Canterbury general election (Alt-History).png

Background
The Country government led by Brian Talboys had governed since 1979, the era of stagflation and rising unemployment though it had affected Canterbury less still had a profound effect on society. However, he and his government was unwilling to abolish farming subsidies which resulted in the over-production of agriculture products, this and the series of freezes of wages and prices made his government deeply unpopular, while the leader of the opposition Bill Rowling was growing in stature and popularity, and a convincingly centrist manifesto. Regardless, the Country party remained the most favored throughout 1983 and 1984 with a recovering economy and the success of public works programs and single-digit inflation. Many in political circles expected an early election expecting Talboys to take advantage of the favorable economic conditions, he however declined this. Preferring to wait until 1985 on the premise that the economy would improve further. Therefore, increasing his election prospects. However by March 1985 the economy though initially stable was lurching once more to a fiscal blow out, as the deficit soured, and the agricultural sector which was already under stress began to decline sharply. Bill Rowling seized this opportunity to demand a general election be called, Talboys unable to convince his own party of holding out for one more year responded in kind.

Well, the point of this was that the South Island is not formed into a greater New Zealand, the name "Canterbury" was a more suitable and catchy name than "New Munster".

I'm confused as to why Cactus Jack would knowingly split the Democrats vote share.

I don't get this persona that he has gained here as some sort of a radical ultra-conservative. If he becamr POTUS it would have been some form of an albeit watered down New Zealand, but an Old Right anti-New Dealer is not true IMHO.

Trying Times; a retrospective [5/5]

#49: Rafael Anchia [2033-2041]
HofbvGJ.png

Some called him “the Hispanic Obama”. The Republicans called him a worry. The Democrats called him the secret weapon. Even when Rafel Anchia was in the Texas House, he earned a fair amount of speculative attention, stemming from his memorable personality and dedicated involvement to his district. When he ran for Texas Governor, he easily ousted the now-unpopular Greg Abbot with a groundswell of support not seen since George W. Bush. Anchia took a slow and steady approach, spending several good years working for his state. During his term as Governor, the Lone Star State saw a massive expansion in its wind farms (thanks in part to the Newer Deal) and a subsequent boom in employment. When he finally made the tentative approach to the highest of offices, it was a sure thing, blasting past primary opponents Tina Kotek, Setti Warren and Chris Murphy, and beating the incumbent Republican president by double digits. For the first time in a long time, Texas went blue.

Pundits have noted that, after the first three months, Anchia’s presidency became a very relaxed one. International conflicts ere on the wind down – the new Russia presidency had started procedures to move towards a more westphalian model, the Korean insurgency had now given way to reunification, and the European “Febreze Coalition” were well on their way to wiping out the handful of remaining religious insurgents in the Middle East. The world economies had floated enough for healthy trading, unrelated climate stabilisation projects had quashed global emissions standards, and Americans, after coming very close to a nuclear escalation, had a newfound national desire for unity. Thusly, policies introduced during the ‘Era of Good Vibes’ were almost entirely domestic. The subjects in the limelight for the first Anchia term involved welfare, civil rights, gun right reform, antighetto and counter-urbanization programs, and, most predominantly, education reform.

As these were heavily contested in the past, there was certainly no end of controversy. Remaining congressional Republicans increased their efforts to repel each and every policy, which was widely perceived by the left as ‘the sore-loser route’. While this strategy fell through after the 2034 midterms led to Democrat majority, it caused widespread protests from religious activists, pro-life groups and the odd basket of deplorables. To counter this, Anchia took a ‘slow and steady’ approach to his policies, allowing outreach programs to do their work. One big misstep, however, nearly cost him reelection. ‘Project Goodall’ would have piggybacked on the Patriot Acts and given the federal government authorization to censor what it deemed ‘fear-mongering misinformation or gross falsehoods’. The right saw this as a toleration overstep (ironic, considering their electoral history), and the left saw it as a policy that could be manipulated by future administrations.

This ended up as nothing more than a trivial boo-boo. Anchia didn’t so much as run, but leisurely walked, too a second term. Many of the hardliner Republicans were replaced by Mainstreet candidates, and with them a slew of new policies were introduced; definitive preventative guidelines were established for future gun purchases, non-gentrificative property projects were implemented on cities with struggling minority communities, more money was pumped into farm subsidies and public schools, and, most aggregable, marijuana was legalized in all but one state. Progressivism had once again made its mark. During his farewell speech, President Anchia commented on how the nation had experienced hardships – the blundering of Donald Trump, the fumbling of Mike Pence, the rebuild under Sherrod Brown, and the near-miss with Adam Kinzinger. America had gone through it’s share of hardships, more than the pundits anticipated, but the country came out the other side in better shape. As he put it, ‘we had to crack a few eggs to make an omelet’.

From small things, big things grow.

