Melanie Sanchez is an American politician and activist who represents District 4 on the Oakland City Council, a position she has held since January of 2079. She is a member of the Green Party, and was elected with 61.2% of the vote in her district, unseating Jane Ramirez, the Democratic incumbent.

Melanie Sanchez is a veteran of World War III. She enlisted in the California Army National Guard in August of 2071 at age 19, several weeks before she was due to start her sophomore year of college. She underwent and completed basic training at Fort Ord (one of the last training companies to complete the full pre-War basic training before it was shortened for manpower reasons), where she also underwent an abbreviated version of Military Police School. She was assigned to the 49th Military Police Brigade, which conducted several months of training before being declared combat ready.

Sanchez’s battalion was attached to the 223rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which shipped to Okinawa several weeks after the successful completion of the Relief of the island. The 223rd spent several months on the island during the buildup for the assault of Hong Kong. The Battle of Hong Kong ground on for several years and bled into the immediately following Battle of Shenzen. Sanchez’ four-year enlistment was extended “for the duration” in August of 2075.

In November of 2075, still in Shenzen, Sanchez was wounded in action when her vehicle was hit with an anti-vehicle rocket. In addition to shrapnel wounds, Sanchez’ right arm was traumatically amputated. She spent several months recovering, first in a combat support hospital in Hong Kong, briefly on Okinawa, and then chiefly at Fort Ord’s hospital. She was medically discharged in March of 2076, three months before the June ceasefire that ended major combat operations in China.

Following her discharge, Sanchez returned to Oakland, and became involved in politics as an activist with the Green Party, championing the party’s environmental causes and policy initiatives for an economically depressed and environmentally degraded Bay Area. Sanchez also became involved with veterans’ issues and causes, particularly with the hundreds of thousands of veterans returning home to the Bay and many thousands more who gravitated to the area in the aftermath of demobilization. Sanchez, as a wounded veteran herself, became particularly involved with wounded veterans, a very high percentage of which were “rebuilds,” so-called due to the prevalence of cybernetic prosthetics. Rebuilds, particularly those with visible cybernetics, faced varying degrees of discrimination and marginalization from certain segments of society. Sanchez was also a noted anti-radicalization activist in the veteran community, as many returning veterans gravitated to extreme far-right and far-left politics in the aftermath of the War, in particular paramilitary street groups.

Sanchez was chosen as the Green Party’s candidate for District 4 in the 2078 Oakland City Council elections, launching her campaign with an event atop the city’s sea-wall, nicknamed the Great Overreaction, pledging to revitalize and expand the wall’s green spaces. In addition to advocating for the party’s platform with a focus on urban regreening, conservation and protection of local wildlife and wetland habitats, and combatting pollution of the Bay’s waters, Sanchez campaigned on veterans’ issues, anti-radicalization, and pledged to fight police corruption with a particular emphasis on far-right paramilitary sympathy and infiltration of local police organizations.

This made her a target for the same groups, and her Oakland Police Department protection detail was pulled and replaced with an Alameda County Sheriff’s Department detail when the former agency was accused of being “either unwilling or unable” to combat the militant influence in its ranks. The Sheriff’s detail was pulled and replaced (in the wake of similar accusations) when a large detachment of the National Police Force was dispatched to the Bay Area by the federal government to help stabilize the turbulent region.

Beautiful.

Has Melanie at any point considered running for a Congressional seat?
Thank you!

Not as of yet - she's one of the POV characters in a cyberpunk story I'm currently working on but haven't started posting yet and probably won't for a while. She has a very, very, very brief cameo at the end of my entry for the cyberpunk writing challenge, the link to which is in my sig.
How big is the seawall if it has significant green spaces to be protected and revitalized?
fucking huge, thank you, sir

More seriously, there's just a bunch of like trees and bushes and patches of grass and walking paths up on top that the City has let go without proper care, so she's pretty much promising better park maintenance.

1916 Dixie Attorney General Election
The 12th Amendment to the Dixie Constitution, passed in 1914 and a key Populist Party goal, changed the way that the President and Vice President were elected to a popular vote with 2 rounds and is still in effect today. But, the 14th Amendment also moved the Attorney General to Direct Popular Vote as well. In 1916, as most Populists were getting swept out of Congress and Democrats won the presidency and the vice presidency in the first nationwide popular vote held in Dixie, Senator Marion Butler of North Carolina narrowly won a six year term as the first directly elected Attorney General in the country.

Butler, now being the only Populist in power, Butler was left with little to no allies in Richmond. Butler would try to prosecute many of those that performed lynchings, but would quickly abandon his attempts early in his term after opposition from Congress and the executive. The friction between Butler and Wilson would heat up considerably. Butler throughout his term opened several investigations into Wilson administration officials; most notably in the State-Army Investigation, where many State and Army Dept. officials were investigated for an alleged embezzlement conspiracy. However, nothing ever came of the investigations and no indictments were made of Wilson Admin officials. In a few years, the President and Congress were completely over the Justice Department being completely independent of Congress and the Executive that, in 1920, they passed the 15th Amendment, which returned the Attorney General to appointment under the President. Butler would continue through his full term until his position was returned to the executive, and has remained the first and only elected Attorney General in the country's history.

