This scenario follows a world where Engelbert Dollfuss survives the 1934 assassination attempt.

——————

The Austro-German War took place from May 6, 1936 to June 22, 1938. The war was sparked over Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss's refusal to accept German Chancellor Adolf Hitler's demands for Austria's incorporation into the Third Reich. Prior to the war, Dollfuss built up the Austrian military, instituting a peacetime draft and developing the nation's tanks, fighter planes, and other such vehicles. In addition, Dollfuss, who practiced what is known as Austrofascism, formed a military pact with fascist leader of Italy Benito Mussolini, who himself was wary of Hitler.

On the morning of May 6th, the German Wehrmacht invaded Austria from Bavaria, while the Luftwaffe simultaneously began its campaign geared towards taking out important military targets. The strategy, now known as a blitzkrieg, was deemed a success; Austrian and Italian forces suffered massively. The German military moved fast in capturing eastern Austria and forcing the Austrian government to order troops to retreat back to Vienna. The Battle of Vienna, which mainly took place outside city limits, was won by Germany on April 17, 1937 after three weeks of fighting. As a result, Dollfuss and his military commanders fled south, with the Austrian military making its last stand at the Battle of Graz on June 8th. Dollfuss attempted to flee to Italy but was caught en route by German forces and imprisoned for being "a traitor to the German people."

Mussolini, who had already begun ordering massive withdrawals of troops from Austria following the Battle of Vienna, ordered soldiers to stand their ground at the border and other areas in the north. However, Germany once again launched the blitzkrieg strategy on July 2nd, crushing border defenses and beginning to slowly but steadily move south. Events like the Battles of Milan, Florence, and Ravenna featured combined Italian military and guerrilla forces that were able to stall the German advances, but eventually, the Wehrmacht was able to continue its trek. The Battle of Rome (June 1 - June 13) resulted in the defeat of the Italian military and Austrian volunteer forces, effectively ending the war. The Treaty of Zurich, signed on June 22nd by Germany and the Nazi-installed Austrian and Italian governments, officially ended the two-year-old conflict. As a result of the Treaty, Germany would annex Austria, South Tyrol, Trieste, and other areas of northern Italy. In addition, the nation would militarily occupy the rest of northern Italy for at least five years. The Nazi puppet government known as the State of Italy was also formed in southern Italy and was led by General Ugo Cavallero, who was more friendly towards the Germans than Mussolini and other Italian leaders.

My guess is that Mussolini ITTL would thus be perceived as one of the few that would try (though ultimately fail) to hold back the Nazi tide.

Been on a WWI/WWII binge lately, so here's some "X-in-Canada" infoboxes regarding that dark period in human history.

-------------------------------------------------

The 1917 Canadian federal election was the 13th federal election held in Canada. It was held on December 17, 1917 to elect all 623 members of the House of Commons. The election had previously been required to have been called in 1916, but owing to the entrance of the country into the First World War in 1914, the Conservative government of Sir Robert Borden had postponed the election, largely in hopes that it could form a national government coalition, as had happened in the United Kingdom upon the declaration of war.

The Liberals, led by former prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, had refused, largely over the issue of conscription, which had been broached with increasing frequency as Canadian casualties continued to mount and enlistments were not high enough to replace them. Conscription was greatly unpopular among both Francophones and Germanophones, and Laurier feared that a national government would impose conscription and result in those two groups and the provinces they dominated (Quebec, Dakota, Wisconsin and Minnesota) would consider leaving Canada.

But the prime minister was already working to ensure that he could push conscription through. In September 1917, the government passed the Wartime Elections Act, which disenfranchised conscientious objectors and those born in "enemy countries" (Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, etc.) and who had arrived in Canada after 1902, while simultaneously enfranchising female relatives of servicemen. Passed alongside it was the Military Voters Act, which enfranchised all Canadian soldiers. The act furthermore gave those new soldiers, most of whom in Europe, the option to vote for either the government or opposition party, not individual candidates. Furthermore, it allowed soldiers to either specify which riding their vote should be counted in, or allow their party to do so. These acts, which worked to skew the electorate in favor of conscription and guided pro-conscription military voters to cast their vote for the government in marginal ridings, would give the government a huge advantage in any election held while the war was still being fought.

