The presidents of the United States of America in The Crossroads of Destiny, including pre-PoD presidents but not including the incumbent because everything's up in the air about that.

What's the situation with McCullough, and Muller dying less than a day in? What was the line of succession, because I believe at that time OTL it would have been Pres-VP-Pro Tempore-Speaker. I'm not sure the SoS was on that line at all until the 20th century OTL.

Blaine and Muller were shot by the same person, Muller just lived a few hours longer.

The law making the SoS second in line for the presidency was passed in 1886 IOTL, I don't remember when it was passed ITTL.

It wasn't really passed ITTL until Orléans First term that make the SoS second in line . Before it was just "hey , we have a player as SoS . Can't give the presidency to a NPC"

Aside from the typical election game shenanigans (tons of parties, naked expies of both real people and fictional characters from pop culture, blatant self-inserts, etc.), that's a lot of presidents who died in office.

Post-POD, you guys have killed off twice as many presidents (13- Crittenden, de Clinton, Dewey, Blaine, Muller, Bonaparte, Fitzgerald, Hoover, Orléans, Jones, Bell, Potter, Murillo) than died in office IOTL (6- Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Harding, F. Roosevelt, Kennedy) in a similar period of time.
For further reference, I thought I'd explain how each President who died in office met their demise:
Crittenden- "A small cabal of Confederate sympathizers started a plot to assassinate President Crittenden. On October 15, 1862, they attacked his carriage while he was traveling, shooting him twice and killing him."

de Clinton- "Soon after taking office, President de Clinton became the fourth president in a row to be the target of an assassination attempt. He was shot, but narrowly survived. The assassin claimed to be a New England secessionist trying to save the Union from the Confederate tyranny of de Clinton. In a highly publicized trial, he was eventually found not guilty by reason of insanity. This ruling became even more controversial when, on June 17, 1878, President Nathaniel Jay de Clinton died after a period of sickness. It remains disputed whether the wounds he received in the assassination attempt contributed to his death."

Dewey- "Dewey suffers a major heart attack in office. While it initially seems as if he might recover, the president dies on February 14, 1890."

Blaine/Muller- Alexander J. de Clinton, son of the late President de Clinton, defeats Blaine in the 1892 Conservative convention when the President tries to run for a full term. In response, Blaine recreates the Democratic Party and runs as its nominee, and in a huge upset defeats both de Clinton and the Democratic-Republican candidate. Alexander doesn't take this all too well, and "de Clinton shoots and kills President Blaine during a town hall meeting held shortly after his inauguration on March 10th, 1893. The President survives through the first few bullets, but the last bullet is fatal and goes straight through his heart's veins and arteries. The President is declared dead on the scene. One of the bullets hit VP Muller, piercing his jugular vein and leaving him heavily bleeding on the ground. The blood loss is too rapid for doctors at the scene of the assassination to handle, and they declare the impromptu President dead just hours after Blaine is pronounced dead."

Bonaparte- "On November 3, 1903, President Henry Napoleon Bonaparte was shot by a self-proclaimed anarchist. He became briefly comatose and died a week after the incident."

Fitzgerald- "President Fitzgerald apparently could not handle the stress of his second term. He died after a stroke on November 15, 1921."

Hoover- Hoover was able to lead the country out of the Gatling Depression, but lost World War II, which cost him the election against Orleans and the Conservative candidate. In response, he ordered FBI Director Huey Long to have Orleans killed. Meanwhile, Hoover would try to dissolve Congress, and seize power as a dictator. However, Long decided to take Hoover on a drive into the Maryland countryside, and after the driver, who was in cahoots, handed him a pistol, "he suddenly slammed Hoover's head to the front seat and fired two rounds through the skull, then opened the door and kicked the body out to lay in the bushes nearby." A week later, the President's dead body was discovered, and the FBI revealed his plans to start a self-coup(with any evidence of their involvement wiped, of course). To this day, no one knows who the assassin was.

Orleans- "A few hours ago, Orleans decided to visit one of the poorer neighborhoods in Boston. Empathize with the commoners, stuff like that, give him some political bonus points. To not make it awkward for the locals, he decided to travel there only with light protection, a few guards, that's all. And what do you know - one of the local unemployed in the streets stole a pistol from somewhere and took a few shots at the President. He's been detained - name's John Kennedy, a number of diagnosed medical problems, unfit for service and decided to lay off his anger of the Commander-in-Chief - but the President is gravely injured."

Jones- "On December 23rd, 1966 in the midst of speaking to a crowd of college graduates at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, an assassin shoots and kills President Jones during his speech and upon being tackled by the crowd, it's quickly discovered that the assassin is also a suicide bomber and the bomb in his chest detonates once he hits the ground, killing dozens of college graduates and gravely injuring both the President and Vice President. The assassin and suicide bomber is discovered to be Huey P. Newton, a radical black nationalist and a member of the SCLA who deeply hated President Jones for what he perceived to be his ambivalence on civil rights.

