AJND: The Lost Generation (An Elseworlds Tale)

Owen Brewster Golson
is the 15th President of the United States of the American Nation and is the 11th member of the powerful Golson family to hold this position. He was recently reelected for an 8th term in 2452, matching the number of terms held by his predecessor and great-uncle, Enoch Golson. The current President Golson was born the youngest of 11 children to Hannibal Golson III, and wasn't expected to amount to much. In fact, he was scheduled to be sent to the seminary to become a Columbianist priest, but following a train accident that killed most of the members of his family, he attended the U.S. Military Academy in North Bend. He was an average student academically, but became known for his rather vocal political beliefs. After graduation, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army's Tank Service.

Due to his family connections, Owen Brewster Golson rose quickly through the ranks, becoming a regiment commander before his 25th birthday and a corps commander before his 30th. He was an adequate and competent military commander, but he wasn't particularly popular with the soldiers under his command. He was not great tactical genius, instead relying on superior technology and training to defeat over matched enemies. He was reckless and took great risks that often lead to large losses of life on both sides. Despite this, he was victorious more often than not, and became a favorite in the Army's General Staff. He was given command of the Army of the Massc during the Massac Expedition to recapture the eponymous hollow world. Despite being frequently outnumbered, Golson was known to remark "it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog" and charge headfirst into battle. The Army of the Massac never numbered more than 120,000 soldiers at its height, but it sustained more than 50,000 casualties while under Golson's command.

During this time, Golson was simultaneously well liked by the General Staff but was also seen as something of a liability due to the mounting casualties. The General Staff arranged for the Itawaba Soldiers Circles to elect Golson to the U.S. Senate to replace the retiring Senator Hubbard Johnson. While he was publically viewed as a bit of a bumbling idiot, Golson proved to be a shrewd politician. He was charismatic and popular with voters and non-voter citizens, and supported expansion of public works and rural electrification in newly reconquered territories. He took a hardline nativist and xenophobic stance on immigration, supporting measures to limit and curtail immigration from non-American nations in the Plutonian system. He also encouraged the military to be harsher on opposition and rebellions in occupied territory, including mass deportations, forced labor and hostage taking, all of which he had used extensively during the Massac Expedition. He was able to outmanuver other members of the Golson family to rise to the top and become a close confidant to the aging Enoch Golson.

Owen Brewster Golson was appointed Secretary of State in 2417. During his 7 years in the State Department, he began to draw American satellites closer into the orbit, colluding with the Federation of Freedom's International Bureau and the Catholic League to crack down on anti-American sentiment. He was also a staunch opponent of the Alliance of Industrial Workers, frequently targeting them abroad for sanctions and direct action. When Enoch Golson announced he was stepping down as President after the conclusion of his 8th term in 2425, Owen Brewster Golson was an early frontrunner, but he still faced significant opposition from other factions within the Federation for Freedom. He won the party's nomination and was easily elected President and has been elected to seven more terms. His administration has largely continued the policies that he became known for as a Senator. The military's reconquest of the Plutonian system has sped up rapidly, as has the harshness of American occupations (for every American soldier killed, 5 civilian hostages are shot, which has lead to significant depopulations). The American power grid is being rebuilt to rely on hydrolectricity and wind power as the final atomic reactors have run out of fuel. American satellites have been drawn in closer and have effectively no sovereignty or autonomy anymore. Almost all foreign immigration has stopped, saved for forced labor imported from the reconquered Marches. As he entered his 8th term in office as an octogenarian, Owen Brewster Golson has shown no signs of slowing down or stopping.

Well, that's frightening.

I wanna' see more of this world. What makes it Elseworldsish, besides being in the far future?

Damn we're getting a lot of good stuff recently (a streak I will definitively break eventually)

So, I'm watching Borgen and I realize that Denmark's population (about 5.6 million) is the same as Minnesota's (5.4 million) and that gets me thinking...

Bridget Nyborg has...

My only issue with this is that incumbent offices, even ones of a "lower" stature (like Secretary of State compared to Governor) are always at the top. I'm 97% sure on this.