Following the passage of the Wartime Elections and Military Voters Acts, Borden convinced several Liberals to cross the floor, whereupon he formed the Unionist government, giving some Liberals cabinet ministries and called for new elections to give his government a mandate to impose conscription. The Liberals would be split by the decision to form a national government, but the majority of the party stayed with Laurier, and the faction that served as the opposition became known as the Laurier Liberals.

The election campaign has been frequently described as one of the nastiest in Canadian history. Emotions over conscription and the war were high, and the wildly divergent views of the war between Anglophones and non-Anglophones resulted in many public confrontations in mixed-language ridings.

FN4oTgh.png

To no one's surprise, the blatantly undemocratic changes to the electoral laws, combined with linguistic and ethnic polarization sending Anglophones overwhelmingly into the government camp resulted in a massive Unionist majority. With Unionist Liberals joining his ticket, Borden led the government to win 57% of the popular vote and 73% of the seats, records that have not been broken in the 29 subsequent federal elections since 1917. Only in three provinces (Dakota, Prince Edward Island and Quebec) did the government not win a majority of votes and only one of those (Quebec) saw the Laurier Liberals win a majority of seats. Due to the Wartime Elections Act, this was the first election in which some women were eligible to vote in every province of Canada.

Flush with a large mandate, Borden's government began to enforce the Military Service Act on January 1, 1918. The unpopularity of conscription soon became apparent, when the overwhelming majority of men made eligible for conscription under the act sought deferments. Eventually, the tension in the French-Canadian community boiled over into riots in Quebec City during Easter, which resulted in 150 casualties. The government's modification of the act to reduce exemptions soon made the act unpopular among English-speaking Canadians as well, although the war's end in November prevented the unpopularity of conscription from becoming insurmountable for the government. After all of this, the Military Service Act sent about 50,000 Canadian conscripts to the front.

The election would have long-lasting political effects, including widening the rift between Quebec and English-speaking Canada and resulting in the Conservatives (and their Progressive Conservative successors) virtually shut out of Quebec until the 1980s (with the exception of the 1958 federal election), and aiding the radicalization of many western farmers (many of whom were of German or eastern European stock) that would result in left-wing parties like the Progressives gaining prominence in the early to mid-1920s. It was also the last election for both Laurier and Borden, the former dying in 1919 and the latter retiring in 1920, succeeded by Irvine Lenroot.

Richard Harrow (played by Jack Huston) is a fictional character in HBO's Boardwalk Empire series. Before the events of the series, Harrow served as a marksman in for the Canadian Expeditionary Force and was grievously wounded, losing an eye, upper jaw, and cheekbone on the left side of his face, as well as suffering throat damage that causes him to speak with a low, gurgling voice. He also wears a tin mask molded to look like the left side of his face while in public. His experiences in the war and disfiguring injury have left him deeply traumatized and alienated from society. After recuperating from his injuries in his Wisconsin home, Harrow leaves to the American city of Chicago, where he meets an injured American war veteran Jimmy Darmody early in season 1 of the show. The pair quickly bond and Harrow joins Darmody in his career as a bootlegger, working as a hitman for Enoch "Nucky" Thompson, the boss of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Harrow is also used as Thompson's envoy to Canadian distilleries and smugglers, a role that he continues into the next season.

In season 2, Harrow sides with Darmody after the latter sides with his estranged father Louis Kaestner (nicknamed "the Commodore") and Thompson's disgruntled brother Eli to oust Nucky Thompson as the political boss of Atlantic City. During the season, Harrow attempts suicide, but is convinced to keep living after his attempt is thwarted. After Darmody's attempt to oust Thompson fails and he is killed, Harrow takes up the role of caretaker for Darmody's orphaned son Tommy while living with Gillian Darmody, Jimmy's mother. The following season has Harrow recover more of his humanity, starting to date Julia Sigorsky, the daughter of an alcoholic Philippine-American War veteran. However, concurrent developments result in the forces of gangster Gyp Rosetti occupying the brothel that Harrow and the Darmodys live in, and following a concerned Harrow's attempt to take Tommy to safety, he is kicked out. He returns and massacres most of Rosetti's men there, rescuing Tommy and leaving him with Julia and her father before leaving Atlantic City.

