I love any TL where Perot accomplishes something, even if it's just deadlocking the EC. Quick clarifying question as well, looks like Bush dropped Quayle as his running mate for Kemp? Or was there a different situation with HW's veep?
Quayle stepped down as Vice President in early 1991, to replace Justice William Brennan on the Supreme Court after his retirement, and Kemp was nominated to replace him. Many years later, Bush's autobiography would reveal that the move was done to quietly dump Quayle off of the ticket.

Supreme Court Justice Dan Quayle? How did that get passed through the Democratic Congress?

Johann Valdemar Schmidt (1910-1987) also known as Der Rote Schädel (the Red Skull) was a high-ranking official in the German SS during the Nazi regime and the Supreme Leader of the terrorist organization known as HYDRA. Originally a bellhop at the Hotel Kaiserhof, Schmidt would become a national hero after discovering a plot to poison Adolf Hitler by communist agents. Following Hitler’s rise to power, he would later join the SS-Totenkopfverbände and was given the moniker of “The Red Skull” due to his particularly brutal treatment of prisoners. During this time, Schmidt would also become a trusted confidant of Hitler and was later tasked with leading external espionage and sabotage on the Western front. Documents from post-war Germany show that he secretly provided intelligence to the British SOE during this time, allowing them to assassinate his intra-party rival, Reinhard Heydrich.

During 1943, Schmidt would create HYDRA alongside Heinrich Himmler, Wolfgang von Strucker, Heinrich Zemo, and Otto Skorzeny to sabotage Allied war efforts across the world. However, many of these efforts would be foiled thanks to Captain Steve Rogers, the first American “supersoldier”. Throughout the war, the two would often come into conflict with Schmidt kidnapping Rogers’ second in command, James Barnes before Barnes was rescued by Soviet Colonel Anton Vanko. During the last days of the war, Schmidt would be promoted to SS-Obergruppenführer and would personally oversee Operation Thanatos, a plan to destroy the city of New York with thermobaric weapons. Operation Thanatos would be foiled thanks to the intervention of Rogers, who crashed the bombers into the Arctic Ocean. However, Schmidt would secretly survive the plane crash despite losing his nose from frostbite, allowing him to safely relocate members of the Nazi Party out of Europe.

While Himmler and Zemo would be captured and executed for their crimes against humanity, Operation ODESSA was mostly successful in keeping HYDRA alive after the collapse of the Nazi regime. Schmidt later began to develop his own cult of personality within the organization to ensure the absolute loyalty of his followers. Following the end of the Second World War, HYDRA would operate similar to a criminal syndicate, manufacturing drugs, bio-weapons, and highly advanced technology to the highest bidders. These activities would draw the attention of SHIELD chief Nicholas Fury, who ordered John Walker, the new Captain America to investigate HYDRA activities while Rogers remained in a comatose state. When Rogers regained consciousness, he and Walker would find that Schmidt had survived the war after discovering him at an arms deal with Latverian partisans during the Hungarian Revolution.

After being confronted, Schmidt would shoot Walker to death before narrowly escaping being captured by Rogers. Despite multiple attempts by SHIELD to halt the organization’s activities, HYDRA would be responsible for the assassination of several important figures throughout the Cold War such as United Nations General Secretary Dag Hammarskjöld, Senator Robert Kennedy, and King T'Chaka of Wakanda. Schmidt would also form an alliance with New York branches of the Mafia under the leadership of Silvio Manfredi to begin the sale of designer drugs across America. However, Rogers would be unable to stop HYDRA’s growing drug empire due to his refusal to comply with the Superhuman Registration Act of 1974 under the Nixon administration. Following his arrest, Rogers would later be pardoned during the Winter Soldier Plot, in which HYDRA agents kidnapped several Soviet agents including James Barnes.