Both President Jones and Vice President Bell die within days of receiving their critical injuries, leaving Secretary of State Maxie Short as the next President of the United States by January of 1967."

Potter- Potter starts WWIII against communist Germany, who is TTL's version of the Soviet Union, in order to stop Generalplan Ost, a genocide being carried out in Eastern Europe. Unfortunately, Potter miscalculates when he tries to end the war quickly by overthrowing German leader Erich Mielke, and in response, Mielke starts a nuclear exchange that kills hundreds of millions across the globe. "In response to the widespread destruction brought by the nuclear strikes, disgraced former FBI Director B.O.B. Lennon[who had been fired by Potter earlier due to a scandal where the FBI spied on Potter's political opponents that had nearly gotten Potter himself impeached] decided to follow American tradition by orchestrating an assassination plot against President Potter. He would personally shoot the president while a bomb would dispose of as many cabinet officials as possible. Lennon, who sought to include as many people harmed by Potter's actions as possible, risked discovery due to the size of the plot, but the skilled spymaster remained undetected by the distracted federal government. The plot went into motion on April 20, 1984. The bomb was detected as soon as it entered D.C., triggering alarms throughout the city's security system. However, there was not enough time to save the president, who was shot by Lennon twice and died a few hours afterwards."

Murillo- In response to the Radical Murillo being elected, Louisiana Governor Jim Buckley announces the formation of the National Salvation Government, a far-right organization that wanted to overthrow Murillo and restore decades of conservative dominance. The government began treating the NSG as terrorists and in response, "Buckley took the actions of a terrorist and concocted a plot to kill President Murillo, Vice President Moon, and Secretary of State Bonaparte. The scheme went into action on May 1, 1987, May Day. National Salvation soldiers shot the President and Secretary of State; the former died hours later, while the later was initially expected to survive before his death on May 4. However, Vice President Moon was not at the scene and the terrorist sent to assassinate her was caught by security."

gap80: Charlton Heston vs The Killdozer
Charlton Heston vs The Killdozer

After California Governor Rosey Grier was run over by a stolen US Army Tank in 1995 while out jogging one day, Colorado Governor Charlton Heston hastily moved to reinforce the political office buildings in his state, starting with the state capital of Denver. The renovations and security updates continued even after the 1995-1996 court cases determined Grier’s death to have been accident and not intentional, as there was “too little of a chance” that Shawn Nelson, the tankjacker, knew of Grier’s location at the time.

RO01wDF.png

Nevertheless, by the time of Governor Heston’s successful election to a second term, both the Governor’s Mansion and the legislative Capitol Building were equipped with impressive high-tech security features. The 1999-2001 state legislature criticized these features as being restrictive of movement and transparency in the government, especially after the state senate leader was reported to have been almost shot by a security robot after a smudge of chocolate on his thumb led to him failing a fingerprint ID scan upon trying to enter the legislative chamber. Despite the security features making Heston increasingly unpopular with the state’s lawmakers, the economy was in full-speed, and he narrowly won election to a third term in 2002. In 2003, the state house of representatives failed to impeach Heston on the grounds of abuse of power. Throughout these controversies, Heston’s paranoia seemed to grow even further. After the impeachment vote, Heston took “an additional precautionary step” of installing a gun vault, a gun case, and a gun rack in his office at the Capital Building, and began wearing a bulletproof vest to work every day. Many began to question the Governor’s sanity.

Then Heemeyer showed up.

Strikingly similar to 1995’s Shawn Nelson, Marvin John Heemeyer was a blue-collar worker driven to the point of insanity by numerous causes whom decided to take out his anger at the government in the form of a destructive vehicular rampage. Marvin John Heemeyer terrorized his home town of Granby, CO, with a custom-reinforced bulldozer the media quickly labelled “the Killdozer” before heading directly for the state capitol of Denver.

This was a moment Heston had been preparing for. Upon seeing the bulldozer breach the police car perimeter, the Governor raced to his office. He quickly returned with a bazooka, ran down the capital building’s front steps, adjusted his weapon, and fired at the killdozer’s caterpillar treads. A direct hit, the tank broke down and came to a stop just at the edge of the capital building’s front steps. One minute later, Heemeyer jumped out with a gun, but a sniper on a roof across the street immediately took him out.

63pR2xR.png

While Nelson’s rampage had been psychological and random, Heemeyer targeted the buildings of those he deemed responsible for him losing his muffler shop lease to a concrete production plant. Heemeyer’s state representative and state senator whom supported the plant’s construction were in the capital building, and as a result, some believe they were the target of his planned attack on the capital building, and not the Governor.