AJND: The Lost Generation is entirely non-canon because it's a setting that can't happen with what I have planned for the future of AJND, but it was an interesting thought experiment to see where things could go, but won't. I have a few ideas for it, but there won't be too much for it.

NOT IF SOMEONE ELSE STARTS SHITPOSTING FIRST!

I know, but a combination of creative license, disagreement with that policy (consider that if Walter Mondale had won in 2002 he would still be more notable as "that former vice president who happens to also be the senator from Minnesota") and laziness led me to forgo the OTL policy.

So this, will probably be the last of the Ukraine series for now. I may come back, but I want to go work on some other areas beforehand.

The 2064 Ukrainian Parliamentary Elections were an important step forward for the country. The Second Black Tide had already sunk Ukraine's leading Neo-Putinist parties, dividing the country into roughly two factions. On one side, you had the progressives, such as the Network Movement, the All-Slav Free Union and other minor parties. On the other, you had the ultranationalists, Including Our Land/Self-Defense and Svoboda. In the last election, the Network Movement and Svoboda emerged as the leading parties. The Network Party promised peace, liberties, and reform. Svoboda promised confrontation with Russia. The Movement ended the election with a fairly narrow edge over Svoboda in the Rada, but the coalition with the All-Slav Free Union and securing the presidency meant that Ukraine would be safe from Svoboda's attempts to establish a United Poland-esque regime. With Neo-Putinism dead in the Ukraine, space has opened up for other smaller parties to rise and share their ideas. However, tensions are still high, both with Poland and Russia, meaning that the appeal of the ultranationalists is not diminished.

This year, six parties crossed the 5% threshold to earn proportional representation seats.

Network Movement: While the Network Movement's ratings were still in the green coming into the election, the party's appeal had fallen since the 2059 elections. In that year, many Ukrainians employed tactical voting to push them ahead of Svoboda in order to secure a moderate government. While the Movement's ratings skyrocketed after the Polish invasion was peacefully prevented, some Ukrainians are feeling buyer's remorse. Transhumanism is still very controversial, and the party's Zentrum ties are also unappealing to many. However, with Our Land/Self-Defence taking Svoboda's place as a threat to peace, few desire a divided Rada and the risk of a nationalist coup. Thus, the Network Movement, is still the largest party in the Rada, even if it lost a number of its seats.

Our Land/Self-Defense: An observer unfamiliar with Ukrainian politics may mistake Our Land/Self-Defense and Svoboda as cookie-cutter maximalist populists. In reality, Our Land/Self-Defense is an old-school ethnic nationalist party, closer to liberal ultranationalists like Russia's Liberal Democrats or China's One China party. While Svoboda's nationalism is rooted in anti-Russian sentiment, Our Land/Self-Defense is for ethnic Ukrainians only, and wants to marginalize the Poles along with the Russians. With the near-invasion by Poland serving as a humiliation to Svoboda, Our Land/Self-Defense has become the leading ultranationalist party in Ukraine, having the greatest positive swing of any party in the 2064 elections.

All-Slav Free Union: The partnership with the Network Movement has been good for the Union. For some Ukrainians, a vote for the Union is a vote for the government without voting for transhumanism, and thus the party has grown at the Network Movement's expense. With the balance of power shifting between the two partners, many in the party have begun to question whether the Union should remain part of the government, or if it should attempt to form a government on its own in 2069.

Maiden Party: Named after the squares in which their forums meet, the Maiden party is the Municipalist party of Ukraine. The fierce suppression of Muncipalism by the New Bolshevik government in Russia forced many of Municaplists to seek refugee in Ukraine, who have become the core of a rejuvenated Muncipalist movement in the country. The Maiden party has had some trouble finding its niche in Ukrainian politics, but have gained some popularity for taking a leading role in local government in Kharkov, Donetsk, and Kiev.

Green-Agrarian Bloc: The Green-Agrarian bloc is a unity list comprised of multiple mutualist, market socialist and unreformed socialist parties. Populist in nature, the Green-Agrarians have benefited immensely from Svoboda's fall, taking votes from Svoboda's "economic voters."

