Thought I would do something different and create a music infobox. Credit goes to ArKhan for coming up with the idea for the genre, I just turned it into an infobox best I could.

Syko-Elektro:
Has it's foundations in the late 1970s and early 1980s, growing out of Disco, Progressive Rock, and Electronic Music. The Name is an intentional miss spelling of "Psycho" referring to it's Psychedelic qualities, and "Electro" referring to the fact that it's almost entirely Electronic. A Sub-Genre called "Syko-Mudd" was popular in the Early 1990s. It's name refers to the heavily distorted "Muddy" guitar riffs that are one of it's defining characteristics. Syko-Mudd grew out of Seattle, and was noted for it's lyrical themes of social alienation. Syko-Mudd is generally considered to have died out when Kurt Cobain, the popular lead singer of the pioneering Syko-Mudd group Chakra commited suicide in 1995.

Charles Frederick, the second son of Gustav IV Adolf and Theodora of Russia, became Crown Prince of Sweden and Norway following the death of his older brother Grand Prince Gustav in 1831. Charles Frederick had never expected to sit on the throne, and as such had postponed marriage throughout his adult life. He had furthermore neglected his duties as Viceroy of Norway, instead letting the Speaker of the Norwegian assembly deal with those affairs. Indeed, after his inauguration as Viceroy of Norway in Trondheim in 1823, he never visited Norway ever again, and only corresponded occasionally with the Norwegian government at all. Indeed, all Charles Frederick seems to have cared about was living as a libertine down on the continent, where he wasted a minor fortune on liquor and opium and fathered illegitimate children, living under the assumed name of Fortinbras, Count of Gripsholm. George Washington Von Fersen, who met the Swedish prince a number of times throughout the 1810s and 1820s, describes the man in his memoirs (1888) as having "the sexual appetite of a young male rabbit, the pride of an African lion in its prime, the subtlety of a blind elephant, and the political ability of a young male rabbit".

Despite numerous pleas from his parents to return to Sweden following the death of his elder brother, Charles Frederick refused. In 1834 he made the terrible mistake of attempting to bed a young German aristocrat named Amalia von Westphalen. She rejected his overtures, and when he persisted asked her fiancé, Emanuel Wasserstein to tell the annoying Scandinavian nobleman off. When Wasserstein sternly informed Charles Frederick that Westphalen wanted him to leaver her alone, the Viceroy of Norway made the big mistake of challenging Wasserstein to a duel. This was a bit inadvisable, seeing that Wasserstein was in fact a duel champion, who accepted his offer. Charles Frederick then made the great mistake of forgetting what day the duel was to take place, and on the morning of 14 September 1834, he woke up with a terrible hangover from a night of heavy drinking. On a field outside of Prague, Charles Frederick predictably met his end.

Since Charles Frederick was travelling under an assumed name, and not even his companions were aware of his real identity, it took a full month before the government in Stockholm was made aware of that the heir to the throne had died in a duel. This was the final straw for the fragile mind and heart of the King, who had a nervous breakdown and was bedridden for months in deep melancholy. Gustav IV Adolf never fully recovered, and retired almost entirely from the political duties of his office of king, retreating to Drottningholm Castle where he would spend the rest of his days playing chess and cards with his guards and discuss Lutheran theology with the archbishop who was a frequent guest. He attempted to abdicate a number of times, but he was always persuaded against it in the end, as the government felt that it would bring unnecessarily worry the nation, and because the heir to the throne was still very young.

Charles Frederick's death meant that the title of Crown Prince was transferred once more, this time to Gustav IV Adolf's third and youngest son, the Duke of Scania, Prince Arthur...

The Laurentian presidential election of 2016 was a hotly contested one. With incumbent President Kucinich proving to be an unpopular, the Liberal Party began to search for a more moderate force amongst its ranks to try and win back the country's highest office. Former Ohio governor Ted Strickland emerged as the front runner for the Liberal primaries, moving away from the leftist path the outgoing President had set for the party. Upset by this move, Kucinich urged his supporters to abandon the Liberal Party, and instead advocated for the nascent Progressive Party to mount a challenge to the Liberals. While the Progressives had little support outside of Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin, they were still a viable national party, sending several Senators and Representatives to Chicago.

