Below is the first post in my new timeline Already Happened Somewhere Else, a timeline inspired by the claims of John Titor. It will likely not be posted in full on this site as much of the timeline blurs the boundaries between current politics and the politics of the 2000's enough I would be barred from placing it in After 1900 but would feel awkward placing it in Chat. Most further updates will be here.

The countdown to World War III in essence began with the 2000 election. The narrow triumph of George W. Bush in the electoral college despite a popular vote defeat was not an utterly unprecedented event by any means—it had happened 3 times before in fact. However, few could have expected what would ultimately follow from that. In hindsight, there were plenty of clues as to the long-term crisis building up in America. The 1990’s had seen rising threats from terrorism, increasing political polarization and interest in alternatives to the status quo of American politics. However, these were all just the warm-up to what would ultimately be a slow-motion catastrophe. For most of 2001, one almost certainly wouldn’t have seen the crises that would ensue on the horizon. Bush governed as a conservative, but as a ‘compassionate’ one. His flaws were not outside the norm of what the American people were used to and for the most part times were good for the bulk of the country. Sure, there were controversies and America had problems people noticed, but the first year of the new millennium did look like it would be an American century.

That illusion would die on the 11th of September of 2001. Terrorists affiliated with Al-Qaeda launched a massive attack on the United States. Four airplanes were hijacked by Al-Qaeda and flown into three targets—the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the White House. The attacks killed thousands of Americans and took down several icons of the United States. Even more horrific was who was among the dead—President Bush. In a cruel irony, Bush was not even meant to be in the White House at the time—he had been scheduled to visit Florida for several days when he was feeling somewhat ill and cancelled, intending to come later. Several members of the Bush administration were also killed. Vice President Dick Cheney was fortunate enough to survive and ascended to the presidency. Cheney vowed to ‘punish the cowards responsible’ and called on America to be prepared to wage a thorough War on Terror. Cheney began this war with an invasion of Afghanistan in retaliation for sheltering the 9/11 mastermind Osama Bin Laden. This war was near-universal in support and Cheney after launching it reached over 90% approval. That number would steeply drop off over the next few years.

Cheney’s invasion of Iraq was considerably more controversial owing to the dispute for its basis (Iraq was supporting Al-Qaeda). The invasion of Iraq was not supported by American allies as universally as the Afghanistan conflict was. But Cheney wasn’t content to stop there. From 2002 to 2004, Cheney would launch military interventions in Sudan, Somalia, Iran and Syria. Iran and Syria in particular began to devolve into quagmires almost from the get-go. Even in areas where US troops experienced some triumphs, insurgent groups resisting the American invasions continued to plague the US even after victory was declared. At home, Cheney’s popularity continued to decline as many began to oppose the wars overseas. In 2004, antiwar Democratic Senator Paul Wellstone won the presidential nomination. Meanwhile, enough of the center was skeptical of the war that Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson polled at nearly 10% in multiple polls. Cheney was facing a grueling campaign that ended with him staring defeat in the face as Wellstone cracked 290 votes. Cheney was forced to concede defeat and it looked like things might change. But then things went wrong.

It is not 100% clear how Wellstone’s plane crashed on that fateful Thanksgiving Day, just before the electoral college met. There were ample conspiracy theories of course—largely placing the blame at the feet of President Cheney. To this day, nearly 20% of America believes Cheney perpetrated either 9/11 or the Wellstone plane crash—1 in 10 think he was responsible for both. When the electoral college met, a constitutional crisis ensued. The Democratic Party officially urged the electors to vote Wellstone still so that his running mate John Edwards could assume the presidency, but on the day they met the electors scattered. Several voted for Wellstone/Edwards or Edwards and his chosen VP Dick Gephardt, but other voted for more unorthodox choices. Green nominee Matt Gonzalez, Senator Joe Lieberman, Governor Howard Dean, Representative Dennis Kucinich, former Governor Jesse Ventura and Illinois State Senator Barack Obama all got multiple electoral votes. As the Constitution specified, the election went to Congress. Despite the Democrats flipping Congress, all Cheney needed was control of 26 state delegations and the GOP had 27 state delegations. While the Democratic Senate confirmed Edwards, the attendance at Cheney’s first true Inauguration was dwarfed by protests against him.