Schmidt had hoped to brainwash the agents into committing false flag attacks against America before Rogers managed to recover Barnes from his brainwashed state and successfully captured Schmidt. While in SHIELD custody, he would threaten to destroy several cities across the United States using nuclear warheads created with the cooperation of South African scientists. During the Crisis of ‘84, President Ronald Reagan reluctantly allowed Schmidt to flee to the Antarctican HYDRA base of Tötungstadt in exchange for ordering his agents to disarm the nuclear weapons. Rogers would later lead a secret mission to assassinate him during Operation Final Glory and was forced to detonate several HYDRA-built ICBMs before they could be launched at America. This would lead to the death of Captain America, the Red Skull, and several other members of the HYDRA high command in the nuclear destruction of Tötungstadt.

Following the death of Johann Schmidt, Helmut Zemo, the son of Heinrich Zemo would take control over the remnants of HYDRA and Sam Wilson would succeed Rogers as the new Captain America. While the Red Skull continues to be praised by far-right groups and criminal organizations, Schmidt’s actions in ensuring the survival of the Nazi ideology and HYRDA are universally regarded as completely immoral.

The 2018 Australian presidential election was held on 18 April 2018 to elect the President of Australia. The election was conducted via preferential voting. Having been elected to two terms, incumbent President Quentin Bryce was not eligible for re-election.

The election was won by Malcolm Turnbull, a lifelong independent and well-known republican activist, who defeated former Labour First Premier Kevin Rudd in the two-candidate preferred count by a comfortable margin of 54.5% to 45.5%. The primary vote results were highly divided, with Turnbull winning 31.1% and Rudd 26.4%, followed by diplomat and Commonwealth candidate George Brandis on 18.3%, independent businessman Clive Palmer with 17.0%, and environmental activist and Green candidate Janet Rice with 7.2%. Preference flows primarily benefited Turnbull, though he still only held 39.8% of total preferences on the penultimate third count.

Australia should have a two round system for a Presidential election

The 1992 Presidential Election was one of the closest and most controversial election in the history of the United States. As of 2016, it remains the last election since 1824 that required the invocation of the Twelfth Amendment and the last election since 1824 in which the winner of the election did not win the most popular votes, or the most electoral votes. This election also remains the best third party performance since 1912, and the lowest vote percentage for an incumbent president since 1932.

Bush's high popularity after the Gulf War lead to many high-profile Democrats from entering, but the race was later defined by the 1990s recession, which had damaged Bush's standing in the polls, and had lead to the rise of Billionaire CEO Ross Perot's campaign. The Democratic nomination would be decided at the contested 1992 Democratic Convention, with Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton ascending to the nomination after a deal with the Kerrey delegates to name Senator Bob Kerrey to be his Vice-Presidential Nominee. After the nomination, Jerry Brown and his delegates would walk out, many of his supporters ending up backing Ross Perot.

Perot would name former Colorado Governor, Dick Lamm, as his running mate and establish a slim lead in pre-election polls. However, Perot's momentum would fade away into the summer as Clinton and Bush ramped up attacks on the independent businessman and he'd fall to a close third place after the Presidential Debates. During the campaign, Clinton and Perot stressed the economy, with Perot's opposition to NAFTA being a main issue. Bush would attempt to highlight his foreign policy achievements, the success of the Reagan era, and Clinton's personal character.

The election would be close, as it appeared President Bush had narrowly clawed his way into a second term early on in the night, but it would eventually appear that Ross Perot's third-party candidacy would deadlock the electoral college, leaving no candidate with a majority. Although Bush won the most electoral votes, being at 255, he was still 15 electoral votes away from an official majority.

As no candidate secured the required number of votes from the Electoral College, the election was decided by the House of Representatives under the provisions of the Twelfth Amendment to the United States Constitution. House proceedings were stalled by the Clinton campaign's requested recounts in North Carolina and Texas, both decided by a margin under (0.2%) and by reporting issues in California over absentee ballots. After the recounts were halted on December 1st and December 4th, respectively, the House agreed to convene on December 7th to determine the winner. After one ballot, the House voted to declare Bill Clinton as President-elect while the Senate correspondingly voted for his running mate, Bob Kerrey. Only one Representative, Bernie Sanders of Vermont-at-large, voted for Ross Perot.

