STEPHEN IN OTHER UNIVERSES
Part 2 of 3

Stephen the CEO of Apple

Just because of this photo I found of him:

Stephen the Farmer

Instead of moving to California soon after his birth, the Hillenburg family stays in Oklahoma:

Stephen the Freedom Fighter

The Cuban Missile Crisis goes south and nuclear weapons are exchanged between the US and USSR. This causes Stephen to grow up in a much harsher world - a technopunk-like world, where (most of) Stephen’s native country has become one where creativity is censored and regulated by the pro-conformity “comforting” government that slowly came to power in the aftermath of “the Exchange” – and Stephen refuses to play by their rules. In 2012, at the height of his movement, the following notice appeared on billboards, store windows and telecommunication screens:

I couldn't get the words to be any clearer, so I went with more conventional look.

Stephen the General

In a TL in which America wins the Vietnam War, Stephen is inspired by the positive depictions of war that surround him, and with the permission of his father, who worked for the military at the time of his birth, Stephen signs up in 1979 at the age of 18. Stephen "Mac Daddio" Hillenburg ultimately dies from an old war injury that began to act up soon after rising to the rank of General in 2013, causing him to only oversee the initial operations of the US invasion of North Korea in 2014 and ultimately forcing him into early retirement in 2015:

Stephen the Mormon

According to a source I can’t seem to find at the moment, Stephen once briefly worked as a park ranger in Utah at some point in his life. Here, the time he spent working at that park influences his career path, while an encounter with some persuasive local Mormons gets him to stick around for much longer than he’d initially planned. This ultimately get him involved in local politics, and after a stint in a federal office, pairs his new religion with his affinity for animation to launch “Desert Dan,” a children’s cartoon show that contains incredibly subtle Mormon overtones and more noticeable environmentalist themes. “Desert Dan” runs for 5 critically-acclaimed years (2022-2027) before Hillenburg concludes the series, retires from public life, and passes away five years later at 70, the same age his father was when he died:

Stephen the Musician

He was a trumpet player in high school; what if he had played guitar as well?:

Stephen the President

Through his Father’s job at NASA, Stephen meets President Lyndon B. Johnson at a very young and formidable age, leading to him developing an interest in politics and becoming less camera-shy than he was IOTL. After following Johnson’s advice and enlisting in the US Navy at age 18, returns to California in 1983 to pursue college degrees in marine biology, astrophysics, and law, while simultaneously working in animation. SpongeBob SquarePants, Stephen’s opus, airs in 1999, to the praise of critics and audiences. He mounts his first bid for public office in early 2002, at the height of SpongeBob SquarePants’ popularity. Six years later, Stephen is winning over liberal college professors and the youth vote by being a technocrat who can surf and play rock music, and winning over others by backing the arts and sciences, government transparency, social justice reform, women's rights protection (his wife supported Planned Parenthood IOTL) and environmental protection policies in a surprisingly successful bid for the Oval Office. His eight years in office were marked by healthcare reform, economic recovery, and the historic 2014 Cleveland Accords that ended hostilities in Syria. His ALS diagnosis in December 2016, just weeks prior to leaving office, culminated in his death roughly five years later.

(Bonus: Since Stephen gets Barack’s job, here’s Obama the Cartoonist)

Barack Obama grows up in Hawaii where the marine life inspires him to learn to draw at an early age. Ultimately, he develops some animated TV series concerning marine life or something:

Stephen the Professor

“Those who can’t do, teach” Stephen ends up a jaded tenured marine biology professor at the Maine Maritime Academy after previously working at the Florida Institute of Technology and the Orange County Marine Institute. He publishes several “dry” textbooks about marine life throughout his life, but in 2019, his publisher posthumously releases a children’s book that Stephen had worked on in secret for decades. The Intertidal Zone receives lukewarm reviews from critics but becomes a bestseller for its combination of information and humor:

Stephen the Surfer

Hillenburg was a surfer in OTL, so let’s say entering a surfing competition at a young age has a profound effect on his life:

And finally, based on a request…

Stephen the “Supreme Dictator of America”

When the Great Salad Oil Scandal (OTL!) plunged the United States into recession on November 22, 1963 (the POD), people thought things would soon enough get better. They didn’t. After a year of consistently high unemployment, Rockefeller triumphed over Kennedy in the 1964 election, only to worsen the situation as higher regulations stifled innovation and growth. Warfare in Southeast Asia, Civil Rights Activists becoming more violent in the face of little legislative progress, and rising poverty rates led to riots overwhelming several state governments. Inflation rose, banks either closed or foreclosed, and in 1968, the economy officially entered a severe depression.

