They control a constellation of mining stations, including the great entrepot orbiting Ceres, Abundance Station. Nearly 40,000 people now live and work in the Belt, all unionized and with generous benefits. As transport in and out of the Belt is controlled by the IPMC and GECC (only the Nine are allowed direct access to space beyond LEO; Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Iran saw their space stations and lunar bases seized following World War III), Belters are paid in company scrip while they're in the Belt- only when they return home (if they ever do) do their receive their back pay in local currency units.