The 1996 Presidential Election was the second presidential election in a row in which an incumbent president has lost re-election. Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Jack Kemp, and Indiana Senator Richard Lugar bested incumbent Bill Clinton and Bob Kerrey by a wide margin in the electoral college, and a relatively close margin in the popular vote. Perot's 1992 running mate, former Colorado Governor, Dick Lamm, ran under the newly created Reform party and significantly under performed Perot's 1992 numbers, both in the electoral college and popular vote.

Clinton's popularity had waned following the 1994 midterms and Republican takeover of the House and Senate, and it continued to decrease as economic recovery from the 1990s recession remained sluggish into 1995 and 1996. Bitterness from Clinton's "broken victory" in 1992 would also hold down his approval. Despite his unpopularity, Clinton managed to ward off a primary challenge from former Pennsylvania Governor, Bob Casey and Activist Lyndon LaRouche. On the Republican side, the former Congressman and Secretary, Jack Kemp easily won the Republican nomination against candidates such as Bob Dornan, Pat Buchanan, and Steve Forbes.

The economy and foreign policy were the main issues of the campaign, due to the slow recovery under Clinton and the administration's failure in dealing with the Soviet Civil War and the Third Balkan Wars. Kemp chose Senator Richard Lugar, a well-respected foreign policy expert in the Senate as Vice President to increase the ticket's foreign policy credentials, and to sway more voters from the key Midwest region. Personal issues would also dog the campaign, as allegations of Bill Clinton's affairs with White House staffers would follow the President everywhere during the trail.

Kemp would maintain a slight lead in most pre-election polling, and he defeated Bill Clinton by a substantial margin in the electoral vote, being elected President. After the election, Bill Clinton would retire from politics, whilst Bob Kerrey would launch a failed bid for President in 2000.

Interesting scenario.

Also the thing mentions his "pro-labor credentials", despite the fact he tried to blacklist anyone even slightly to the left as a "commie traitor"

The AFL was historically pretty conservative and anti-Communist and played along completely with both the First Red Scare (1919) and the Second Red Scare (McCarthy). ITL, the CIO actually succeeds in unionizing the South, so they also stay apart from the AFL and don't play the moderating influence that it played OTL.

Interesting idea. As a minor quibble, the recounts would happen before the electors voted, and Congress wouldn't begin voting for a president until after the votes are counted on January 6.

This is unironically great. I'd imagine it would gain a similar hatedom as "The West Wing" does among certain leftists, though.
Thanks!
To be honest, I never really got into "The West Wing". Before my time. But I'm a big fan of "The Newsroom". Why is is hated by the left-wing? From the little I got from it, nothing on it ever bothered me.
As for "Cory", West Wing wouldn't be a perfect analogy. The show would be more of developing storyline across the seasons, with a lot of tension, instead of the "problem of the week" we see in the West Wing.

A Democratic Congress IOTL confirmed Clarence Thomas and David Souter. Remember, this is the time when judges were usually confirmed by around 90 votes.

Oops, thanks for the correction.

From what I’ve seen, some tend to view the West Wing as a distillation of Clinton era centrism and all its associated problems, with constant concessions to the republicans of the show and Bartlet and staff never really fighting for any goal (like say...universal health care) so much as maintaining the status quo. Issues of the week like racism or homophobia tend to involve a lot of lectures from straight white men with very little input or follow up on the people affected by it.
It also doesn’t help that Sorkins of writing can often get a bit lecture-y, relying on a lot of academic jargon and with what many view as its contempt for the less educated or the cultured.

Here's a dystopia I did in my free time. If there's any questions about this, just feel more than free to ask me and I'll serve you up some answers.

