A Thousand Points of Light: Presidential Election of 2012

One might wonder how a country with two dozen inelastic, nationally-competitive parties operates within the institutional boundaries of the American electoral college; indeed, the nation's political scientists have been wondering it for decades. The continued functioning of America's presidential elections rests mostly on informal institutions based on broad, fluid national coalitions negotiated between party elites for each individual election, which then work to produce a winner in one of three ways.

The first, and by far the most common, takes advantage of the indirect nature of the electoral college to allow the already-broad coalitions which formed to contest the elections to negotiate with each other in the period between the election and the EC balloting to produce a majority EC winner.

In 2012, the Kašić administration was on the rocks. The recovery from the financial crisis proceeding was slower than expected, and while Kašić's populist coalition was beginning to fray over social and cultural disagreements, the political forces of the center were reconsolidating their strength. However, to his campaign's credit, his coalition held together enough to keep the race close. Had this election gone to the House, as it did in 2008, there is a real chance that the administration would have survived.

But it wasn't to be. After a relatively brief negotiation, Governor Huntsman instructed his electors to vote for Governor Sandoval, in return for a fusion cabinet and a handful of non-compete agreements in vulnerable districts of Arizona and Virginia for the next two congressional cycles. This was the first president elected from the National Liberal Party, marking the symbolic end of the Social Democrats' brief period of political dominance.

Solaris SA-94 was an authorized and secretive manned space flight that occurred on September 10, 1994. It was part of the then-confidential “Futuristic Field Trips of America” program, a joint venture between the Department of Education’s “Project Coeus” and NASA’s “Semi-Sapient Spaceship” initiative. Documents show that the expedition saw an undercover female government employee (name classified), posing as a school teacher, take eight children of retracted identity on a day trip throughout the solar system. It was one of at least 52 “field trips” involving the test subjects, and one of the first chronologically. It is (usually) considered the first known time that children have been sent into space. Other than a minor and non-injurious “helmet malfunction” on Pluto’s surface, no psychical or psychological harm came to the children; the results showing that they learned much about astronomy on the voyage. Despite these results, the burden upon the taxpayers makes the further construction of shape-shifting “school bus” model vessels unlikely to be used widely in the American education system.

Any concerns about the ethics of sending a group of prepubescent children hurling at speeds faster than light towards gas giants can be handwaved by the fact that their parents and guardians all signed permission slips (possibly only skimming them though).
