire Nation supply lines and prevented a total occupation of the South.

Bumi made his way North, likely via his contacts in the Order of the White Lotus, and joined the Order outside of Ba Sing Se. There he played a key role in the reconquest of the city, backing the renthronement of Kuei.

There is some dispute about whether Bumi used spiritual means to extend his life or whether he was just really old. When asked he replied "why not both?" And then laughed far too much. In any event, his health began to fade after the end of the war. He found time to become a great patron of Metalbending, infamously disguising himself as a child to get into the first classes offered by Toph Beifong.

Bumi never married ("I'm a king, if I want some cake I can get some cake without all the the trouble of getting married") and so obviously there was significant concern over who would succeed him. To put these fears to rest he organized a city wide scavenger hunt to select an heir, which was won by a cobbler named Mochee. Bumi would spend his last few years training Mochee in the arts of Earth Bending, ruling, and pie throwing.

King Bumi of Omashu would die aged 121 in 109, after the longest reign of any known monarch. His funeral was attended by all the world leaders, who got to witness a funeral procession designed by Bumi himself. There were bad puns, good puns, sing a longs and heartfelt goodbyes. And at the end everyone got a gift bag filled with rock candy.

This is amazing.

I saw Book Three: Fire (I have the DVDs of the three seasons) a few weeks ago just for fun. I loved Avatar when I was a kid and I still do.

Makes me wonder what happened in Omashu when Kuvira became the Earth Kingdom's Provisional Leader

It seems like the kingdom of Omashu broke in 3 at some point between Bumi's reign and Kuvira's takeover. The southernmost third (which contains the city of Omashu) was one of the last places Kuvira took over (right before Yi)

The Conscience of a Libertarian 2/2

Mario Cuomo would be remembered as a popular president, but there was little denying that his second term in office was a stressful one. Not only had he to deal with the Kosovo Crisis, but as well as the threat of Islamic terrorism. The world was stunned when a massacre was carried out by Al-Qaeda and the Armed Islamic Group of Algeria at 1998 FIFA World Cup in Marseille, France, leaving hundreds of spectators and players dead. Cuomo and the United States military were a key ally in French President Lionel Jospin’s response to the unexpected bloodshed. By all accounts it was a success, leading to the death of Osama bin Laden in October of 1998, but it raised a question to the isolationist Libertarians. Why were we helping other countries when we ourselves had not been attacked?

The Marseille attacks were old news by the time of 2000 election, leaving anti-interventionism a small issue in the campaign. Rather economics and social issues were the main focus, and Nolan polled very highly on both. To the GOP, he was a baby-killing hippie who disrespected the importance of big-government conservatism, to the Democrats he was a fascist who wanted corporations to place every piece of civil rights legislation in the office shredder.

Yet to many, he was the obvious choice for the next president of the United States.

Nolan’s running mate would be Californian congressman Art Olivier. His opponents were Governor Jeb Bush and Senator Dick Thornburgh for the Republicans and Senators Diane Feinstein and Richard W. Fisher for the Democrats.

Despite polling suggesting a Feinstein victory, pundits were surprised to see Nolan become the first Libertarian president. The victory was in-part blamed due to the weak Bush campaign; with Governor Jeb being painted as both an inefficient wimp and a dangerous warmongering authoritarian by the Nolan campaign. This siphoned many conservative voters who voted for Pete Wilson in 1996.

Nolan's agenda in his first term included defunding of federal public education, less American military presence in Eurasia, a decrease in the War on Drugs, the strengthening of second amendment rights, and vast deregulation of the economy. While all of these were controversial, they became truly dismissive by the mid 2000s.

Come 2004, and Nolan narrowly won reelection against Illinois Governor Glenn Poshard and New York Senator Rudy Giuliani.

That’s when the second-term curse, that which plagued Reagan and Cuomo, started.

Government deregulation of FEMA was at the forefront of the Hurricane Katrina scandal, with opponents stating that Nolan had killed hundreds of lives and gutted an agency to the point were it count not properly handle a such a mammoth crisis. In 2007, the Virginia Tech shooting placed greatly placed liberal scrutiny on the President's lax gun laws; latter the great recession brought to light the flaws of libertarian market economics. Nolan's approval ratings plummeted and Vice President Olivier's offerings to the public in his own presidential campaign rang as tone-deaf. In the summer of 2008, an Islamic terror attack in Denver, Colorado (the deadliest in American history) brought national security, a weak point of the Libertarians, to the public forefront. Olivier did not help his image by saying that the attack was a "deep-state false flag" to lure the nation into war in West Asia. Not even the selection of popular former governor of Minnesota Frank Germann helped much.

The Democrats made history with Texas senator Ron Kirk, an African-American, as their nominee, running him with Roy Barnes. The Republicans picked North Carolina Governor Richard Vinroot and Bobby Jindal, the latter quite famous for his image as a hero against the federal government in the Katrina aftermath. Not only did both campaigns reinvigorate their parties, but they had great electoral success. Kirk became the first black president, and Vinroot did the best for a Republican since George H.W. Bush. Olivier, in fact, did so poorly that he won not a single state or electoral vote, signifying the great tainted image that Nolan had acquired in his final years in office.

David Nolan died of a stroke on November 21, 2010 in Tucson, Arizona. He and his legacy continues to be debated today, and will doubtlessly so for many more decades.

