For decades, the Frontier and Hinterworlds accepted the continued colonization, economic exploitation, and gunboat diplomacy of the Core and Periphery, often encouraging it for the wealth it brought to them, but the stagnant subsistence economies of the Hinterworlds were continually indebted to the richer great powers, importing products from construction equipment to weather satellites to fabric softener. But with '97, the accepted understandings were broken; the cause of the disaster- the crash of a United States warship- and the lackluster response to it from core worlds, led to the rise of new movements in the Hinterworlds, including, famously, Colonel Flint Danger's speech before the Cantwallan Witenagamot.

The most widespread and popular of the post-Impact ideologies is forest liberalism. As with most modern ideologies, it is the child of many fathers- American federalism, British splendid isolationism, Lamplighter politics, Greens, import-replacement theory. At its core is a combination of self-sufficiency and carefully balanced trade. The average forest liberal doesn't want much- a horse, a dog, a rifle, a family, and the ability to live off the produce and trade of their labors, be it on the land, as a hired laborer, or in the cities, and to be a respectable citizen- to pay taxes on what she owns and earns appropriate to productivity, to have a say in his local assembly, to read her local newspaper, to pray to whichever gods he feels are best suited to his particular problems- in short, only to freely possess life, liberty, property, and the chase of happiness. Rather than relying on outside products, the forest liberal ideal is to choose one's luxuries- to buy and trade with people and businesses on the same planet, to build local economic networks, to develop trade and create products for themselves and innovate.

While many of the counties on Frontier and Hinterworlds remain economically and culturally linked to the Core and Periphery for much of their trade (to say nothing of the worlds colonized or conquered by Core powers like the CAP or Machiequa), growing associations of Hinterworld counties dedicated to improving their internal economies and separating themselves from the Core politically are a major new force in interstellar politics, and unions of such worlds can wield considerably more power than they can alone.

The events on Hawthorn involved the deaths of millions on one of the largest of the Hinterworlds, and virtually destroyed multiple counties. The changes wrought by it, including the Hawthorn Realignment and the Vinegar Incident resulted in a sea change in policy by both hinterworlds and great powers, with an impact that resonates to this day.

I notice a lack of anything even resembling leftism, and a lot of weird ancap-y vibes, from these ideologies. I want to know more about this universe and how things came to be as they are.

So before I learnt how to use sandbox on Wikipedia back in 2015, I used to make Wikiboxes on Excel (talk about dedication) usually just for myself more than anything. I came across them on my Mac the other day, so here was the latest box from a TL where the Tories split in the early 2000s and the Lib Dems replaced them as one of Britain's two main parties (Sam Gyimah also renamed himself Adam Davis and was a Lib Dem instead of a Tory as well, by the looks of it, I can't really remember my thought process with this).

And here is the revamped box actually made on Wikipedia.

I assure you they may be many things, but they are not anarchists. They believe in government- albeit local government, with only as much association with others as necessary to prevent people interfering in their local government. An inherently reactionary, largely rural-based ideology isn't going to look very leftist, for fairly obvious reasons. In practice, the individual counties have their own governments, and some of them look a little more like modern liberal social democracies, others look more like conservative constitutional monarchies, others like collective democratic socialists, anything you could imagine- there's a lot of them.

As for the second point, there will be more coming, so stay tuned. :)

The Sumxu, also known as the Chinese Fold, is a landrace breed of domestic cat. It is best known for its distinctive "folded" ears.

Etymology
Historically, the cat was known by many different names, including Chinese lop-eared cat, drop-eared cat, droop-eared cat, and hanging-ear cat. The name Sumxu comes from an old transliteration of songshu (Chinese: 松鼠), meaning "squirrel" or literally "pine rat". Sumxu was originally applied to a different animal, the yellow-throated marten, but a series of mistranslations led Western authors to conflate the two unfamiliar animals. By the time the mistake was discovered, the name sumxu had become commonplace.

Chinese Fold was devised in Britain during the standardization of the breed as a more marketable name, highlighting its distinctive ears. After the re-development of breed, Sumxu once more became the name favoured by breeders, in order to distance the cat from its recent history and emphasize instead its long history, exotic nature and mystique.

History
The Sumxu is a landrace variety of cat that has been present in China for centuries. It was first reported in Western sources by Michael Boym, a Jesuit missionary to southern China, in his illustrated book Flora Sinensis (1656). Boym noted that a "white lop-eared cat" was reputed to exist in the northern parts of the country, but had not seen one himself and did not illustrate one. Another Jesuit missionary, Martino Martini, was the first to sight the cats, describing a variety of white, long-haired and long-eared cats in the northern regions near Peking. From then on, sumxu cats were intermittently mentioned by travellers and naturalists.

The unusual qualities of the cat made it a curiosity for Europeans, especially as reports were intermittent and often hearsay, adding to the mystique. In 1777, French naturalist Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, after consulting many accounts from other naturalists, argued that the "lop-eared cat" was not a cat at all, but rather the cat-like marten, and that the descriptions and name sumxu owed to a series of accidental conflations. His argument was widely, but not universally, believed, and the sumxu fell out of public consciousness.

Interest in the lop-eared cat was reignited in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as cat fanciers were looking for new and exotic breeds to import. Though considered a longshot, British and Continental car shows offered prizes for a drop-eared Chinese cat, and inquiries were made with Chinese embassies. One was finally located and exhibited in 1906, and caused a rush of excitement. Over the next few years, more cats were imported to the UK and together formed a breeding pool for the entire breed in the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Over time, the breed was standardized and marketed as the "Chinese Fold".

