It started out as a meme. Randos on the internet, instead of funnelling donations to clean up what was literally a solid mass of plastic waste the size of Texas off the coast of California, kept joking how it'd gain statehood before Puerto Rico. They were still laughing when some quirky trust-fund rich kid flew out there, planted a flag and posted a selfie on wt.social. They kept on laughing when that very same rich kid started lobbying congress for building permits. They dammed nearly pissed themselves when it went to a quorum vote. Nowadays if you ask Zoomers about it they'll still chuckle at how it's being used as a buffer against possible air invasion from China.

>> Governor: Gideon Trump (D)

Was this the rich kid in question?

Regardless, that is somewhat (if eerily) believable. BTW, David Brin's Earth had a similar island, though it was independent and was somewhat mobile.

By the dying light of the 1990s as the United Internet of Things entered a new age. Threats overseas from Chinese cyber attacks increasingly emphasized the necessity for an upgraded firewall. Frequent Arguments with "The Internets" Minority frustrated Administrator Bill Gate's plans for near universal internet access within the UIT. A Large fear at the time was a bug that would occur in computer programs on January 1st, 2000, with it being known as the Y2K Crisis. The Y2K Crisis saw increased violence throughout the country, though it was often blamed on the incumbent administration of Gate.

The Lower House Network of Internet Providers had a shocking upset in the previous 1997 Election, with "The Internets" Newt Gingrich being apt to seize the lower house by a margin of 20 seats. With it's only position of power besides a few rotting dot governors within the southern UIT, a big gamble was made in the impeachment of Administrator Bill Gates in 1999. One Count of Virus with Malicious Intent for the United Internet and One Count of Trolling a Senator online.

As the Trial got underway, Bill Gates was able to skillfully defend himself with the ample time given to him while witnesses were called in via fax machine. Gates questioned the legitimacy of the Impeachment hearings, noting that "The Internets" still lacked a large control over the Senate Sites that would ultimately judge him. The Network of Internet Providers passed both counts by margins of 70 to 62 and 68 to 64 respectively.

As the Senate Trial got underway as Administrator Bill Gates was called to Testify on the Senate Site Impeachment Investigation For Bill Gates.com website. After days of exhaustive texts via several members back and forth, many capital letters, improper grammar and numerous insults and more trolling, it was sent to the Full Senate Site.

The vote in the Senate Site required 26 senators in the affirmative. "The Internets" largely lacked these numbers, with little in the way of cross votes from the dominant Democratic Information Front and the smaller aligned parties. By the time it had come to the last vote, only 14 senators (all "The Internets" plus a single defector from the You've Got Mail party) voted for his impeachment. Now justified in the actions that it had been all a waste of time, "The Internets" looked like a party on the ropes.

The Administrator Election next year was one with the websites having full memories of the botched and completely partisan effort by "The Internets" to toss out the democratically elected Administrator. After numerous online ballots failing to make a decent nominee for "The Internets" party, a hacking attack by George W. Bush changed all the primary votes for him.

The every man website was infuriated at the betrayal, and so opted to completely walk away from "The Internets" in disgust. By this time Bush attempted some form of damage control, hammering Gates for "not being removed like the criminal he was". Gates would hammer back that "The impeachment was a "The Internets" Ploy to ruin the nation" or something along those lines.

By the time of the debates, Bush would propose "Staunchly Conservative" ideals, such as immediate deletion for any illegal data and folders that entered the nation's broadband cables without an Internet Identity Pamphlet. He also argued to crack down on illegal manufacturing of the pamphlets while wanting to promote the sale of firearms throughout legal means such as via Government Guns dot com. Gates returned fire with "Internet Liberalization" wanting to enable more data to enter the UIT. He agreed with bush that the IIP was a good idea, though he wanted the restrictions already in place to be weakened.

Come the UIT's Independence Day and Election for both the Senate Sites and the Administator, The Democratic Information Front utilized the unfair impeachment on "The Internets". In the Electrical College, Bush only managed to win his home state of Texas. The Senate was an intriguing story. Several DIT pickups were made in Georgia, Kentucky and a sweep throughout the once solid "The Internets" territory in the southwest.

A more surprising tale was how Al Gore lost both Senate Seats of Tennessee to "The Internets" while also picking up both Georgian and Arizonan seats. With the loss of the Senate Administrator, A snap election within the Democratic Information Front was held for a new Senate Administrator, which came in the form of easy to win Site of Utah from the elder Orrin Hatch.

STEPHEN IN OTHER UNIVERSES
Part 1 of 3

Stephen the Actor

Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants IOTL, was once in a play in high school, suggesting he was once a thespian. And he did grow up in southern California, so what if he had decided to pursue a career in Hollywood instead of in animation?:

Stephen the Alternate History Writer

Essentially, Stephen becomes one of us:

Stephen the Architect

Maybe instead of animation, Stephen develops an interest in architecture, as it is a way for him to utilize his artistic talents, and he ends up designing nautical-themed buildings for construction projects in coastal cities all around the world:

Stephen the Astronaut

Inspired by his father working as a draftsman for NASA (OTL!), and after getting to meet Neil Armstrong at a young an impressionable age (the POD), Stephen aims for the stars (and lands on the moon thanks to some butterflies):

Stephen the Billionaire

Or perhaps his upbringing’s proximity to NASA leads to him connecting more to Florida, and, beginning in the late 1980s, Stephen finds much fortune there as more people move to the state needing housing, culminating in him expanding his interests and becoming the Elon Musk of the marine exploration community:

Oh boy, look at what I'm making...

Is it a whole alternate Wikipedia article?
Yes.

It it going to be in the tens of thousands of words?
Yes.

Have I lost my mind?
Yes.

Nope. Given that (despite it releasing in 1997) its hardware is the same as the OTL PSX, it would be unable to run those games. Too slow processing, too little memory, Fs in chat
Was it in response to a wikibox, because I don't remember seeing any video game-related ones here lately.