On the day seven representatives of seven worlds shook hands, and agreed their people, with their shared past, had a shared future, no one could have known the enormity of that agreement; the effect it would have on the future, on the path of human history. It has been the speculation of numerous works, both academic and entertaining, on how the last 800 years of human history may have turned out if their had been dissent on that day, a voice or voices who stood separate. Would the universe be a better place? Or worse?

To detail the history of the Home Stars before the fateful day the Newhome starship Don't Know Where Where Going popped into existence above the planet Sol is well beyond the limited scope of this piece; instead we look at what happened afterwards: the formation of the Australasian Interstellar Community.

etAxKln.jpg

After first contact with Sol, Newhome wasted no time attempting (and succeeding) to contact the other colonies of the first fleet: for the colonists of the Crux sector, it was a heartening development. For hundreds of years, they had looked to the stars and wondered if they were the only ones, the last humans. To find so many of their distant brothers and sisters had not only made it, but thrived, filled the stars with celebration. Soon the small but growing fleet of FTL ships began to bring representatives to Newhome, so that they could learn about each other, the differences they had developed over the centuries, the similarities they still shared, the common roots they had. It was here the Community was born: a forum to share ideas and technology, to work together for the future.

The Community started simple, as an exchange of culture an ideas, but evolved as time went on, taking on new roles and responsibilities as technology advanced. As the planets of the Crux sector began to explore and colonise nearby stars, the Community helped coordinate; as FTL trade became essential to the planetary economies, the Community became a trade block. As improvements in communications technology made it easier for the planets to communicate, the Communities responsibilities grew, developing communications protocols, ruling on standards, and coordinating the development of the first quantum networks.

But it was first contact with the American Sector that sparked the biggest change in the Community.

The discover of of the other colonies sent shockwaves through the Crux sector: the apparent number of colonies and huge population (at the time estimated to be somewhere between twenty billion and two hundred billion) dwarfed the Crux colonies. It went beyond that though: now contact had been made, their was a “foreign” to the Crux colonies, rapidly becoming multiple “foreign” as the somewhat fractured nature of the American sector became apparent. The Home stars realised their was need to show united front, least the Crux sector be dominated: As such, Extrastellar affairs and dealings were united under the Community.

At the same time, the people of Home Stars began to engaged in a massive colonial expansion, spurred on in part by fear of the size of the American Sector. In a matter of decades, dozens of new star systems and planets were colonised. More and more it fell to Community authorities to organise and administer these new systems.

With more an more responsibility and authority resting in the hands of the Community, and integration between the Home Stars increasing, there were changes in how the Community was governed: from the original, professionally appointed committee of academics and diplomats, to the semi elected advisory council, and finally, the Interstellar Parliament, elected by the member planets of the Community. It was apparent, that full integration and federalisation was almost inevitable, and negotiations to achieve such began as early as 10210.

In the Final years of the Community, their was one more major development: the founding of the combined military force, ANZAC. ANZAC was formed in response to the growing issue of the border with the America Sector: the seemingly eternal conflicts burning across the sector had an unfortunate habit of spilling over into Crux space, and the ANZAC were intended to help stem the violence. What started as a security operation soon turned into a full blown conflict when ANZAC vessels investigating an incursion came under fire from from forces of one of the more aggressive American polities, the Great Cascade. Although the Cascade were beaten back, ANZAC high command identified the need to eliminate Cascade forces from the border stars; Unforeseeable at the time, this first military foray into the American sector was the beginning of a conflict that would define the next two centuries: the Subjugation of the American Sector.

On the 29th of Second-May, 10267 EE, as the sun rose over the planet Newhome, the flag of the Australasian Intergalactic Community was lowered for the last time, signifying the end of the 149 year old organisation. In its place, a new flag was risen, signifying the seven worlds of the Home Stars becoming a single nation. The Australasian Intergalactic Commonwealth was born.

Both states were under Republican governments that stayed loyal to Trump. Riots broke out in Miami and Detroit, but the state national guards remained loyal and put down the riots.

Bah!

At least Key West should have seceded like they did the last time the Feds got heavy handed.

The parties seem largely the same, but with those numbers there appears to be a fairly large third party in the mix.
Approximately four small ones, existing in government entirely on the sufferance of the Big Two, mainly to fulfill the entry requirements into the Independence Bowl football league. Panem et circenses, you know how it is.

William VII Celadon is the current White King, King of the Verdigris, protector of the Starsword, and First Lord of the Northern Islands. He took his schooling at the Royal Air Force Academy, and served for many years, including briefly in the Styan Prairie Bush War before the passage of the Impropriety Act put Queen Susan's futures in doubt and forced him to return.

Both William and his wife, Caroline Bonefalls, are known for their involvement with environmental causes, and under his kingship, more than three million acres of public land has been moved to some kind of protected status. While some suspect his sympathies, at least in domestic policy, to be somewhat Atlanticist, the Whiggish-aligned government leaders have spoken positively about his willingness to work with them in the interest of good governance.

There was a significant delay between Susan's abdication and William's coronation because Susan kept trying to abscond with the crown, and no one really wanted to order a police raid on Susan's chambers in the Summer Retreat.