Cheney’s second term would be marked by a period of intense domestic turmoil. From 2005 to 2008, riots in American cities, domestic terror attacks, mass shootings and political violence ran amok. It seemed as though one could not go a week without hearing about some mass political violence. The Cheney administration sought to crack down on this wave of violence via a variety of new pieces of legislation—the Homeland Security Act of 2007 being the most prominent. The HSA largely built upon the previous Patriot Act, but additionally included provisions for election delays in the event that they could not be held safely. Needless to say, this sparked widespread panic and Cheney was accused of seeking to make himself dictator by indefinitely suspending elections. The wave of violence following the legislation’s proposal ultimately got that provision amended so as not to apply to national elections, but authorized state governments to do so. Many claim Cheney blackmailed the ’21 Anti-Democratic Dems’ into voting for the legislation in the House, but evidence for this never emerged. Needless to say, its passage was intensely controversial. Even if Cheney did not forcibly imprison people for protesting him like many feared, the violence continued.

The violence was driven by a range of groups. The Cheney administration focused the most on ‘leftist agitators’—that is, members of left-wing political movements who often protested his administration. However, the bulk of the violence was perpetrated in ostensible retaliation for these ‘disloyal’ elements of American society by the far-right. This is not to say the far-left was wholly peaceful, but the events that claimed the lives of civilians tended to be driven by right-wingers angry at ‘liberal traitors’. Left-wing groups’ violence tended to consist primarily of riots and occasional bombing government or corporate buildings in acts more akin to the Weather Underground of old. Groups previously on the fringes of society were gaining momentum already when the Great Recession hit. At that point, it skyrocketed. Communist, socialist, fascist and theocratic groups surged in popularity in the leadup to the 2008 election. Of course, at this time, most people still preferred to settle their differences at the ballot box by voting for a candidate they supported. In the 2008 presidential election, former Florida Governor Jeb Bush lost to Representative Barbara Lee in what looked like a landslide. It seemed as though the times were about to change.

Inauguration Day looked like it would be an outstanding affair. There was immense attendance for the swearing in of the nation’s first African-American and first female president. Former presidents of the United States were in attendance, as was the leadership of Congress and much of the outgoing Cabinet. Lee was being sworn in by Justice John Roberts when it happened. A series of explosions consumed the area surrounding the US Capitol Building. It is estimated over 2,000 people were killed in this attack. While most attendees managed to survive, the casualties were catastrophic for the line of succession. Lee was dead, as was Vice President Rod Blagojevich, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and US Senate President Pro Tempore Daniel Inuoye. About three-quarters of Congress perished in the attack. Much of the outgoing cabinet was likewise killed. The presidency passed on to the designated survivor: Homeland Security Secretary and former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. Giuliani wasted no time in declaring that “The brutal assault upon our democracy must and shall be avenged.” Giuliani’s post-attack popularity rivaled Cheney’s after 9/11 and federal agents began trying to crackdown on domestic extremist groups, as Giuliani claimed the most likely perpetrators were a coalition of terrorists and domestic extremists. However, in March the truth would be revealed.

The Inauguration Day attacks had not been carried out by any domestic or foreign terrorist group. In fact, the attacks were organized by far-right elements of the US Armed Forces and intelligence community. This was revealed by a set of documents leaked by NSA contractor Edward Snowden via the Wikileaks organization. The Snowden disclosures immediately cast significant doubt on the legitimacy of the Giuliani administration owing to his claims that the attacks were carried out by other culprits. Even after Snowden leaked these documents, Giuliani denounced them as fake. March was consumed by protests, riots and even more domestic terrorism. Many state governors demanded an investigation. Three claimed Giuliani was likely in on it. Giuliani did continue to have defenders from the most right-wing elements of American society. On March 30th, things would drastically escalate. A new round of attacks on Congress’ emergency meeting place at Mount Weather killed most of Congress. Giuliani unilaterally began ordering mass detentions and making appointments (including putting some people identified as in on the plot in positions in his administration).