A bit of a shameless plug if I do say so myself, but I think it's better for more people to notice it here and perhaps go and explore the fun world-building thread that is the AHFA 2020 World Cup and find their own teams to root for!

Born to a French-speaking family of poor fishermen in the southernmost Malagasy town of Androka, Jérôme Dutertre had idealized football from an early age, with his grandfather making him a sock ball that they would kick around their boat during their nightly fishing trips. The conflict within the young man grew with each passing day, however - should he inherit his family's long-standing and respected occupation or should he try to make a name for himself by pursuing a career in football?

Remembering his grandfathers final words to him before his passing from old age, Dutertre decided for the latter option. He quickly joined the ranks of Marianne GSC, a small, predominantly Romance-speaking football club named after the infamous Benjamin Hornigold's ship. Once there, he was quickly inducted into the defence because of his large and muscular build, but it was not for long.

Dutertre cites that his desire to join the Free Malagasy Navy plagued him for most of his short-lived career, as many of his uncles and grand-uncles joined its ranks and made great careers for themselves across the world's oceans. In the end, his dissipating enthusiasm for sportsmanship resulted in his ever-growing ache for the seas winning over, and he left the club.

"It was a painful decision, but one I had to make and I've never regretted since.", he is quoted as saying in a 2019 interview. In the navy, Dutertre's spirit for defence and valor quickly shone through, as he became one of the many sailors credited with diffusing the infamous 1999 Malagasy-Indian Naval Crisis, when a group of Indian-backed pirates assaulted the Malagasy patrol close to the Horn of Africa for a full month before the diplomatic channels were successfully opened and the crisis resolved.

His bravery and calm made him a national star overnight, but Dutertre remained determined that only the seas were his to enjoy, yet melancholy persisted. The sweet calling of soil became too much to bear upon his witnessing his crew members partaking in a football match atop their ship's deck. "Damn them.", he mentioned while grinning from ear to ear in a pre-AHFA 2020 Q&A session, "Just when I thought I had it all figured out, that pesky ball up and comes out of nowhere!"

In 2014, he was invited by the board of his former club to perhaps reconsider his calling and join Marianne as its manager. Out of nowhere and much to the shock of everyone, Dutertre accepted. His unique sense of leadership and determination quickly endeared him to the players, and he had done what many thought was impossible - in only four seasons, he had moved the small team most Malagasy had never even heard of up into the Free People's Premier League, an unprecedented achievement in the club's 104 year-long history. In the 2017/2018 season, Marianne had ended up in the center of the table, again surprising many experts and becoming one of the favorite clubs for the people of the world to bet on.

In 2018, Dutertre was invited to become the manager of Madagascar. Up until then, the Peoples' Football Association of Madagascar was mostly content with remaining a regional power, enjoying the closeness and playstyle of its African brethren, but Dutertre dreamed of something greater. He quickly went to work and made another miracle come to life - having his team qualify for the 2020 World Cup.

"It was an infuriating amount of work, but it was nothing the boys could not have done!" he said merrily in April 2020. Now, Madagascar stands as one of the underdogs of the tournament, with the vast majority of experts predicting its unceremonious exit from the group stage, but Dutertre and his players do not care at all. "We have already achieved everything that we have wanted, and to participate in such a grand event that celebrates diversity and freedom... Well, there is no gold in the world that could convince me not to feel like the happiest man alive."

Since an early age, Ignjat Sorgo had shown what kind of a man he would go on to become. As the second son of the head of the main branch of one of Ragusa's oligarchic families, the only thing Sorgo was accustomed to was splendor and never taking no for an answer. Many believe he was spoiled rotten by his family, who knew no bounds when it came to their favorite son. As a way of showing his power, young Ignjat was allowed to practice football in the most popular Ragusan club of Sloga, located in the nation's capital of Dubrovnik.