Season 4 reveals that Harrow has returned to Wisconsin, although he financed his way there by taking up a contract killing that he has not yet completed. Following his reunion with his now-pregnant sister Emma, Harrow's emotions overcome him and he cannot put down the family dog when it is sick, and he tells Julia that he has had enough of killing. However, the men whose contract Harrow failed to honor arrive at his family farm and he is only saved from execution by his sister. Realizing he is endangering his sister and her unborn child, Harrow returns to Atlantic City and reunites with Julia, now locked in a custody dispute over Tommy with Gillian Darmody. Harrow marries Julia and takes up a job as a dishwasher once he is exonerated for his role in the brothel massacre, with help from Nucky Thompson. Once Gillian Darmody is arrested for murdering a man and claiming he was her son in order to legally inherit the brothel and estate, Harrow realizes the opportunity to win full custody over Tommy. With Gillian having cremated the murdered man's body and claiming that there is no way they can prove the man who died was not Jimmy, Harrow convinces Nucky Thompson to do tell him where Jimmy's body is buried so that he can prove that Gillian murdered another man. In exchange, Harrow promises to kill the gangster Dr. Valentine Narcisse. Harrow tips off the authorities to the location of Jimmy Darmody's body (which is quickly identified owing to Jimmy's wartime injuries requiring screws to be put in one of his legs) and Gillian is convicted and sent to a mental asylum. Sending Tommy and Julia ahead to Wisconsin, Harrow prepares to shoot Narcisse from a concealed position. However, his returning humanity causes him to hesitate and Chalky White's daughter Maybelle wanders into the shot just as he pulls the trigger, resulting in her death. Stunned, Harrow is mortally wounded in the ensuing firefight and he retreats to the Atlantic boardwalk, where he bleeds to death while having a vision of making his way home to his family, his injuries healed and his face complete.

During Boardwalk's run, Harrow quickly became a fan-favorite character and his character growth from alienated, semi-emotionless killer to loving and conflicted family man has been cited as one of the series' best.

The Aleutian Islands campaign was a campaign of the American Theatre of World War II between the forces of Canada and the United States and the Empire of Japan. The campaign was begun by the invasion of the Aleutian islands of Attu and Kiska by Japanese forces in June 1942, with the islands' location useful as both a possible cover for the northern Japanese flank and ability to control northern Pacific transport routes. The remoteness of the islands and the inhospitable winter conditions resulted in the campaign to retake the islands being delayed until the following year. Following the destruction of a resupply convoy by the Royal Canadian Navy at the Komandorski Islands in March 1943, the Japanese were forced to resupply the garrisons by submarine. In May 1943, a joint Canadian-American force retook Attu after two weeks of fighting in Arctic conditions that at times broke into hand-to-hand combat and saw one of the largest Japanese banzai charges of the Pacific War. Following the loss of Attu, Japan secretly abandoned Kiska. American and Canadian forces thus bombed the empty island for three weeks before going ashore and discovering it was abandoned, ending the campaign.

Around 1,500 Allied and 4,000 Japanese soldiers were killed in the campaign, with around 3,500 more Allied soldiers being wounded, many of them suffering from frostbite. In the United States, the campaign was largely ignored due to the simultaneous battle on Guadalcanal, while in Canada, it was covered closely and the subject of wartime propaganda for most of the remainder of the Pacific War. The dominant view of historians is that that the invasion of the Aleutians was a feint or diversion from Japan's simultaneous attack on Midway, although some have posited instead that the attack was a genuine attempt by Japan to protect its northern flank.