Despite this, the incident swiftly became international news, with the sniper team being praised and Heston being idolized by the right for taking out a tank single-handedly, and at the age of 80, no less. South Park satirized the incident a week after the fact. With Heston’s approval ratings through the roof, the Constitution Party tried to nominate Heston for President of the United States in September. Heston declined, but many articulate that had he accepted the nomination, the Constitution party would have received its highest numbers ever.

In late 2005, the Colorado Democrats managed to narrowly pass a law prohibiting the possession of weapons as powerful and destructive as bazookas on capital grounds. After attempts to veto and repeal the law failed, Heston caved in, and replaced the Bazooka with a rifle. Regardless, the 2004 Assassination attempt only increased his popularity even more. He won re-election to an unprecedented fourth term in 2006 at age 83 in a near-landslide. Governor Heston achieved fame once again upon punching out cold an unbalanced would-be assassin in 2007. Heston died in office, passing away peacefully in his sleep from natural causes, in February 2010, age 86.

On a slight tangent, how many major/relevant political parties are there in the US in this TL?
As of the present? Four.

There's the Greens, a centre-left party that's rather socially liberal, but a little moderate on economic issues.
They're allied with the Radicals, a democratic socialist party with a heavy Christian tint.
Their opponents are the National Alliance, a broad tent party of the right-wing that's rather Third Way at present.
And the National Left, a left-wing nationalist and isolationist party that calls for no internationalism at all. They allied with the right-wing in 1992.

On a slight tangent, how many major/relevant political parties are there in the US in this TL?
Here's the list of Presidents, Vice Presidents, and defeated tickets, and here is the current composition of Congress after the 1994 midterms, and TB's descriptions for each:
Majority(248):
Green:
118- The party of the center-left, it isn't exactly a "hippie" party, but it isn't that far from the counter-culture. Think 60s hippies who grew up but never lost their beliefs. Can be really moderate at times.
Radical: 99- The Greens' more socialist sister party, they're in an alliance. The Radicals were originally the bigger party, but is now on an equal footing with the Greens. Has a strong Christian element.
Free Market Alliance: 23- A supposedly-libertarian party that advocates for a free market and against socialism, its recent actions have made it clear this is just a party for Qatari interests[which they control via a xenocracy], including endorsing the left-wing Moon in '92.
Reform: 4- The old party of the center-left before the Greens took that, they're still around somehow, and those days is a rather "pro-business" party compared to the Greens and Radicals. Dying by the day, though.
Alternative for America: 4- A small party with the distinction that it's unrepentantly internationalist in an era where Americans are tired of international commitments.
Minority(193):
National Alliance:
125- The party of the broad right-wing, it's sorta in a "Third Way" situation now, with their president going liberal on social issues and populist economically.
National Left: 65- Following in a rich tradition of left-wing nationalism like Anthony Harris' National Front, they have rose high thanks to President Moon's interventionism, but their allying with the right-wing Barclay[the current President] has hurt their appeal.
Christian Heritage: 3- Despite [the Second Civil War] damaging the far-right, there's still a big appetite for social conservatism. With Barclay widely seen to have "failed" that, the CHP has risen up to fight for "family values".

It seems like people liked the non-canon Hawaii-in-Canada election infobox. Guess my hypothesis that the thread likes political infoboxes with nice maps and my approximations of what each state's (or combined states') political culture would look like in Canada instead of the United States.

Anyways, here's some sports infoboxes.

The 2008 Detroit Lions are widely considered the worst Canadian Football League (CFL) team of all-time and the only team to lose every regular season game since the season was expanded to 18 games in 1986. It was also the second time the Lions franchise went winless in the regular season, the first being in 1942, when many players were serving overseas in the Second World War. While the Lions had struggled since the 1990s, the multi-year slump under general manager Matt Millen, exacerbated by Millen's poor draft selections, seemed to be over with the team's four victories in the preseason. Quarterback Drew Stanton seemed to have gelled into the Lions offense and the team was projected by many to end the season around 7-9 wins. But a series of early losses and Stanton's injury in the third game of the season against Minnesota rendering him out for most of the rest of the season, quickly dispirited the team. Combined with truly atrocious defense, which gave up 692 points (the second-most behind the 1991 Saskatchewan Roughriders' 710), and a series of underwhelming quarterbacks brought in to replace Stanton, led to the team becoming the laughingstock of the CFL.

Coming on the heels of the global financial crisis and the near-collapse of the Big Three automakers, the Lions seemed to symbolize Detroit's fall from grace and they entered the record books with a 24-37 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Halloween (October 31). Following the season's end, both Millen and head coach Steve Mariucci were fired, along with most of the rest of the coaching staff. While the Lions have not returned to the Grey Cup, a series of prudent draft picks (including 2010 first overall pick Ndamukong Suh) resulted in the team reaching the playoffs in the next few years.