Senator Amy Klobuchar was nominated by the Progressives, with the President openly endorsing her run. This split in the Liberals allowed for the Republicans, the oldest party in Laurentia, to nominate the controversial governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker. Walker, who had slashed pensions and broken the backs of unions in the state, was seen as nearly unelectable in normal circumstances, but Republican primary voters endorsed him by a massive amount, sweeping all but two states in term of voters, only Iowa and Nebraska Republicans voted against him, instead opting for Michigan governor Rick Snyder.

As the candidates entered the General Election, the Liberals knew the threat that the President had placed them under, and ran attack ad after attack ad against Walker and Klobuchar, painting them as destructive for the country. Walker was seen as the man who would destroy the country, and Klobuchar was portrayed as his assistant, helping him into office. Strickland's campaign fell into serious trouble over a controversial comment while campaigning in Ohio. Believing he was not being recorded, he expressed his wishes that the "idiot pro-Confederates in Kentucky and Southern Ohio would f--- off and die." The news exploded across Kentucky and Ohio, where Strickland was seen as despising several of the people he was campaigning to lead. Politicians from both states attacked Strickland, as he was calling into question their loyalty to Laurentia.

Despite Walker's record, and what can be described as a mediocre campaign, he was elected Laurentia's president, but only barely. While Walker won eight states and with it a majority in the electoral college, the popular vote was extremely close. Two recounts had to take place in Ohio, due to the closeness of the election, with Walker only beating Strickland by a meager 836 votes. The election also saw Klobuchar lose Minnesota by only 6,591 votes, after a recount, but there was evidence that the Republicans were urging their supporters to vote for Klobuchar, in hopes to ensure that the Liberals wouldn't get the state's Electoral votes. Elsewhere the election was extremely close, with Klobuchar playing the spoiler.

The Progressives saw their vote share nearly double, thought to be thanks to President Kucinich's endorsement. The party logged double digit percentages in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. In 2012, only Minnesota lent double digit percentages to the Progressives, their traditional stronghold, and a favourite protest vote for many Laurentians. Few expected the party's success to last, but its performance allowed it to be automatically on the ballot in several states for the next election cycle. Liberal commentators blasted the President's actions, and many vowed to ensure that the Progressive threat would be warded off, as many hunkered down for four years of President Walker.

Another installment in the weird and somewhat depressing world of Interesting Times!

This time, we're leaving the rump USA behind and going west, young people. West to the Republic of California! :D

California has been independent since 2072. It has not done that badly as an independent nation, although it is known to rely on Cascadia for water (Cascadia gets investment into its green industry in exchange). True to form for a traditional "blue" state, the California Democrats used to dominate it.

As labor strife gets worse and the rising techno-corporates alienate the masses, the Democrats found that they were losing their working-class base and increasingly relying on middle-class technocrats. Where was the working class going? Not to the incompetent California Republicans, for one!

They went to the heir of the "People's Movement" (a Occupist protest movement with a socialist twist), the Laborers' Movement.

Maria Durantez was elected President of California in 2082, defeating incumbent President Hilda Thomas and bringing a sea-change to California.

In Durantez's first term, the techno-corporates and the labor co-operatives (now covering many white-collar jobs as well) managed to work out an understanding, creating California's social market economy. This mode of economy has been a bit shaky, but it's strongly popular.

The rising threat of the USA, especially with the popular firebrand Jorge F. Velasquez openly threatening war if he was to get elected, and the incumbent President trying to use jingoistic rhetoric in order to leech American Party votes, has made Californians jittery.

This election was in a sense a referendum on President Durantez's policies, but foreign policy played a key part in it.

President Maria Durantez promised to continue her foreign policy of building up California's troops and cementing alliances with the Pacific. This is known as the "Grand Pacific Co-operative Alliance", but many doubt it will work. Especially with China's current isolationist Premier.

The Laborers' Party affiliate the Nevadan Workers' Unity party has endorsed Durantez.

