The 1996 Presidential Election took place following Paul Tsongas's landmark legislation that substantially increased "Negro" rights and gave them the right to vote in all 48 states. While the legislation was popular in most Northern and Western states, in the South, whites and the powerful 'White League" began rioting. Not only that, but the South Carolina Freedom party threatened to hold a succession referendum and some other Nationalist groups in other states were starting up. With this, many feared that a civil war in the United States would begin and thus, a unity ticket was needed. president Tsongas was retiring after 8 years of liberal legislation despite many calls from fellow Republicans to run for a third term. With this, another option was chosen. John McCain III, an admiral who had served in the Second African War and worked his way up. McCain had retired in 1989 after being injured in combat and was quite a popular figure for his service. McCain chose Jimmy Carter, a former senator and governor of Georgia who was known for his anti-segregation stances. The candidacy was officially nonpartisan and was endorsed by the Republicans, Democrats, and Union-Whigs. Despite this there was still opposition to the campaign. The Socialist Party, lead by Ron Dellums, the first "Negro" governor in the nation had refused to endorse McCain, fearing it would hurt their political independence. Dellums and his running mate, Bernie Sanders had the worst Socialist performance since the 1920s, only gaining 7% of the vote and winning no states. Another challenge to McCain's campaign was the southern states. The Mississippi and Alabama Democrats nominated different candidates than McCain, and the South Carolina Freedom Party nominated longtime senator Strom Thurmond, who was 94 and looked like he had been a senator since 1860. He won South Carolina despite not actually receiving votes for president due to South Carolina electing electors through the state legislature. These "challenges" ultimately didn't matter, as the McCain ticket won most of the states and won ovr 90% of the vote, the biggest landslide in history. The McCain administration ended when McCain retired in 2000, but his steady hand throughout the tumultuous 4 year period that defined his presidency is revered by many today.