Hope Solo is a Canadian soccer goalkeeper who has been regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in women's football. Born in Oregon, Solo was a standout at the University of Oregon, and quickly made it onto the Canadian national team. In her club career, Solo first was drafted by the Philadelphia Charge of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) in 2003, and after the league folded a year later, spent time in clubs in both France and Sweden. Following the revival of top-level soccer in the United States and Canada, Solo played in the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) for both the Chicago Red Stars and magicJack before the WPS folded. She spent a year with the Seattle Sounders in the W-League before playing for the Seattle Reign in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) from 2013 until 2016.

On the international scene, Solo helped lead Team Canada to a bronze at the 2003 World Cup, and silver medals at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. She holds numerous Canadian goalkeeping team records, and has won multiple awards for goalkeeping, including being named best goalkeeper for both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. Following the 2016 Olympics, injuries led Solo to sit out the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

While Solo is one of the most talented soccer players Canada has produced, she is also one of the most controversial. Her outspoken attitude and denigration of both coaching decisions and other teams led to her twice being suspended from the national team, and her 2014 arrest for domestic violence, caused considerable debate when she was allowed to remain on the national team while the case went on (the charges were ultimately dropped). Solo has also criticized the Canadian Soccer Association and accused disgraced Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) president Sepp Blatter of sexually assaulting her.

John Randle is a retired American-Canadian football defensive end/defensive tackle who set several professional football sack records during his career. Born in poverty in rural Mumford, Texas, Randle worked odd-jobs to help his family while still in school, and managed to attain a scholarship to play at Division II Texas A&M–Kingsville (then known as Texas A&I). Slight and undersized for a defensive end, Randle wasn't drafted and was passed on by the few National Football League (NFL) teams he tried out for. Instead, he signed as an international free agent with the Canadian Football League (CFL)'s Minnesota Vikings.

Randle's reign of terrorizing CFL quarterbacks started inauspiciously, recording only 1.5 sacks in his rookie season. But once Randle hit upon his on-field persona of a seemingly crazed trash-talker (who read up on opponents before each game to get a psychological advantage) and perfected his pass-rushing techniques, he was almost unstoppable. In his sophomore season he led the league with 16.5 sacks and in 1992, he anchored the Vikings defense by taking down opponents' quarterbacks 20 times, helping to lead Minnesota to the Grey Cup (where they lost to the Calgary Stampeders). The following year, he would record 21.5 sacks and in 1994 he reached 23.5. Randle managed to reach 20 sacks again in 1996 and in the 1997 season, he sacked opposing quarterbacks 27.5 times, setting a professional football record. The following year, Randle was instrumental in helping the Vikings reach the Grey Cup, where they triumphed over Calgary to win their first Cup since 1976. Randle would spend two more years with the Vikings and helped them again reach the Grey Cup in 2000, where he won his second title after the Vikings dispatched the BC Lions. In the off-season, Randle signed as a free agent with the Portland Thunder and spent his final three seasons there, and would lead the CFL in sacks for the sixth and final time in 2001 (with 19.5) in a Thunder jersey. He would end his career with a total of 239 sacks, 39 more than NFL leader Bruce Smith.

Aside from his two Grey Cup trophies, Randle accumulated numerous awards during his CFL career, being named to the CFL All-Star team six times, the conference all-star team a combined 10 times (nine with the East Division, once with the West), and was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player three times. After his career, he was named to the CFL All-Decade Team for the 1990s and the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honour, in addition to being enshrined in both the College and Canadian Football Hall of Fame. After his football career, Randle became a naturalized Canadian citizen and currently resides in Minnesota.

-------------------------------------------------

  • The MOP and MOR in the Lions infobox stand for "Most Outstanding Player" and "Most Outstanding Rookie". There would be a "Most Outstanding Canadian", but considering Spokane-born Hanson is a Canadian ITTL, he gets both team awards.
  • Again, the University of Oregon that Solo attended is IOTL the University of Washington.
  • Yes, there was a top-level women's soccer team named magicJack.
  • Hope Solo almost certainly would have been awarded the Order of Canada ITTL if she wasn't so controversial and didn't have such a colorful off-field life.
  • For those who aren't aware, when more than one player brings down a quarterback before he can throw the ball, all the players involved are credited with half of a sack.

Way back in the day I did a few wikiboxes where a few politicians had alternative careers. Thought I'd try doing a few more, starting with these two; Dubya doesn't follow in his daddy's footsteps, and Uncle Joe turns his love into a business venture...

Incredible! Definitely very interesting to see how much an electoral college even in Britain can lead to massive victories out of nowhere.