Senator Joseph Ruan is campaigning for an "North American Defense Organization" (NADO) that will focus on alliances with Canada, New England, New York and possibly the European Federation. He also promises to continue the social market economy, although make it "friendlier to business".

The traditional Democratic affiliate in Nevada the Silver Democrats has begrudgingly endorsed Ruan, but warned against "the lure of the right".

Calaveras Governor Abigail Smith is serving the same old Republican gruel, although with less "pan-American" policies than before. She promises a "defensive treaty" with Cascadia, Canada and Hawaii, but in general supports cordial relations with the USA, an unpopular position. Regarding the social market economy, she sees it as "bad for business" and supports its repeal, or at the least, an "opt-out" for businesses.

The Nevadan libertarian-ish Party for Prosperity has of course endorsed Smith.

General Justin Gonzalez is running on a Californian nationalist platform. Build up California's military, ally with Mexico (something the others haven't thought of) and make it hell for any invading American troops. Regarding the social market economy, he says "If it works for us, keep it."

The Sagebrush Party, a Nevada secessionist party, has chosen not to run in the presidential election. They instead advocate "non-political" ways of showing disaffection with California, like occupist rallies, protests, picketing "illegal Californian occupation stations" (i.e. government buildings). Protests in Nevada's cities are somewhat common this election. In three years, it'll escalate to a full-blown rebellion that the party swears they had nothing to do with.

The election was a walkover for President Durantez as she easily won a majority of the vote and a huge lead over her opponents. The next election is in 2094 due to the somewhat major inconvenience of military occupation by American forces preventing the holding of the election of 2090.

The remaining 7% that did not go to the main four candidates went to, in order of how much...

1) Write-ins for Nevada parties like the Sagebrush Party. The party in question, even though it isn't officially running this election, encourages write-ins.
2) Votes for minor California parties like the fringe Libertarians.
3) Write-ins for a different Dem/GOP candidate. That's legal, BTW, even though those candidates aren't running a write-in campaign.

The 2135 Nigerian presidential election was held amidst an air of assassinations and alleged voter fraud. The Nigerien Progressive Congress (NPC) had long been the dominant political party of Nigeria, having won 7 consecutive presidential elections and holding large majorities in both houses of the National Assembly. The NPC built up a large support base through the use of block-level and neighborhood-level political machines in the Nigerian Metroplex, a sprawling, L-shaped megalopolis that spans the Nigerian coast and north along the Niger River, moving from the city of Lagos in the west, following the coast until Port Harcourt in the east, then heading north to the capital of Abuja before finally coming to an end at Kano in the north. This region is home to the five-sixths of terrestrial Nigeria's population of more than 600 million. The NPC has built a large base in the Metroplex through a variety of social welfare initiatives, law & order politics and social progressivism. The primary opposition is the Union Party, a smaller, centre-right party found primarily in the more rural north, with a great deal of support coming from Islamic democrats, conservative Christian and good governance liberals. Nigeria's economy--like most of the world's--began to slow down in the late 2120s, and the NPC's attempts to kick start the economy again failed, allowing the Unionists to make surprising gains in the 2131 and 2133 midterms, and it left the door open for a Unionist victory in the 2135 presidential election.

The NPC spent the rest of 2133 and all of 2134 regrouping and trying to find a candidate to counter the Unionist surges. Incumbent President Badajidge Olanrewaju was term-limited after a single term, so the NPC's Central Committee had to once again seek out a new candidate to officially be chosen at the party's December 2134 national convention. Normally, the Interior Ministry or the Budget Ministry were stepping-stones to the Presidency, and both Bella Tijani and Idris Sada had presidential aspirations, but due to the panic of 2130 and the government's unpopular attempts at reform, the Central Committee wanted an outsider. Party donors and big wigs quickly rallied around the charismatic Carl Josef Nwaboshi of Cross River. Nwaboshi had been a member of the Nigerian House of Representatives in the 2110s before serving as the Minister of Mines & Steel Development in the cabinet of President Stefanie Akunyili. He served in the Akunyili administration for only a few years before stepping down, and in his retirement, he became a popular political pundit, hosting one of the most popular political television programs in the country. While he had a short political resume, he was an outsider and was very popular with the people. With the backing of the Central Committee, Nwaboshi was easily nominated at the national convention, with former National Security Adviser Mustapha Umaru as his running mate--Umaru was to bring political experience and clout to the ticket.