By the end of the first week of April, it was clear what was coming. Several state governments had declared they demanded new elections be held immediately while the three more radical ones outright rejected the legitimacy of the federal government altogether. Left-wing militant groups were mobilizing as were their more right-wing counterparts. Even some more moderate types began forming armed groups in the name of countering extremist governments. Giuliani attempted to further crack down (for instance, arresting Virginia Governor Tim Kaine for sedition), but increasingly struggled to implement control beyond Washington. The next few months saw national control more or less unravel completely. the end, three broad factions were established, joined by a myriad of smaller petty factions. In the immediate beginning of the Second American Civil War, there was not active ongoing fighting everywhere at once. Militant groups began seizing territory, Alaska’s government officially seceded from the Union and Texas’ government was overthrown by secessionists. Several state governments were completely wiped out by insurgent groups. But as summer dawned in 2009, it was clear things were going to be brutal. As soldiers deployed in dozens of countries returned home and either rallied behind Giuliani’s government or snuck off to join whichever groups they felt were more justified, it was abundantly clear that the United States was united no more. Across the world, the economy tumbled and rival powers began preparing to assert themselves as the opening shots were fired between various factions.

Alger Hiss being president twice is beyond cursed.
Can't Miss the Hiss

This would make an awesome TL.
Yeah, i need to know how New Dealism became a fully authoritarian ideology.
It's based on a president list by Cevolian, but if I got his blessing I could spin it into a full timeline. I also might make a masterpost with some background.

I like the story, but the box is kind of... ugly. I made a cleaner version:

I had some logo's laying around from an other project, so I decided to make some wikiboxes.

So the main POD is that instead of establishing a rival soccer league in the Midwest, Ferdinand Weiszmann decides to follow the advice of the ASL and establishes a Midwestern division of the league. This division includes cities like St Louis, Chicago and Detroit which had a substantial soccer tradition.

Pittsburgh Steel SC is an American professional soccer team based in Pittsburgh, Penslyvania. The club plays in the Western Conference of the American Soccer League, the top tier of the American soccer pyramid. The team was founded in 1947, when Peter Strasser moved Morgan Strasser F.C to Pittsburgh to compete in the new Midwestern Division of the American Soccer League as Pittsburgh Strasser. During the 1948-49 season the team became known as the Pittsburgh Indians before eventually changing to their current name in 1961. Since 2013, the Steelers play their home games at the 20,000-seat Highmark Stadium, a soccer-specific stadium located in Station Square.

Soccer Club Los Angeles, Commonly referred to as SCLA, are an American professional soccer club based in Los Angeles, California, that competes in the American Soccer League (ASL) as a member of the Western Conference. The team was founded in 1951 as the Los Angeles Kickers as a predominantly German immigrant team. Within a few seasons, it shed its German identity and took it's current name. During the mid 50's the team became a local power house and even won the 1958 US open Cup against professional teams from the east. It was one of the first team on the West Coast that joined the ASL during the 1960 season.

Alternate Olympic host cities. No real lore just that the games are evenly distributed among the continents and follow this order: Europe, America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. The only breaks to this rule are the games that were cancelled (they were just postponed to the next edition) and Athens, 1996, because of the centennial of the Olympics
EDIT: Instead of Lebanon it should be Beirut.

Based on a an obscure movie called Timequest, which is about a time traveler who warns JFK, Jackie and even RFK about the assassinations in Dallas and in Los Angeles.
View attachment 586720
Why would he be assassinated when he is already retired? Also, given his numerous health problems, how can he live to the age of 97?