1990: the first free and fair elections are held in East Germany. The new government promises rapid reunification with the West, with overwhelming support in both countries. However, to succeed, the four Allied powers must be brought on board - but they are not so enthusiastic. Britain's Thatcher and France's Mitterand fear a reunified Germany could dominate the EU and destabilise the already-fragile state of continental geopolitics, and for these reasons they oppose it almost from the start. Gorbachev is an early supporter, but as he becomes increasingly troubled by domestic affairs, he speaks out less and less frequently. The final straw comes when the Bush administration in the US, generally distant and apathetic about reunification throughout 1990, aligns itself with the British and French position. Shortly thereafter, Gorbachev quietly withdraws his support as well.

Western Chancellor Kohl and Eastern prime minister de Maizière try in vain to revive negotiations with the powers, but their attempts are fruitless. De Maizière, who stormed to office at the head of a coalition almost single-mindedly dedicated to reunification, resigns in 1991 and retires from politics, having failed to achieve the dream. He is succeeded by Klaus Reichenbach, minister for the prime minister's office, who is tasked with steering the German Democratic Republic into an uncertain future. The fragile coalition constructed by his predecessor fractures almost immediately: ministers from the liberal parties resign like the Social Democrats before them. Worse still, the Christian Democrat-led Alliance for Germany quickly loses faith in its new de facto leader. The conservative German Social Union leaves, threatening to take a respectable chunk of voters with them.

With his government now short of a majority, Reichenbach calls an early election in 1992. He has no illusions about his chances of replicating de Maizière's success, but hopes to cobble together a working majority on the other side. The CDU, holding onto its alliance with the minor Democratic Awakening, takes a bruising, but remains the largest party with 33%. As expected, the DSU finds favour among conservatives, winning 10%. The biggest surprise, however, comes among the opposition - the primary beneficiary of the election is the Party of Democratic Socialism, successor of the former ruling communist party, which soars into second place on a wave of discontent and disillusion. The Social Democrats' hopes of winning voters from the unpopular CDU are dashed as they stay essentially level. The liberal and green alliances round out a parliament which appears just as inconclusive as the last.

The CDU, DSU, and Liberals together hold 198 seats, three seats short of a majority. The PDS, SDP, and Greens hold 202, but the latter two parties immediately rule out cooperation with the PDS. With the Greens also refusing to support the Christian democrats, there appears to be no workable government. However, the SDP begins to talk of compromise. While vanishingly few support a coalition with the CDU after the difficulty of the de Maizière government, many are open to a confidence agreement with a CDU-led minority government. The concept is far from uncontroversial, and it takes several weeks of heated argument within the party before a proposal is agreed upon. The People's Chamber sits to elect the Prime Minister, and Reichenbach wins with 197 votes in favour, 120 against, and 83 abstentions. Despite a small number of left-wing SDP deputies refusing to abstain, the agreement is hailed by both the CDU and SDP as the path to a stable government until the political climate cools down. Few could have predicted how it would set the stage for the years to come.

Now for one of the minor parties in Equestria. I think this is my favorite of the party logos I've done so far.

vNDelNg.png

The Nightmare Party is the most successful outwardly republican party in Equestria. Its main goal is to promote the theory that Nightmare Moon was the real persona of Princess Luna, and the present "reformed" Luna is the real corrupted version of Luna. Despite the persistent denial of these claims by Princess Luna herself, the Nightmare Party continues to defend the theory, dismissing Luna's claims as "exactly what a puppet of Celestia would want you to think." The reverence of Nightmare Moon includes calling for her return as well as an abolition of the monarchy and transforming Equestria into a "Lunar Republic" with Nightmare Moon at its head, an act they claim will result in greater freedoms and benevolent rule under the "uncorrupted" Luna. Despite records from the first Nightmare Rebellion, from Nightmare Moon's statements upon her return, and from information from expeditions into alternate presents where Nightmare Moon was victorious all pointing to Nightmare Moon refusing to give up hereditary power and leading a less free and more authoritarian government, the party continues to claim its theories.

Alongside the main republican position, the Nightmare Party is also the most prominent Precipitist party in parliament. Precipitism, as outlined in its defining work "The Benefits of Supply Side Weather Management" by economist Art Laughter, argues that because production and distribution of clouds and other manner of weather are limited by the horsepower of the pegasi employes in the weather industry, pegasi should have full control over weather management. According to Precipitists, weather demand driven by agricultural production or by the short term demand spikes from seasonal changeover is consumption only and has no bearing on the actual potential output of cloud and weather production. Therefore, it should not be taken into consideration when attempting to increase the efficiencies of weather management and a "top down" management approach led by pegasi is ideal, as increased production and distribution efficiencies will trickle down in the form of more rainfall increased overall precipitation availability. On its face a Precipitist management position may seem unconventional for an otherwise more liberal party to take, but it has helped the party attract a following among pegasi in the northern reaches of Equestria. The Nightmare Party has reached a height of three general ridings in just six years. Its leader Nachtmusik became the first elected MP from the party in the Hollow Shades riding shortly after the party's founding, and recently the party has seen significant growth in the northern Whinnyeg region with Solar Nadir of Whinnypeg-University and the newly elected Sanctuary Sky of the rural Flim Flam riding on the border with the Crystal Empire.