The Union Party saw 2135 as their Big Opportunity to finally break through. While they hadn't won majorities in either 2131 or 2133, they had cut significantly into the NPC's seat total, and polling showed that 2135 would be competitive. As such, the Unionist candidate field was a crowded affair, with more than 15 major candidates lining up. Despite the overly crowded field, it was really a four-way race between representatives from the party's major factions. Former Governor Abdulsalami Ailero of Kebbi was a social libertarian who had opposed a great many of the Olanrewaju's administrations social progressive reforms, namely their attempts at prohibition of tobacco and sugary drinks. Governor Aisha Sabo of Jagawa had a reputation as a union-buster and good governance liberal, having cracked down on corruption in her state--she frequently campaigned with an axe as a prop, to show that she was willing to cut through red tape and corruption. Former Representative Christian Shaibu was a former Christian preacher and officer in the Nigerian Army, and he was a strong nationalist who encouraged further expansion and settlement of the outer system. Finally, there was Professor Samuel Ambrosetti Akpan, an atomic scientist and the son of European immigrants who had worked his way up from poverty to become the head of Nigeria's Atomic Energy Commission. Ailero, Sabo, Shaibu and Ambrosetti Akpan were the four major candidates and crowded out the rest of the field. The primaries in the fall of 2134 were close and contentious, but not overly negative. Ailero started out strong but began to falter, while Sabo gained the support of many party leaders. Sabo surged ahead and clinched the nomination, and she chose Ailero as her running mate after being impressed with his ability during the primary debates.

The general election campaign began in earnest after the new year, with Sabo and Ailero cross-crossing the state and sometimes giving as many as 6 speeches a day each. Nwaboshi had been forced to go on hiatus from his television program, but he remained a fixture on the television and radio, and he spoke just as frequently as Sabo and Ailero (Umaru spoke little and mostly took care of the behind the scene stuff). At the end of January, Sabo and running close to Nwaboshi, but tragedy struck the Unionist Party. While flying out of Dutse, Jigawa, for a campaign event, the chartered flight that Sabo was on suffered mechanical failure and crashed, killing all 97 passengers, including Aisha Sabo. The campaigns were put on hold for a week to allow for a funeral and mourning, and the Unionist Party named Abdulsalami Ailero their new candidate, and he chose former Senator Ahmadu Abubakar of Kwara as his new running mate.

Ailero surged ahead in the polls, and some had him within the margin of error with Nwaboshi, who some saw as callous and indifferent towards his opponent's death. But a series of poor debate performances and the revelation of extramarital affairs sidetracked the Ailero campaign heading into the homestretch (many would accuse Nwaboshi and the NPC of manufacturing the scandal). Come election day in April, Nwaboshi and the NPC won a large victory over Ailero and the Unionist, far larger than anyone had anticipated. The Union Party claimed voter fraud, but the Interior Ministry and the Federal Election Commission declined to investigate. There were computer glitches during counting of the votes, and each time the computers were brought back online, Nwaboshi had a larger vote share. Likewise, there were some rumors and whisperings that the mechanical failures that had killed Aisha Sabo had been intentional and she'd been murdered by the Nwaboshi campaign. Ailero didn't concede the election until the day before Nwaboshi's inauguration, and the potential scandal has lingered over the new administration.

The Russians are a part of the EU?

The European Union's alternate in this timeline is a lot more confusing and multifaceted than in OTL. There's a transfer union involved and a pseudo-fiscal-uniony thing that I haven't finished figuring out, but essentially Eurasia is sort of on the same level of integration as Denmark or Britain (jumped in early, is in for the free trade, but no United States of Europe, thank you very much!) are IOTL.

Is this the In Frederick's Fields universe?