In 1971, the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GGCF) and Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe), the premier cat registries in the UK and Europe respectively, withdrew registrations of the Chinese Fold. This was due to the crippling deformity of the limbs and tail in some cats, and concerns over genetic difficulties and ear problems such as infections, mites and deafness. The Folds quickly declined in Europe, but as they had been exported to the United States, the breed was reestablished with safer breeding programs and under its old name of Sumxu.

The modern Sumxu has been crossed with other breeds (such as American Shorthair and Siamese) to provide a better stock and reduce genetic issues.

Appearance
Sumxus are medium-large cats, with males typically reaching 10–14 lbs and females 7–10 lbs. They are broadly built and noted for their above-average strength.

Their coats can be either long- or short-haired, although short is more common. In both cases, the hairs are fine and close to the body, with a glossy look and a silky texture.

Sumxus are most noted for their unique and peculiar ears, which appear "folded" down. This is caused by a dominant-gene mutation that affects the rigidity of cartilage throughout the body, causing the ears to bend under their weight, forward and down towards the front of the head. The cat's appearance has been likened to squirrels and martens. Nevertheless, not all Sumxus develop folded ears; those that do not are nicknamed "straights."

Early reports of the cat described it as having two main colourations, black and cream, and occasionally "the usual colouring of the common house-cat." Only the cream variant survives today.

It is a common misconception that Sumxus are related to the Scottish Fold. In reality, the two breeds independently developed similar mutations; the Scottish Fold's name is simply a reference to the older breed.

Temperament
Sumxus are a popular breed in large part to their affectionate nature, forming strong bonds with their owners and gravitating towards human activity. They desire frequent moments of physical affection, such as being held and petted, and often follow their owners from room to room while vocalizing until the owner settles down. For these reasons, Sumxu behaviour has been described as "dog-like", with their "greater dependence on human contacts" noted in contrast to the mere "tolerant acceptance of human company" that many other breeds display.

Otherwise, Sumxus are quite relaxed, carefree and easygoing. They do not require (or desire) much physical activity and are generally unaggressive towards fellow animals. However, despite their languid nature, they can be effective mousers owing to their bulk and strength.

Health
The typical lifespan of a Sumxu is 15 years.

The Sumxu's hanging ears are caused by an incompletely dominant gene that affects the cartilage of the ears, causing the ear to bend under its own weight. A cat with folded ears may have either one (heterozygous) or two (homozygous) of the fold gene; a "straight" Sumxu has two copies of the normal gene instead.

The fold gene is linked to osteochondrodysplasia (OCD), a developmental abnormality that affects cartilage and bone development throughout the body. Homozygous folds are affected by malformed bone structures and developed severe and painful degenerative joint diseases at an early age. This can also affect heterozygous folds, but typically to a lesser extent and at a later age; some are even asymptomatic.

For this reason, ethical breeding programs are strictly Fold/Straight pairings. Some researchers recommend abandoning the breeding of folded cats entirely and re-establishing the Sumxu with normal ears. For this reason, GCCF and FIFe rejected registration of the breed and continue to do so.

Historically, Sumxu's ears susceptible to infection and mites, although careful breeding since the concerns were raised has virtually eliminated the problem. The nature of their ears still result in a greater wax buildup, however.

Since it came up last time that some have trouble fully appreciating these animal boxes because they can't tell what has been changed or not, feel free to ask questions.

Social media is incredibly important in the modern day, allowing the rich and powerful to directly share their thoughts and experiences with the rest of the world. The more prominent social media sites include Shouter, InTouch and Fotobuzz, with the most popular being Shouter due to its simplicity. The more prominent and famous users have more than one hundred million followers and their posts can have hundreds of thousands of likes, shares and comments. In particular, mid-level royals and nobles use social media to become "influencers". Inane posts and videos about their extravagent yet mundane lives are very popular, and they make money by posting sponsored content. However, social media does have a downside as it has a certain toxic atmosphere attached to it, and some countries have managed to weaponize social media in their fight against dissent.

King-Emperor John II of the British Empire is one of the most popular profiles on social media. His Shouter account has more than 150 million followers, and 7 of the 10 most liked posts in the website's history are his. Accounts for reigning monarchs like him are more official than those operated by lower-level royals. For example, John II would never make a post about diet supplements, while his cousin, Archduchess Matilda of Gloucester, can make posts about dietary supplements and swimsuits. Some members of the Royal Family, such as the Princess of Wales, prefer to have their household run their social media accounts.

I like it, Mike.

But my small-r republican sensibilities are crying out in terror at how many of these shouts are made by royal types

Especially this John II character, seems shifty

I'm assuming the Duchess of Cornwall is making a killing by plugging flat-tummy tea.

Please tell me there's a royal that is the "Queen of Weird Shouter". That's the only thing that'll make up for John II being popular

Also "Street Pressure Challenge" is what I call protesting now

This is some really clever parallelism, because just comparing/contrasting these shouts with their tweet equivalents (and users) tells a story just by itself. Fun idea, great execution.

Does somebody know how to make the Wikipedia-style US Presidential Maps of the electoral college? I mean, I could probably modify it using photoshop, but If there is another way, I'll be glad to know.
Thanks in advance!

It was the first World Cup at which the video assistant referee (VAR) system was used, as well as the first to see all four British Home Nations qualify.

Actually it would be the second time all the Home Nations made it, the other time bring Sweden '58.