The campaign was notable as the only invasion of Canadian soil during World War II, although Alaska was not yet a province of Canada at the time. As a result of the battle and the threat of another Japanese attack, Alaska was effectively under martial law from 1942 until mid-1944 when it became clear that Japan was no longer capable of another such operation.

[*]I did the 1917 election in part because I wanted to show the biggest federal blowout ITTL's Canada. IOTL it was the 1958 election, but the unique circumstances of the election (making a supermajority of Anglophones support the Unionists) and demographics of TTL (many more Anglophones as a percentage than OTL Canada owing to very few "imported" people from non-OTL provinces being non-Anglos) mean that TTL's 1958 is not as lopsided as this one.
[*]You'll notice in the map that the three non-OTL Canadian provinces where the Unionists don't do as well are Dakota (where they lose the popular vote), Wisconsin and Minnesota. That of course is owing to the large portion of people of German ancestry living there.
[*]Obviously there are parts of Boardwalk Empire that are different from OTL owing to Harrow being a Canadian ITTL, including not meeting Jimmy in a veteran's hospital (since Harrow wouldn't qualify as a foreign veteran for treatment there), or as a border-hopping agent of Nucky Thompson (which never happens in the OTL show). His middle name is the same as Jack Huston's and I figured that he'd have to show his passport in one ATL scene that would reveal it, hence its inclusion.
[*]"Wouldn't they just make Richard Harrow from a different state ITTL?" You ask.
Maybe, but I figured the ATL competition in "how many Germans can you shoot?" between Harrow and Francis Pegahmagabow is more than enough to make up for it.
[*]The HMCS Puget is TTL's equivalent of the USS Worden, which was lost IOTL's Aleutian campaign. Both ships were lost not as a result of enemy action, but because they ran aground and had to be scuttled.

What's the POD here? Any WW2 where the USA can apply something equal to OTL's USA's economic power will be a stalemate at best for the Axis.

The POD in Crossroads of Destiny is 1860. The US's economy during this time in CoD started slowly-stagnating during the second term of President Albert Fitzgerald who later died of a stroke during his second term. Scipio Grocer, his VP took over after his death and the economy picked up during his term but still faced inflation and stagnation. During Grocer's second term the stock market crashed but Grocer somewhat sucessfully prevented a full-fledged depression from happening with his Economic Recovery and Reform Package.

In 1928 Jay Gatling would be elected President and the stock market would take another nosedive during his first term. Gatling would urge Congress to pass a declaration of war against the Iron Pact in 1932. Gatling would lose against J. Edgar Hoover in the election and during Hoover's term the American economy would rebound.

During his term the Democratic Alliance would suffer continuous defeats and (Also Alaska is successfully invaded by Japan and major American cities on the Pacific Coast such as Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles are bombarded day and night by Japanese planes) Hoover would ultimately decided to ask the Iron Pact for a armistice which Hitler was eager to sign and afterwards called for a worldwide peace convention in Vienna

Republic of Florida 2015 Election

The Floridian system of government is basically just a Legislative branch headed by the Prime minister, The leader of the governing coalition in the Congress of Commoners and a President elected by the Congress who is required to be Independent by law.

Florida Culturally is Mainly Spanish especially on the Island of Cuba but the further north you go the More English culture mainly from Virginia. West Florida is a mainly English speaking part of the Country with the occasional French and German scattered around the west. This has lead to disenfranchised citizens who want more Autonomy for West Florida. The Islands of Jamacia and the Caymans were occupied by Spain during the American Revolution and during the Spanish American revolts Became independent and voted to Join Florida. Jamacia is quite Diverse with not only Spanish and English being split even but also being the Main African and Italian hub in Florida. The Cayman islands are mainly Just a Tourist hotspot with a low population of English peoples. Cuba is the Most Spanish part of Florida and was originally its own country and briefly a part of Mexico before back when Mexico spanned all the way up to Seattle. Shortly after Texan independence, Cuba voted to join Florida rather than be its own Country although it still has Nationalists to this day. These nationalists are mostly in the Form of Left-wing populists as it was the Hub of Communism and Socialism in the 1940s where it almost gained independence from a Communist government.