Svoboda: Svoboda has fallen far. One moment, they were at the cusp of gaining enough power to stage a coup, causing enough confusion for Polish soldiers to stream through the borders and prop up Svoboda's regime. The next, they were soundly defeated at the polls, and their ties with the United Polish regime, albeit not their plans, were revealed to the world. It's a surprise that they didn't fall farther, as only vigorous campaigning allowed them to stay above the threshold. Svoboda's politics can be described as a form national anarchism, with heavy emphasis on agrarianism and establishing a "warrior culture."

Very, very cool. I'm surprised no effort was made to retain control of the Isle of Man- it looks unscathed.
It was.... by the first strike. The UK was periodically bombed for the next two years; after the first strike took out most military, communication and government facilities, the later strikes were aimed purely at eliminating the populaton. The Isle of Man would not be spared.
Who controls the now abandoned British Isles?
The closest thing to Authority in the British islands is the Republic of Ireland, which just barely manged to hang on despite its proximity to the UK and copping a few stray nukes. A fair number of British refugees ended up there. The Emerald isles just ahve to put up with radiation wafting in from the north end and europe and the odd pandemic cause by Soviet bioweapons. Needles to say, most Irish fled first chance they could. Still, the scraps of a fully fi=unctional government beat no government at all.

IRA supporting Labour politician - interesting... and very detailed.

Ireland is still part of the British Commonwealth and with nothing equivalent to the Troubles ITTL, Sinn Fein are a fairly different political organisation- not the political wing of a terrorist organisation by the 1970s, at least.

Fuller details of this universe are Here if you wish to learn more.

So something similar to Fianna Fail then?

The Wade-Glies version, with such gems as "Lu-itz U-na-tz'u Lu-la ta Ssu-lva" and "Pa-jak O-pa-ma" just looks weird.

How widespread is transhumanism, @machinekng. Not just as any sort of ideology, but socially as well as technologically?

I think I PM'd you about answering that question this morning, but I realized to do so that I'd need a couple maps and another wikibox or two, so I'm working on it.

>Svoboda as second-largest party
>Poland invading Ukraine
>transhumanist government
>actually ideological political parties in Ukraine

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Anyway, yeah this is incredibly cool

Thanks.

Technically, the Polish Army never crossed the border. Rather, they were forced to stand down when the New Bolshevik Chairman threatened to intervene on Ukraine's behalf. While the New Bolshevik party has little control over the army, they do remain in control of the Russian nuclear arsenal, which would have likely been their only means of defending Ukraine.

Of course, it hasn't come to that, yet.

EDIT: Also, I fixed some of the seat counts for the parlimentary election and Free Union fluff, as they were either impossible or very odd with the electoral system.

Emperor Taishō (大正天皇 Taishō-tennō, 31 August 1879 – 25 December 1953) was the 123rd Emperor of Japan, according to the traditional order of succession, reigning from 30 July 1912 until his death in 1953.

Emperor Taishou oversaw the Empire of Japan's growth after the death of his father, the Emperor Meiji. He presided over two World Wars, and the emergence of the Japanese Democracy, which was immediately beset by military intrigue and attempts to usurp power from the elected government of Japan. His reign not only saw Japan's intervention in World War I on the side of the Entente, but the Great Kantou Earthquake of 1923, The Great Depression of 1929, The Mukden Incident of 1931, and World War II (1939-1945) where Japan fought valiantly on the side of the Allied Powers against the Axis (Germany, Italy, China).

After his two eldest sons, Prince Michi and Prince Chichibu, turned against him in 1936, they were killed during the February 26th Incident in that same year. After this, the Emperor promuglated a proclamation, declaring that the next "heir" to Japan would be his grandson through Michi -- the very young Akihito.

After World War II, Japan emerged as a superpower; forming her own East Asian bloc, bringing many nations into the fold over the years -- she was in direct competition with the Soviet Union's Warsaw Pact, and the United States' growing hegemony. While the Soviet Union collapsed in the late 1970s, Japan has held on and is now peaceful rivals with the United States -- both countries, having been allies in the Second World War, have grown closer than ever.

Brexit: The Timeline

[Will add backstory later...]

I actually had an idea for a one-shot TL where Peter Hitchens gets elected to Parliament and goes on to found his ideal party, something along the lines of a British "Law and Justice" party.

I do have to ask what "Social Patriotism" is.