While there, Sorgo would butt heads with players that were not of noble birth, with a particular audio tape from early 2010 that has him allegedly call many of his own teammates "low-born maggots and brainless barbarians". Of course, Sorgo has vehemently denied the accusations ever since then, but some evidence of his guilt may be the fact that he left Sloga only months after the leak for a lucrative contract in Macedon, where he would join Galata, a well-known club from Vizantion, the City on Two Continents. Having grown bored of the Old World rather quickly, Sorgo would move to New Holland, signing a contract many believed was millions-heavy and a likely machination of his father Luca.

His penchant for expensive things would not endear him to anyone, and during his stay in Mauritsstad, the capital of New Holland, his art collection would begin to number hundreds upon hundreds of paintings ranging from the 13th century all the way to the present. While playing for Fortuna, Sorgo, a well-known Ragusan nationalist, stated in an infamous 2013 interview that he "would never join a filthy Venetian club in a million years", which many cite as the reason that his alleged contract with at least a couple notable Venetian clubs never went through. Some even believe that Alvise Bernardi, President of the Venetian Football Association, introduced an informal ban on any kind of Sorgo's participation in the nation's football, even including Venetian clubs that may attempt to recruit him.

Unfazed by this, Sorgo sought greener pastures in the Confederate States of America, where he would settle in Orlando and quickly make himself a favorite of both the public while chasing the ball on the pitch, as well as the old planter class whose social circles he had introduced himself to fairly quickly and got on with them splendidly.

Ignjat Sorgo remains a controversial figure in both Ragusan and world football, but none can deny his technique and skill with the ball. It remains to be seen what may become of Ragusan national football team's participation in the 2020 AHFA World Cup, as many critics point out that prohibiting low-born Ragusans from becoming members of the national team may only doom their efforts and hopes of greater success in both this tournament and in the future.

Anne Bonny was only one of the many famous pirates who had abandoned their strongold at Nassau, West Indies, after Governor Woodes Rogers' violent crackdown on privateers and buccaneers alike. The exiles would sail along the western coasts of Africa, plundering and razing everything they found within their pistols' reach. Once they sailed around the Cape of Good Hope, some of the pirates began to question their purpose, leaving the captains to debate internally how to settle the matter. The ones wishing to find new land to build a New Nassau won over the plunderers just barely, and Anne was part of the winning faction. Having lost her captain and lover Jack Rackham, otherwise known as Calico Jack, in one of the storms during their campaign along Africa's coast, Bonny just barely saved Rackham's ship from certain demise, thus also shattering the image of women being bad omens on ships. Calico Jack's crew quickly took a liking to Bonny thanks to her incredible feat.

In the late 1710s, the pirates would land on Madagascar and quickly work their way into the populace's hearts, which put them into conflict with the tribal chiefs of the Malagasy island. Undeterred, the pirates' complex network of alliances would only grow in the coming years, having expanded in a series of wars that led to them controlling most of the central and southern parts of the island by the 1750s.

Anne would, during these wars, work extensively on freeing the slaves and the chained peoples found on Madagascar, Africa's eastern coast and sometimes even the Indian Ocean at large. No one is certain about her motivations, but many sources do say that at least seventy slave ships were liberated by Bonny and her crew, and some sources even going as far as citing one-hundred and fifty. This course of action would only increase in fervor and frequency in the waning days of her career. As such, an interesting term had emerged to describe the people that Bonny had freed from their shackles of oppression and who decided to make Madagascar their home - Old Anney's Children. Even to this day, circa 2.7% of the Malagasy population deems itself the descendants of Old Anney's Children, an achievement that made Bonny's status legendary in Malagasy history books and national memory.

Sure, but they had the "non-partisan" nature of being judges. Dan Quale does not have any veil of being non-partisan and is seen as an idiot by most of the country at the time.

I think i'm more sad that 17% voted for Palmer the Hutt. Honestly though if we do become a Republic i'd love to see this system adopted (even if the Presidential position is mostly ceremonial).