What followed after that – a string of riots, disasters, awful presidents, wars, and ultimately the capitulation of capitalism in the USA in 1991 – was what young Stephen grew up surrounded by, influencing his direction in life. His father, US Army man Kelly Hillenburg, losing his job at Hughes Aircraft in 1964, his brother Bryan being shot by National Guardsmen during a riot in 1967, his mother Nancy losing hope as the family teetered on the very edge of poverty and homelessness – these are what drove Stephen away from his childhood passion of marine biology and into the angry mobs crowding up the streets. His father, scorn by the nation he had given the best years of his life to, soon joined him in the marches and midnight meetings, and the two quickly rose through the ranks of the radicals seeking power in America through force, after more peaceful avenues of change had proved fruitless.

As the years went on, the enemies of the people were vanquished, and a new government was formed, first with Peter Isaac Diamondstone, Mickey Leland and Gloria La Riva leading a triumvirate as the ’90s dawned. At that time, Stephen finally flexed his artistic muscle in the new state-run animation studios in Encino, where his propagandistic cartoon sea creatures helped him win election to the newly-formed People’s National Assembly in 1994. Meanwhile, Hillenburg Sr. became the Secretary of Defense in 1992 – then the 1994-1995 attacks prompted the PNA to implement the New Constitution’s “National Emergency” Article. Hillenburg Sr. replaced the Triumvirate in 1995 with the intention of ensuring his grandchildren would live in a safe land. To this end, Hillenburg Sr. increased the nation’s nuclear stockpile to ward off further enemy attacks. Upon victory being declared in 1997, Hillenburg Sr.’s popularity skyrocketed to the point that he got away with adopting the Roman title of “dictator.”

In 2000, Hillenburg appointed his son Stephen to the position of Vice-Dictatorship with little opposition. And after the death of Hillenburg Sr. in 2006, young Stephen, the once-shy boy from California, became his nation’s leader. Stephen openly made it known that he would not tolerate the lingering elements “who oppose the will of the masses,” and to that end also increased the nation’s nuclear stockpile. He also expanded the powers of his office and made it mandatory for all schools to offer classes concerning the cartoon shorts he had developed years earlier. However, he also increased funding for medical research, housing, and public sanitation, leading to a breakthrough in ALS research in 2017. Environmental protection is also an impactful passion of his. Currently, due to the loosening of certain laws and oppressive practices since his time in power began, Hillenburg’s dictatorship is not universally condemned, and indeed is actually supported by certain sections of the world’s population:

Its Happening: Ron Paul and the 2012 Election
ItsHappening.PNG

The Presidential Election of 2012 was a history-making election. Ron Paul is the oldest man ever elected to the office of President to date, taking office at the age of 77. Paul won the election off the coattails of the unpopularity of President Obama, and the unpopularity of the then ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Paul was able to win over conservative republicans by selling his points against big government and taxes. Despite not contesting any primaries, he deadlocked the convention enough to steal the nomination from Mitt Romney, who would concede to Paul. Paul made sure to please moderates with his choice of fellow, yet much more moderate, libertarian Republican, Former Governor Gary Johnson of New Mexico as his running mate. his big tent campaign against Obama and the wars in the Middle East proved quite successful. He nailed Obama hard in the debates, especially on Benghazi, and in the end defeated the incumbent President, won the 2012 election, and made many neocons quite unhappy, but he didn't care, still doesn't care either, because you know why? He's Ron Paul, and ITS HAPPENING
