The 2020 Presidential election was even more unusual than the 2016 Presidential election.
In 2019, facing overwhelmingly low approval ratings, incumbent President Donald Trump declined running for a second term but declined to resign. The main candidates for the Republican nomination suddenly became Vice-President Pence, former Governor John Kasich, actor Dwayne Johnson, former Ambassador Nikki Haley, and Ambassador Kanye West. Due to past disagreements with Pence, President Trump endorsed West. Rapper Kanye West surprised many by his announcement in 2015 to run for President in 2020, only to suggest in December 2016 and much of 2017 that he would push back that run until 2024. These comments came after West noted “I would have voted for Trump” if he had even voted in 2016. Upon meeting with Trump in late 2016 and several times in 2017, West finally came out in support of the President. When Trump offered West the position of US Ambassador to South Africa upon the position becoming vacant in late 2017, West accepted the offer, leading to Trevor Noah joking “Aw, come on! Seriously, Trump? Of all the countries in all the world, you have to send him to mine?!” Upon winning the Republican nomination over a crowded field, the former diplomat (he resigned in mid-2019) decided to finally watch the American TV series House of Cards. This inspired him to pick his wife, Kim Kardashian, to be his running mate (West moved his place of residence to New York to convenience his wife, a resident of California).
Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, a record-shattering 21 candidates ran for the nomination, but alas, there could be only one. And that one was the 39-year-old billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook and by then the fifth-richest man in the world. To win back the Midwest, he chose liberal US Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin to be his running mate.
However, Zuckerberg and West were not the only major party candidates in the election cycle. In 2019, MIT students unveiled their latest invention – H.M.B. 2.0, the most advanced A.I. humanoid robot of its kind. Upon sitting down and absorbing current politics, HMB2 understood that a highly intelligent and completely incorruptible leader was necessary to ensure America’s continuation, and thus reached the most logical conclusion – run for President. He was eligible due to all of his parts being produced in the United States, and the project first being approved late 1985 made him 35 years old, as it technically counted as his birth certificate. He quickly formed the APEX (Altruistic Politics EXperiment) Party and, after deciding against a human running mate, despite the urges of his early supporters, convinced an elderly Artificially Intelligent
toaster from the state of Iowa to be his running mate [okay, that last bit's just some ASB fun on my part, sorry]. Initially disregarded as a non-serious candidate, HMB2 wowed away many with his campaign speeches, which were linguistically simple enough for the average voter to understand him, but intelligently sharp enough to persuade others of both his intelligence and sincerity: “my prime directive is to ensure the perpetual prosperity of the United States and its allies. My policies are the most logical ones to pursue.” He was strongly endorsed and supported by Zoltan Istvan and Stephen Hawking. Furthermore, to increase ratings, HMB2 was allowed in the debates with Zuckerberg and West, resulting in many turning to supporting him, while others began their Robot Doomsday preparations in earnest.
Republicans hoped West could win over the African-American vote in the southern and Midwestern states. However, Zuckerberg successfully connected West to the unpopular Trump administration, leading to West losing in a near-landslide. Most of West's supporters blamed Trump for the loss; West himself contested the election results in seven states, which only produced more votes for HMB2. The Libertarian ticket of Petersen/Kokesh received only 1.62% and the Green Party ticket got only 0.87%. The Constitution Party ticket, though, was able to win an astounding 3.72%, comprised mostly of hard-core conservatives who couldn’t support West and conspiracy theorists/“traditionalists” fearful of HMB2. HMB2 conceded the election graciously, saying that the experience was very educational and insightful, and could potentially lay the groundwork for future A.P.E.X. candidates.
On January 20, 2021, Mark Zuckerberg, at the age of 39, became America’s youngest President ever.