The 2058 Illinois gubernatorial election took place on November 12, 2058. Incumbent Democratic Governor Zayden Waller ran for re-election to a third term in office, and was challenged by Republican nominee Kurtis Seele and prominent anti-poverty activist Howard Luis Garcia, who ran under the Commonwealth ticket.

I just appreciate the attention to detail. Are you planning on doing more infoboxes/maps/whatever for the setting?

With particular thanks to @Whiteshore for helping out with the description.

Cherie Laura Wayland (born May 17, 2014) is an American tech and aerospace mining entrepreneur and politician, currently serving as the senior United States Senator for Florida since 2051. A member of the Democratic Party, Wayland previously represented Florida's 4th congressional district, a Hispanic-majority Orlando-based district that has voted Republican since the 2048 presidential election, from 2047 to 2051. Born to Alexander Wayland, owner of the electronics manufacturing company Wayland Tech, and aspiring singer Stephanie Baume, Cherie grew up in Miami in a firmly middle-class household. Although Cherie's parents' relationship was considerably strained, both Alexander and Stephanie exerted a great deal of influence on their daughter, with Alexander teaching her to "keep a business going" and Stephanie giving Cherie a deep love for space (as well as expressing her wish to be "launched into the cosmos" upon her death, which Cherie would fulfill in 2055).

Graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2036 and from Harvard University in 2039, Cherie succeeded her father as CEO of Wayland Tech and went on to significantly expand her company's wealth, entering the aerospace industry and becoming one of the earliest asteroid mining tycoons. With a net worth of nearly $1.2 trillion, Wayland is the wealthiest person to have ever served in the United States Congress and is currently among the richest people on the planet.

Cherie Wayland is overwhelmingly popular in her home state of Florida due to being one of the few major businesspeople to not move her assets to a more climate-secure state following the Great Flooding, and has consistently won her congressional races by enormous margins, having attracted bipartisan appeal. Her philanthropic activities have also helped in this regard, with Republican Governor Matteo Busigo notably praising Wayland Tech in 2058 for their donations to Floridian local governments, small business, and initiatives as part of the Wayland Foundation; as such, most statewide polls give Wayland extremely positive approval ratings, rarely going lower than 75%.

Wayland is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has described herself as a "democratic socialist"; this has been a point of contention due to Wayland's status as a trillionaire and her stalwart opposition to bills limiting corporate freedom and regulating asteroid mining, and Wayland has earned particular ire from fellow southern Democrats due to her support for strict gun laws. In April 2059, Cherie Wayland announced her campaign for the 2060 Democratic nomination for President of the United States; officially, she supports an ordoliberal economic policy to deal with America's infrastructure decay, reduced international role and loss of land to the deep blue sea, greater international cooperation with major powers such as China and Russia, and a strong focus on development of space technology and biotech. While Wayland has emerged as one of the strongest candidates in the primary race, her campaign has been slightly tainted by allegations of "paranoia" and poor treatment of campaign staff, among other things.

Cherie Wayland married Portland-born lawyer and Democratic Party volunteer James Foster in 2039, having met him in MIT; they have had three children together, Marcella (b. 2040), Veronica (b. 2042) and Peter (b. 2044). James Foster was murdered in 2054 by a group of disgruntled ex-Wayland Tech employees, and Cherie hasn't remarried since. Her personal life has been a point of controversy and rumours as well, with her friendship with a Russian diplomat, Tamara Kozlova, being arguably the biggest source of conspiracy theories.

Republic of Poland in Exile (pol. Rzeczpospolita Polska na uchodźstwie), officially known as Republic of Poland (pol. Rzeczpospolita Polska), also called Second Polish Republic (pol. II Rzeczpospolita) was state estabilished in area of Polish occupation zone in 1949.

In May 1945, when Polish 1st Armoured Division captured area of Haren, 60,000 Polish soldiers and inmates present in the area were settled in newly established occupational zone. German population of Haren was replaced with 5,000 Poles, and town itself was renamed Maczków (after general Stanisław Maczek). Other towns were renamed after victorious battles from polish history (Grunwald, Cedynia) or simply after towns and villages in Poland (Wilno).

When relations between Western and Soviet bloc deteriorated in late 1940s, Britain withdrew her recognition to Soviet puppet government in Warsaw and again recognised London government, which has already established itself in its military enclave. On 24 May 1949, shortly after Federal Republic of Germany (also known as West Germany) was formed, government in Maczków proclaimed itself a legitimate government of Poland and a "State-in-exile".

State was reannexed into West Germany after Soviet detente with the West and many of former German inhabitants returned into their towns, and a lot of Poles returned to their homeland east of Iron Curtain. Today area of former Republic-in-exile is main center of Polish minority in Germany.

Throughout existence of Polish state in exile, many Polish soldiers, emigrees and even Poles living under communist regime moved in, forming 200 thousands strong Polish community in country of 325 thousands inhabitants.
